Polyps and Hysteroscopy

Hi! I had an endo scratch yesterday in preparation for my third FET. They sent the tissue off to be analyzed and it appears that it showed I have polyps. I’m now looking to do a hysteroscopy (which I understand is a minor surgical outpatient procedure) to have them removed. They canceled my cycle until we can get this done, and they suspect it could be a reason my other FETs have failed. Anyone have experience with this?

Re: Polyps and Hysteroscopy

  • Check out Phil & Alex on YouTube. I’m pretty sure that’s what she had before her successful transfer - her video made the removal look fairly simple. Glad you’ve got an answer for a possible reason with this scratch

I had a hysteroscopy done more than three years ago after my RE found small polyps in my uterus after a saline sonohysterogram. At the time I was in the process of starting IVF. My RE felt that the polyps could interfere with implantation so we decided to just go ahead and remove them.
The whole process took about half a day. I checked into the surgery center in the morning, was placed under general anesthesia so I was out during the whole procedure. I woke up in bed with leg compression machines, remained in bed/rested while the anesthesia wore off. The doctor came and explained what happened and was discharged by midday.  Had minor cramps and light bleeding the first day I think. For the next a week and a half I experienced some spotting but otherwise the recovery was fine.
I ended up doing three rounds of ER before I transferred my first embryo almost a year after my hysteroscopy. It was a success and my son is now 22 months old. I recently had my second FET and now I’m 16 weeks pregnant.

I had a similar experience, except we did my two retrievals, and then I had the SHG prior to transfer.  That was when we found a polyp, so we spent an extra cycle doing the hysteroscopy - I believe it was scheduled similar to the SHG, during the FP, i.e. prior to ovulation - before moving on to FET.

I believe I had to be fasting due to the anaesthesia, and I met my doctor at the surgical center (that was actually just upstairs from one of her offices.) The anaesthesia people were very nice, and I remember having a similar experience where the wheeled me in - vaguely remember seeing the lights in the procedure room - and then next thing I was waking up in recovery.

Afterwards was all pretty straightforward, maybe some cramping and/or spotting, but it was so unremarkable, I barely remember. 🤷 You do need to have someone drive you home afterwards, and you will probably need ice cream and / or your other favorite treats ready for you when you get home, bc obv. :)

    My first transfer *TW*

But we had success with the next one.  I didn't need another procedure once we returned to center two years later, either.  Hope that helps!  And GL!!!
