Makena P17 injections?

Has anyone had to do these with a previous pregnancy? This is my 4th baby and my 2nd one spontaneously came at 36.3 when my water broke. My new nurse mentioned that the OB will likely want me on these once a week for injections until 36 weeks. I was never on them (nor were they mentioned) with my 3rd pregnancy so it caught me off guard. Does anyone have any experience with them?

Re: Makena P17 injections?

  • They are frequently given at the OBGYN office I work at, but I wonder why your last OB didn’t mention them then?

I’m currently taking them and this is my second pregnancy doing so. I do believe they helped me in staying pregnant as long as I did with my second pregnancy.
Honestly, I would talk to your OB about. If you’ve only had one 36 week birth, then they might not be necessary. I don’t think it would hurt but they are painful and I wouldn’t do them if I didn’t have to.

I’ve been on these injections for my last 4 pregnancies, and will with this one too.

    *TW*:
My first pregnancy ended in a loss when my body went into labor at 22 weeks.

You take them from 16-36 weeks, one injection a week. My husband was trained with it in the OB office and gives them to me at home (it’s very easy).

Are they pleasant? No. Are they better than a pre term birth and NICU stay or loss? Yes.

They are totally worth it in my opinion. By the time this pregnancy is over I’ll have had 100 of these injections.

Obviously your body has proven it can carry a full term baby after your early delivery, but since every pregnancy/baby/birth is different I would personally err on the side of, “better safe than sorry”.

  • Thanks y’all! It threw me off when the nurse mentioned it. But I would never forgive myself if I didn’t do them and something happens that I could have prevented. I will be talking to my OB about it at my visit tomorrow!
