2nd Trimester

Anterior Placenta

Hey! I'm 19 w 4 d and I went in for my anatomy ultrasound this week. Baby boy looks great! The only thing that worried me was that I have an anterior placenta. Does that mean I won't feel him kick until the last month or 2? Will it make it more difficult for my belly to get bigger and he won't have a lot of room? It's my first so I don't know what to expect. I just know that his legs are really long already ( Dad is 6'4"- a foot taller than me) and I hope he won't be too squished. We've been looking forward to feeling him move around so I hope it won't delay that too much.

Baby will not be too squished, that's why our bellies expand as baby gets bigger and we feel feet, kicks, etc in our chest cavity and pelvic area when pregnant and eventually come out when  ready.   They evacuate their "home."

As for the anterior placenta, You may not feel kicks or punches as strongly because the placenta can act as a cushion.
  • 2 pregnancies with anterior placentas and with both I started to feel kicks and movements externally around 25-26 weeks (internally 22-24). I feel the movements in different spots depending on the baby's position.

Also the baby will have enough room, our bodies are amazing and will expand. I am short 5'1" with a short torso and my belly just stuck out further compared to others.

  • I had an anterior placenta with my daughter. I first felt her around 16 week, but I never felt strong kicks, saw body parts poke out of my belly, etc.  this time Im almost sure my placenta is posterior because I’m already feeling baby at just over 13 weeks.  So although you may not feel as much, you’ll feel enough to know everything is OK in there, and there are no risks to you or baby.
