The Name Thread

Re: The Name Thread

  • @robyn2201 I love Fiona and Violet! They match without being too matchy matchy and they sound like sisters in a picture book. I think using something like both having some letter combination or double letter is a great way to name twins.

  • For a boy, I think SO and I have settled on William Carlisle!
  • I am struggling with names right now! We found out girl from NIPT, we’ll confirm that on the 27th. My husband is set on Mabel (which I suggested) but the more I hear it being used as her name I don’t think it’s for her. We used names we loved for our boys that had meaning and I can explain to people the backstory of the name. I feel bad if we name this girl and all we have for it is, “I liked it.”
  • @itsmehere1212 I get why you’d feel bad since you have backstories for your sons names but I definitely wouldn’t think twice if you didn’t have a backstory or reason for your daughters name. There might be some people who have a lot of reasons for a name but for me I’m just going to go with whatever H and I like.  I feel like people shouldn’t even ask! I asked a customer once if she chose a name for her son (she was due soon) and she said the name and I was like Aw that’s cute! And that was that.
  • My mom and sister were suggesting names the other day (they’re convinced it’s a girl so only girl names lol) and I hated every single one. Okay, maybe not hate, but they weren’t my style. They were all trendy or top 10 names, My mom is obsessed with charley for a girl and although it can be cute and I wouldn't judge someone for picking it, I’m so over it. So if it’s a girl H and I will be deciding and not sharing until she’s born. And I’ll just tell my mom tough but no more suggestions because vetoing every name made me feel bad 😂
  • We’ve decided since this is our third and we don’t find out the gender that we won’t figure out a name until he/she arrives.  We have two girls already so I think we’re down with the mentality of not discussing boy names thinking it’ll probably be another girl 😂 Maybe reverse psychology will help haha

I always pick out a few names (had multiple ideas for the twins since we were team green) prior to delivery but don't set my heart on one. Glad I didn't with the twins because my daughter didn't seem to fit the names we had discussed and it took me three days after delivery to name her. Glad I changed her name too because now that's she older she certainly wouldn't have fit her first name (her name is Zara but originally I wanted to name her Luna...she's way too fiery to be a Luna lol).

  • @itsmehere1212 I agree with greyl, you don't need a reason to not like a name. DH and I have full veto power on each other's names and I don't want to have to give a big justification. "I don't like"/"it doesn't feel right" is fine. I had a name chosen for our firstborn before I even got pregnant. I loved this name. First trimester and I was like, "oh my god, I can't name my kid that!" Still love the name, but at the time it just felt wrong.
  • Hey there, wondering what people's thoughts were on this name. We like the name Clover for a girl. But our last name is Greenfield. Do you think Clover Greenfield seems to weird?
  • It seems woodsy lol I don’t know I really think name picking is tough. We pick names by family names or something that has meaning behind it. So if you love it go for it.

On a side note there here is a board on here that explains how to change your name so you don’t get lost in all the other “knottie” account names. It helps all of us get to know each other better too! Welcome!
  • I think clover greenfield is cute.

@ knottie personally I wouldn’t use it if I had your last name just because of the whole clover is a green plant thing so t think it might be a little interesting to put those two names together. I think Clover is cute though and idk how many people would actually think it’s weird
  • @knottie personally I wouldn't do it either, I don't mind the name Clover but to me Clover Greenfield provides perfect bully ammunition for other kids once school starts.
  • @knottie names are so tough and subjective, but it’s what you like that matters! It personally reminds me of that show I’ve seen advertised called cloverfield or something like that.
  • Thanks for everyones input! Do you think it would be better if it was Clove instead of Clover?
    Clove Greenfield?
  • I love both Clover and Clove and Clover is actually one you see getting more and more love on the name forums and blogs.
To me if I love a name enough then I don’t worry about kids making fun of it because honestly kids will find something to tease each other about no matter what.
When I chose Victor for my kiddo people were very concerned that kids would tease him by calling him Vicky and I took that into consideration and decided that I’ll call him Vicky (I actually call him Icky Vicky) and take any mean power out of it by making it something cute his mummy calls him. I had a friend who did the same thing and still calls her Melanie Smelly Melly.
  • I will also say that you should say the full name out loud every way that it might be said. We named our boy Victor Eugene W. and realized when we were filling out some paperwork at the hospital that when it is said with the middle initial he is Victor E W. Which sounds like we named him Victory lol it wasn’t bad in our case but it wasn’t planned for sure.
I’m also trying to be careful of initials. We are considering Finnegan Timothy but then his initials would be FTW
  • @beaandthebabes can I just say I love your chosen name? And I would actually love to have initials "FTW" 😛 which is fun and a little special. Much better than something like "WTF"!
  • Oh... oh no... I just realized that my chosen name makes her initials W E T. Ummmmm

  • @mflowers929 I’m sure most people won’t even think about her initials being WET my older sisters initials were EIO and we never heard too much about it.
  • My sons initials are JAB! My second boy will be IAB!
  • My aunts first name and middle initial is frances A, and her last name starts with g..... guess they didn’t think about that in the 60s? Maybe that word wasn’t so negative back then? Who knows!

I definitely take initials into account when thinking about names. I was thinking about a first and middle but then his initials would be ANL and that’s too close to anal I think lol
  • My married initials are wmp. My mom laughed and called me wimp. 😆 Also initials are not monogram so if that matters to you check into that as well. We got something monogrammed for my mom and discovered her’s is JEM when the last initial is in the middle. She is a jem. 🙂

  • Her middle name is to honor hubby's grandmother, so we might add my grandmother's name as an additional middle name. That would make it WEJT

  • My grandpa was Eugene Allen R so his was Ear and he was teased a little bit only because he happened to have pretty substantial ears lol
  • I can't remember which of you said you were using Wrenn for your sweet girl, but Wren Olivia has been on our short list since the beginning, love it so much!  Also liking Piper Larae/LaRae for a girl.

For a boy, we're still unsure, but Isaac Remy hasn't been taken off the list, and I also really like Jack but don't have anything to go with it yet.

We like names that are easy to spell and pronounce, and that won't be shortened to a nickname as my name is confusing that way.
  • @readytobemama Wrenn is my girl 😊
We have a name that's fairly common around here, but it's long and still misheard/mispronounced, so we definitely like simpler names. My cousins also have long complicated names for their kids so it's a contrast lol

I have loved names from a very young age. It was fun to read through everyones choices. And also nice to know I'm not alone in having no clue on names.
We are set on a boy name, I think. But I'm really struggling with girl names. There are a few on my list but I just don't love any of them.
Maybe once we know if baby is a boy or girl it'll be easier. Luckily DH has very similar taste and has only ever vetoed a handful of names I've liked.

We have always shared our names but I'm thinking it'll be fun to keep a secret this time. We'll see though because I doubt our kids can keep that secret so we wouldn't be able to share with them.
  • @slr1229 my son is Jacob and I loveeee his name! I don’t prefer the name Jake ans was worried people would call him jake, but I continue to call him Jacob and luckily that has stuck with people saying Jacob too. If he wants to be Jake once he’s older and likes that name for himself, then of course I’ll be fine with what makes him happy!

@robinj716 that’s great to know- I am not a fan of nicknames and people cutting names short so definitely was my worry.  My sister says just for us to keep saying Jacob and it’ll stick.  I’m praying it’s a boy so we can finally use it!!!
  • @slr1229 my brother is Jacob and I feel like we alternate between Jake and Jacob a lot but my parents have so that’s just what we’ve done. But I think it would be pretty easy to keep it Jacob until he decides if he wants to be called Jake.
  • I’m going to bring up names with H today. We haven’t really talked about it much since we found out the sex. I’m still stuck on Noah as it’s always been one of my favorite boy names. H is iffy on it so I want to ask him about it again. I just don’t know if I’ll be ready to fully commit until I see his face.
  • @greyl I love the name Noah! I also like Lucas, but my H didn’t agree on either one of those names.
  • @robinj716 Lucas is nice too!! Our last name starts with L so I’m not sure if I like the alliteration or not yet. my H didn’t veto Noah today but I’m kinda bummed because someone I’m going to be working with is named Noah. I feel like it will be weird even though I haven’t met this person yet. And I’ve always liked the name. H doesn’t think it’s a big deal but i feel like now I’m just going to associate the name with the employee and it will be ruined. Damn 😩
  • @greyl I love the name Noah.

  • @greyl you could try out Noah for a little while and see if it sticks. We are going with Ryan I know several Ryan’s and their is an annoying show that the kid is named Ryan but I still just love his name.
  • @robyn2201 it's been my #1 boy name for so long and of course it got super popular but H doesn't think we should care about that. I like it a lot!
@ktholysz that's what i'm thinking about doing! and I think this guy would have to be pretty terrible to ruin the name for me! After all I liked it before knowing I would be working with one. My mom really likes the name Ryan and wants me to use it as his middle name. She said my name would've been Ryan if I was a boy. It's a classy name!

@greyl Noah Ryan is actually super cute.
