Re: Weekly Randoms 1/6-1/12

  • Friends, this may be a REALLY stupid question, but I need to ask...

I'm listening to this fertility podcast and they keep talking about foods that help reduce inflammation and how reduced inflammation helps boost your fertility... BUT we are told not to take advil (at least my RE tells me not to) because it's an anti-inflammatory and will be counter-productive to my medicated cycles... isn't that sort of the same thing as eating foods that reduce inflammation?  Like doesn't anti-inflammatory mean that it's reducing inflammation? Am I being totally dumb here?

  • @kpearse99 I think eating foods to reduce overall inflammation is a different thing than taking an anti-inflammatory. According to WebMD, "anti-inflammatory drugs suppress inflammation in the body by blocking the production of substances called prostaglandins, and researchers suspect this function may also increase miscarriage risk." It may also interfere with implantation.

  • @mvt2003 i knew anti-inflammatory drugs could interfere with implantation and that's another reason the RE's want you not to take them, but I was curious about the reduction of inflammation from foods, so that response makes good sense to me... as in the foods that reduce inflammation don't effect the production of prostaglandins.  Thanks, friend!

  • @kpearse99 I am a recreational researcher, friend. Always available to you! :D

But actually though, I do have experience evaluating research just through school, to the point where both my OB and my RE have asked if I'm in the medical field, because I know both how to research and also how to figure out what's good research and what's not. :D

  • @mvt2003 I think that's a GREAT skill to have! I can research anything BUT I have no idea how good, valuable or valid it is!  :D  So I have another question for you then, my researching friend!

Vitamin D... I swear I read in my RE's info pack of what to and what not to do that they did not want us supplementing with Vitamin D, but I never asked why. Previously I was taking 10,000 IU a day but stopped once I read that back in June or July. The podcast was talking about how important it is for fertility and how most people don't get enough, so I was thinking of taking it again... help!

  • @kpearse99 My understanding was that vitamin D is critical to have enough of - that was one of the levels they tested when I started with my RE. I was already supplementing with it, and my RE's office called me and told me to up the supplementation even further. (I'm taking a prenatal multi, and have added 2,000 IU per the RE.) Could the recommendation have been to not supplement unless it's needed?

@kpearse99  There are a lot of people with vitamin D deficiency, so it is commonly supplemented.  I have been taking vitamin D supplements for over 3 years after being told that I was vitamin D deficient and needed to supplement.  My best guess on why it isn't necessarily recommended to automatically supplement vitamin D is probably due to vitamin D being a fat-soluble vitamin.  It is tougher for the body to get rid of excess amounts of fat-soluble vitamins, but vitamin D toxicity is still rare.  It is easier for the body to get rid of excess amounts of water-soluble vitamins.  I wonder if your RE would prefer to recommend vitamin D supplementation on a case by case basis.  (This is just my best guess.)

    *tw for baby talk*
So my coworker had a baby a few weeks ago. HR has put together a diaper creation party for during lunch (food is provided). Apparently this is a baby shower game I've never heard of where you take a bunch of diapers and make a tower/tiered cake looking thing and decorate it with ribbons, etc. and then the mom to be picks the winner.

HR is doing this, I'm presuming, because the baby came out over 9lbs so I can only guess that either newborn diapers didn't fit at all or they were only used for a few days before already needing to go up a size. So by using all these diapers for this game she will get to take these home once she finally comes in with the baby (to show) and picks a winner so she's stocked up on new diapers. I don't believe she's coming in today, we're just doing this ahead of time since I don't think it's known yet when she might pop in.

So, setting all that absurdity aside, should I even go to this? I mean it's free lunch and I'm not triggered by it. I'm more annoyed at the reason why we're even doing it, but do I even want to put myself in this position?

    What would you do?

ETA: so I spent like 2 minutes thinking about it and it was pretty clear that the idea of having to do this game as a guest at an actual shower and not being able to opt out would stress me out so considering this is entirely optional I'm going to take a pass and go out for lunch and enjoy myself

Uh..... Wth kind of company do you work for? I don't get it. Why would your HR decide that its their problem to fix? Unopened diapers can be returned and exchanged. Why not just feed your employees and not shove baby shower games in peoples faces???

  • @inthewoods23 im surprised an HR dept would come up with this plan...curious if she had a work shower-type event as well?

but i think its a great way of looking at it that you can opt out.  i think id do the same and if i felt so inclined, i would give a pack of diapers separately from the function.
    krystrist2014
  • @legendairymomma haha so, I think they're doing it more as a nice gesture than trying to fix a problem. I edited as you were posting and have decided I hate elaborate type party games like this and will be going out for lunch instead of participating

  • @inthewoods23 that's very interesting haha... I'm always one for free lunch. But I think the deciding factor, for me, would be how close I was to this co-worker. Are you friends with them? Or have actual interactions with them? My company is so large that there are people I don't even know, so if it was for someone I knew and actually interacted with, then I think I would go to it.

@inthewoods23  Oh my goodness, I just checked out that thread on the 1st Tri board.  I wanted to write a response, but I thought that everything that I wanted to write would lead to a warning or a ban.  I did laugh as I rolled my eyes.

  • @kpearse99 OMG! H&M announced that they're stepping down as "senior members" of the royal family, will be disentangling their finances from the queen to be financially independent, and will be focusing on their own work (with reporters of their own choosing, no more royal rota for them) and will be splitting their time between the UK and North America (aka Canada). They had their website set up and ready to go and everything, so this has been planned. BUT it seems they didn't tell the Queen, Charles, or William, just launched it!

  • @mvt2003 OMG how scandalous!!!!  I feel like it's very "uppity" of them to totally separate from the Royal Family. What the hell?

I unfortunately caught a glimpse of a birth announcement on FB yesterday and it showed up again this morning. Scrolled as FAST as I could

  • @kpearse99 I actually like that they're going to disentangle their finances from the royals - Charles has always said that he wants to streamline the monarchy, and Andrew is a very blatant example of privilege gone wrong. I do think they should give up their titles with the step-back though. I also think they've been very open about being unhappy, and I don't think this life is what they want. It's been pretty painful to watch two people be so blatantly unhappy.

  • @mvt2003 I'm sitting in jury duty going down a rabbit hole reading about all of this now. I have to wonder how the rest of the family is taking it... like is the Queen going to cut them out completely and shun them??
