My work bestie just told me this morning she finally got her BFP this weekend after trying since July. I'm so excited and want to put together a little bag of fun/useful stuff for her but also need to figure out a way to give it to her discreetly so nobody else questions it. And also I always worry about giving baby related things too early just in case things don't work out. Should I go for it or wait it out a few weeks?
@bananapanda oh that’s a tough one, if it were me I would probably be super excited to give it to her but then would hold off a few weeks just because if something were to happen I wouldn’t want her to have the gift as reminder.
My hands are so swelled I can barely close my fingers, I called and left a message with the nurse line because my joints are hurting at this point and I feel like this is a lot of swelling
@bananapanda I would hold off on giving any baby related items just yet. But I think giving her a pregnancy related book would be a good idea. “Expecting Better” by Emily Oster would be an awesome gift for a FTM. It has fact based information on TTGP and discusses miscarriage statistics etc as well, so I don’t think it would be triggering if things didn’t work out. It could be a good resource to help her feel more supported if things don’t work out. And if everything goes well, it’s an awesome resource of fact-based guide to pregnancy.
@bananapanda maybe give her things that are useful in the first trimester for now. Sour candies or preggie pops, saltines, ginger ale? and hold off on other things until second trimester?
MH and I have interviews this afternoon for a school district an hour south of us. I haven't interviewed in for anything in about a decade and I'm a touch nervous. They have two positions open for what we both do and we were told by a friend (my former principal) of the principal to apply because she wants us to apply. The position has been openly posted since December it only shows one position because the other one is being filled by a long term sub currently. We both are going into this interview with the thought that they hire both of us or we don't accept. I don't know how that will work out when I show up pregnant and they realize that I will have a newborn next year. I sort of don't want to job because I have it pretty easy at my school and know people who I can get to cover pumping breaks for me it will be so much harder to do that when I don't know the school or people. My husband just wants change and to be closer to civilizations and only sees the benefits and not all the negatives that I see.
@bananapanda I agree that something related to the first trimester would be good.
Hi everyone I've been MIA lately because I'm trying to unplug from the computer once I'm home. Hope everyone is doing well! I started packing my hospital bag this weekend, can't believe we're in the final weeks.
Random question: Do I have to have bought anything from my Amazon registry to get the discount (not talking about the diaper discount, just the regular one)?
DD #1: April 2017 DD #2: May 2020 Baby #3: EDD May 2023; MC October 2022
I let my daughter con me into throwing a princess dress up play date in 2 weeks, because she knows once her brother comes we won’t be doing stuff like that for awhile. My house will be full of 10-12 5 year old girls in princess dresses (yay glitter), 5-6 boys in knight outfits, all with parents, all singing Disney songs. The only plus is that I can get a Publix cake “for the kids”.
@catem07 Amazon says the completion discount is available 14 days after making your registry and 60 days before baby is due. It does not say you have to purchase anything in advance to be eligible for the discount. The discount only applies to certain items and it will show this when you are looking at your registry on a desktop.
@drkoyya glad I'm not the only one who started packing the hospital bag this weekend. It suddenly feels so close when the dr starts giving you hospital registration papers and talking birth plans.
Is anyone pre-registering at their hospital? I just did it for the twins and did it with both my other babies. I highly recommend for anyone who hasn't thought about it. Answering basic intake questions during contractions is a PITA.
Yes @ruby696 my OB gave me the paperwork at my last appointment and I aim to turn it in this week. I hope it helps. I should already be in their system, but I guess that doesn't matter.
@pirateduck If you're already in the system, registration will go super fast. They still had some follow-up questions with DD, which was annoying because they were trying to get me to answer questions like whether I felt safe at home while I was having contractions and they were trying to place IV's.
@jhysmath good luck at your interview! It's always risky switching schools, so hopefully whichever way it goes it works out for the best! I will say that I started at a new school when DS was 6 months old and I was pumping. It was in a similar situation as you in that at my previous school I was super comfortable and it was easy to make sure I was able to pump at the times needed - but at my new school everything worked out fine and everyone was very accommodating - I think the only people who even knew I was pumping were my assistant principal and my department chair.
I did the pre registration paperwork in January. I’ve been debating when I should pack our bags. DS2 was born at 36 weeks and I’ll be 31 weeks tomorrow. I’m feeling the time crunch now.
Im currently de tagging and washing baby stuff to satisfy my over the top nesting urges. It was never this bad with my boys.
@emlettuce I recently had the hospital bag talk with some other women. I think really just want a bag of food and drinks so hubby doesn’t have to leave my side until it’s time for us to all go home. I feel like the hospital will/should provide anything else I actually need, plus I will want to use things in life before then and won’t want them in a bag in the closet for weeks. Maybe I will just make a list of things to grab when the time comes. Hmm...
@pirateduck I literally need like 5 things: a pair of leggings and a shirt to go home in, a nursing bra, dry shampoo, deodorant, toothbrush and mascara. I buy travel size/disposable for toiletries and wear my maternity leggings to the hospital, so all that I need in the bag is a nursing bra and shirt which I have plenty to spare.
I do one sleeper and one blanket for baby. Honestly I didn’t use anything else either time I went. I sent MH out for food because I had a craving and couldn’t eat when I got to the hospital anyways.
@pirateduck yeah I definitely overpacked for DS 's labor but it's crazy how close to the end we're getting. Also, when packing snacks, don't pick anything too smelly. DH decided to pull out some beef jerky and I was starving and nauseous and ready to kill him.
Has anyone else already done or scheduled maternity pictures? I think last time I did them around 31-32 weeks so I really need to get to scheduling them (and finding clothes) but curious what time frame everyone else is doing them.
@pirateduck Now that my hospital bag is mostly packed, there's very little in it. We have a bag just for snacks because we're hungry people. The carry-on suitcase is filled with toiletries, medication, extra contacts, shower shoes (one pair for us to share since I have huge feet), robe, nursing PJs, going home dress, and some Fridamom products. I'm just missing a nursing bra, DH's clothes, and the diaper bag (with nursing pillow).
@pirateduck Allllll the dry shampoo. I know some people prefer to shower, but I didn’t until I got home. I labored in the bath/shower until I hit 5cm with DS1 and had just finished a bath with DS2, so I was sick of the water by the time I got to the hospital. And I was just too tired and too sore for the shower the first 48 hours. Face wipes and dry shampoo were all I needed. MH went home for showering and changing, so he didn’t really need anything other than a phone charger.
OH. As a TTM let me throw this out there: take an extension cord! Hospital rooms have plug ins in the strangest places and your phone will stay dead thanks to all the calls/texts/pictures for those first 48 hours, but you won’t be able to put it down for charging. And if you’re like me you probably won’t sleep much due to baby and in and out staff, so the phone will be your entertainment.
@rox7777 hmm I hadn't thought about sending DH home to shower. We live only 10 minutes from the hospital, so maybe he'd like that. And AMEN on the extension cord (or a long charger).
DD #1: April 2017 DD #2: May 2020 Baby #3: EDD May 2023; MC October 2022
Agree that not much is needed. I have 2 onesies, a muslin blanket and mittens for baby(my kids like to scratch their faces). For me, nursing tank and bra and nursing pads. I will throw in pants and shirt when the time comes along with toiletries and a charger.
We are also close to the hospital so husband comes home to shower, change and check in with our other children.
As a long laborer, I need some stuff during labor. Aromatherapy stuff to help with nausea, copies of different birth plan scenarios, a couple books with labor suggestions. So many snacks and drinks. A few changes of clothes-I don't do hospital gowns. At all. My own pillow. 3-4 baby outfits. A couple cloth diapers. My breast pump in case. Extension cord, yup. Basic toiletries. baby blanket. Kindle (for reading when I can't sleep, because vitals checks overnight keep me up for at least an hour). Maybe something else, but can't remember right now. Not a light packer, but I entirely loathe and fear the hospital. Likely, I won't be going, but at 32 weeks ish, I'll pack the go bag, in case, and a go bag for kids (who should be staying here at home no matter what, but you never know, and packing in labor is the worst day ever.)

@pourmeanothermocktail Agree that hospital gowns are the worst. With DD I work a short maxi skirt and a t-shirt, and OMG there was such a huge difference in my mental well being. Also, a lot of hospitals will let you order huge quantities of food and share with YH, so while bringing snacks is important, he'll probably do just fine. My hospital let DH order instead of me when I was in labor, so he was eating my meals. Also, a tablet or kindle is a great idea. I pack enough clothes for 3 full days in case of unexpected c-section. And extra baby clothes, just in case. Agree that an extension cord is a must. Also recommended a real camera if you have one.
Hospital bag talking is making me realize just how close we are now. I am also a hot mess this week worrying I’m suddenly going to go into preterm labor like with DS1 so mentally I’m feeling so down and anxious and I don’t know just blah.
I rocked the shit out of my hospital gown with DS! Lol. I will definitely bring nursing bras/pads, a change of clothes to wear home, ipad, phone/charger, chapstick (the hospital had vaseline..eewie), nursing pillow (didn't bring last time and regretted it), toothbrush/paste, mascara and a few blankets and outfits for baby.
Hospital supplied plenty of diapers/wipes and they had shampoo and soap for the shower so I'll skip those this time. Last time I brought food, card games, a portable fan, shampoo/conditioner/body wash, tons of clothes for me and baby...omg there is no need for so much extra stuff, also with an emergency c-section, I didn't get to eat anything other than jello and broth for 2 days and knowing there were snacks in my bag made me a little (ok a lot) grumpy
I would also add: -A robe, even if you wear the hospital gown, it’s nice to put it on if you want to walk outside of your room. I had to walk to the NICU several times a day for 2-3 days. -Slippers or easy slip on shoes.
The hospital provides a pump if needed, so not sure if you need to bring your own.

my husband bought me socks from one of those Jump trampoline parks that have the traction bumps on the bottom for walking around. I love them because I could not find any with the bumps that weren’t made out of this gross feeling fuzzy stuff. I also recommend bringing your noise machine if you bought one for the nursery because it blocks out all the hallway noises and hospital sounds so YOU can sleep better.
Soooo last night in the middle of the night my dog pooped and puked on the floor. I cleaned up around 4:00am. I swear the smell is still lingering 16 hours later. I don’t know what else to do. I re-cleaned the spot that was on the carpet. All the trash is outside in the can, I’ve opened the windows, I’ve had a wax warmer going. I’m sure it’s jut my super pregnancy nose, but I can’t handle it!
I've been up since 1:30 and will definitely need a nap today. The first thunderstorm freaked the dog out. She's normally okay but she was shaking and whimpering. It was pretty violent. I checked Twitter for a weather acct I follow and saw the tornado had just hit East Nashville. We're 30 minutes NE so we're safely tucked away, probably just downed trees and some flooding. But a few places I needed to go to later today are either roadblocked or completely gone. Police set up shelter at the Farmer's Market, and they lost power during the second t-storm.
Then an hour ago I heard my husband in the kitchen, so I went to see what in the world he could be doing at 4:45am. Apparently DS has been throwing up all night and DH has taken care of all of it, including multiple loads of laundry and showers. So I feel like an asshole. Thank goodness it's election day and there's no school.
@pirateduck - that happens to me every time I change one of DD’s dirty diapers. I swear the smell just gets stuck in my nose. So gross.
@thepretzelchick - those storms sound scary, I’m glad you were well away from the tornado path.
As for the other, you’re not an asshole. It’s awesome your H stepped in and let you get what sleep you could. I hope DS has stopped throwing up and you stop feeling guilty about what you didn’t know.
