  • @beckylookatherbump wait what’s the risk of an elective ultrasound? I always thought it was perfectly safe.
  • @zande2016 from what I understand they aren’t really sure what the risk is so the FDA just doesn’t recommend more than necessary for that reason. I decided that one ultrasound would be ok. High risk pregnancies get tons of ultrasounds, my one extra won’t matter.
  • @beckylookatherbump @zande2016 it’s just one of those things that hasn’t been extensively tested so better not to go overboard. The main concern is the potential for increased temperature but from what I’ve heard you’d have to have a reeeeeeally long ultrasound for there to be significant heating. My elective one was maybe 10 minutes? I did an elective one before we left for vacation since we were going out of the country. It was 100% worth it. So glad your experience was reassuring, too @beckylookatherbump
  • @rachelredhead yeah I was stressed that I overdid it at Disney and had done something to harm baby. So I totally think it’s worth it for anyone who was even half as stressed as I was.
  • I make my husband leave the room when they weigh me. @pocketrose @zande2016 I’ve always gained like 40 pounds with pregnancy and Im almost six feet tall so it’s not a small number lol

@beckylookatherbump the risk of extra ultrasounds is so, so, so very small. A proper facility will have their machines on the safest, low-power setting. They would have to have the power cranked up and keep the probe in one spot for a very, very extended period of time. Even then, the only side effects they’ve seen is some raised temperatures. Yes, the studies are limited, so it’s not something to overdo, but overall it’s fine. Enjoy an elective ultrasound all you want!
  • As someone who had a million ultrasounds (one every other week, occasionally every week, starting at 18 weeks) and now has a perfectly healthy child, the risk is so small I would not even worry about it. They would have to be a really bad sonographer to cause harm, and I doubt a bad sonographer works at an OB office. Enjoy seeing baby! I don’t know what I am going to do this go round with just a “normal” amount of ultrasounds, I loved seeing baby.
  • @kristinl492 and @kc0711 oh I’m not worried at all I just know some people have stated it’s not worth the risk, however, my anxiety has decreased so much I can’t imagine it was bad for baby. Happy mommy=happy baby.

@beckylookatherbump Exactly, the amount you were stressing was probably worse for you and the baby than any amount of ultrasounds to put your mind at ease! Glad you feel better!
  • Ah ok good to know. I had a lot of ultrasounds with my last pregnancy, including one that lasted about an hour because they were checking his heart and had to take a million photos of every part of it. So I wouldn’t think an extra 10 minute ultrasound would do anything.
