January Appointments

Re: January Appointments

  • I have my appointment tomorrow and I am so nervous... because of my BP and weight, I really doubt I gained weight because of nausea but still, I am excited about seeing baby with an actual baby form
  • Loading the player...
  • My first appointment with my new OB is tomorrow and I'm excited! Gonna ask about getting NIPT and quickly as I'm at 12.5 weeks. I weighed myself a few days ago and was at the same weight I was at when I went to my old OBGYN in November (was a small concern as I'm one of the very lucky ones who can count on one hand how many times I've been nauseous but I've also been hyper fatigued so bad combo re:gaining weight) so I imagine that's mostly good (am a bit overweight so I'm in the gain less than 25lbs camp if possible).
  • I have my 12 week Nucal appointment on the 7th.  First time at the high risk doctor.  I have my regular Dr appointment on the 20th.  Still waiting to hear about my NIPT results from the 16th.
  • @enchantindragon this has been a really long wait for your NIPT results! What the heck?
  • @enchantindragon I just got my nuchal US scheduled for the 7th too, and I'm also still waiting on my first trimester screen results. Fingers crossed for both of us that all goes well next week!
  • @modoodles I know! I got my results on Friday though, a healthy boy. Its a long story about why it took so long but at least it's finally over. I was a little shocked as I thought boy so assumed I was wrong as my last pregnancy I thought boy and was team green and it was a girl. Ill be fine it'll be fine just a little shocked at first. Its impossible to name a boy with my husband.

@meanjellybean oh I hope you get your results faster than I did. Are you hoping for a specific gender other than healthy? Good luck on the 7th. It will be nice to see baby again won't it?
  • I had my first OB visit last week. My OB said that they lowered the numbers for chronic hyper tension, which really doesn’t help me because I get high blood pressure every time. It was a little over whelming going over everything that went wrong last pregnancy and how to try and make this one as healthy as possible. My OB is having me do a 24 hour urine to get a baseline before I inevitably start showing preeclampsia symptoms. She’s also having me do an early diabetes screen since DD2 was born at 36x5 and weighed 8lb1oz. Plus extra lab work to check all levels.

It was pretty overwhelming but feels good to have a clear course of action to try and make this as healthy as possible!
  • @enchantindragon I have an appt with my OB this morning and am going to ask about the delay. I feel like I remember them giving me my results at the same time as the NT scan last time, and that is scheduled for tomorrow so maybe they will do it the same way this time. But the nurse had mentioned that I would get an email which I haven't so who knows! And no, I don't really have a gender I'm hoping for but also the results I'm waiting on are just the general first trimester screen (not NIPT or one of the other tests) so finding out gender wasn't an option. I'm just anxious because I feel like I've been loose-lipped about telling people this time and *TW I keep morbidly thinking we will find out something catastrophic at either the NT scan or from the blood screen and I'll then have to go back and tell people bad news *end TW*
  • How long does the NT scan usually take? I have mine tomorrow and I’m trying to figure out whether I should reschedule a meeting. Is it a longer scan?

@meanjellybean  I’ve had the same morbid anxiety. 😕 Hope we both get some lovely reassurance!
  • @meanjellybean good luck today! I was also pretty loose lipped with telling people this time and had the same concerns as you going into my 2nd US with the RE.
  • @blaf322 and @rachelredhead glad I'm not alone! And @rachelredhead they told me to allow 45 minutes but I don't remember it taking that long last time. I think it took like 20 minutes but you may have to wait for you appointment, and then if they can't get a good angle on baby I guess it could take longer. I pushed a call a half hour later after mine got scheduled, just in case. You don't want to be stressed getting out of there. I'm more worried about drinking the 24 ounces of water and not dying of pain and/or peeing myself when they press the ultrasound thingy on my belly.
  • @meanjellybean At my first US my face and teeth hurt I had to pee so bad. Apparently I overdid it because after I peed it was still a clear ultrasound.
  • @pocketrose lol the pain is real! And yeah, I'm not as worried now that I had my OB appt this morning and she ended up doing a quick abdominal ultrasound and had no issue getting a clear picture, and I had obviously just peed to give my urine sample.
  • @meanjellybean Did you get your results today?  How did everything go?

@rachelredhead I did my NT scan today  It was booked for an hour time but it didnt take that long.  Maybe about 45 minutes.  I got to see baby and they said its low for risks of Downs and such.  I learned I have an anterior placenta too so feeling baby is going to be harder this time around.  Hope your scan went well!
  • @enchantindragon glad your appointment was great! Mine went well, too, and we got lots of fun pictures of baby. Definitely reassuring to be on the other side of NT/NIPT tests. Grow baby grow!
  • @rachelredhead Yay. Next one is the anatomy one I think though I see my regular doctor on the 22nd so maybe another peek would be nice. You're having a boy too right?
  • @enchantindragon yep! DH and I both have two nieces on our sides, no nephews, so we’re excited to balance the scales. My SIL is pregnant, too, due in August, so this summer is gonna be baby crazy. Yeah, I’m guessing anatomy scan is the next one and that feels years away. I have an appt with OB on Friday so I figure she’ll tell me the schedule then.
  • @enchantindragon yes everything went great! Except for baby being extra stubborn so it took longer than I remember with DD. And the tech had to murder my abdomen trying to get the little one to flip/turn around lol. Ouch. AND at the end she scared the shit out of us because she was like ok, someone else will be in to discuss your first trimester screen results. I started to get really worried because I didn't remember that from last time - I thought the tech just handed us the paper and was like "all good!" This time, she left the room for what felt like a longggg time while I frantically googled the NT measurement she had taken (great idea...not), then finally she came back in herself and handed us the paper and was like you're low risk for everything blah blah... Thanks for the panic, lady!
  • @nursejenn5 I guarantee you’re not the first person with a list on your phone, and you won’t be the last either! I always kept my list of questions on my phone, and I still do the same thing for pediatrician appointments! It’s too easy to forget something if you don’t have a list. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Glad your appt went well!
  • I have my 12 week appointment tomorrow morning. I’m honestly a little nervous, even though we’ve had 3 healthy ultrasounds already, and I feel good/pregnant.
  • @angemtn I feel you on that one. the day or so leading up to any appointment I get nervous (even though I feel everything is good)
  • @nursejenn5 I did the same thing and then when she came back in for my pap I was typing her answers into it 🤦🏼‍♀️ Oh well!
  • Hey @nursejenn5 and @b_1029 what kinds of questions have you asked? My mind is completely blank right now and I have first real visit tomorrow.
  • @nursejenn5 I always have question lists for my MD visits (if I have issues or questions). I'm sure they're used to it.

@modoodles It's a little premature, but I'd ask about anything in your birth plan that could be up for debate so that if something really important to you isn't something they'll do, you can look elsewhere. Also, if there's anything you're doing/consuming and you want to find out if it's okay, ask that. If you're BFing, maybe you want to see if they have recs for LCs? You could ask about if/how you'll meet the other doctors in the practice. Just some ideas. I also don't really have any questions other than the whole 140 HR during exercise thing.

@modoodles I asked if she’d be delivering me or if it was whoever’s on call, frequency of appts, what should prompt me to call the office or go to the hospital, any restrictions I might not be thinking of as a clueless FTM, any precautions I should take while traveling (going to CO in a few weeks), and some specific ones about my medical history and if it could affect the possibility of a vaginal birth

edited to fix wording because I’m apparently dumb and don’t know acronyms
  • @b_1029 VBAC and FTM... I'm confused lol
  • @blaf322 yeah I’m dumb. I thought that just meant vaginal birth. Sorry.
  • haha.. .no worries @b_1029 I was thinking maybe you had some other surgery that would impede your ability for a vaginal birth and I was totally curious!

  • @blaf322 nothing “down there” haha but I had an artery dissection in my neck like 6 years ago so that’s specifically what I was asking her about
  • @b_1029 eek! Definitely a good one to ask about!
  • @blaf322 if you’re on Instagram there’s a moveyourbump page that has great exercise info (though always still ask your doc. But new research not all providers have gotten behind to support yet!) my doc says definitely keep hr under 160 and at 140 to start slowing down a bit. But these days it’s so easy to get to 140 then I already feel like I’m dying so 🤷🏻‍♀️
  • I had my first appt with my OB's office yesterday! I just met with a CNM but it was still good. I had this giant list of questions haha and she just gave me this pregnancy booklet they give to all the patients and said to read it and the answers were in there, so that was kind of annoying but oh well. I also miss the excitement of the staff at my RE's office....they were always so excited and supportive, while the OB's office is just like "okay, another pregnancy". I get that they see this all day every day but this is my first pregnancy and I have so many emotions about it!! I was super nervous and the MA was like "why are you nervous?" and just stared at me and I was like "um well this is all new to me....."

@modoodles the questions I asked were about my current prescription meds, what kinds of exercise and nutrition they recommend, what signs and symptoms should be considered "emergencies" and who to contact in case of emergency, if they think I'll be high risk, what testing they recommend, and how often they'd like to see me.

  • So, I have my 12 week appointment next week and I realized she hadn’t mentioned anything about my NT Scan. I called the office to confirm that I will be having the scan that day and they told me that they don’t do a scan or ultrasound at 12 weeks if you have a NIPT.  This is the first time I have ever heard that NIPT replaces the 12 week ultrasound and scan.  Has anyone else been told this?  I am planning on arguing to have it done.  I wouldn’t have another ultrasound until 18 weeks if I don’t have one next week. *T.W  I have a history of losses so I’m just not ok with this.
  • @knockupthestock I felt the same as you with moving from RE to OB office with my first US for DD. In my head I was like, "ummm.... where's your excitement?! Don't you know how special this is?!" lol
  • @mischief-managed I had the same experience with my OB on NT scan. In some practices that's evidently the norm.
I ended up having an elective us in part b/c I was telling my family over holiday.  If I had done what they wanted exclusively I would have gone from 8 weeks to 20 weeks w/o us. Two appointments with dopplers mixed into that range.  Cannot hurt to argue.
  • @mischief-managed I asked about the NT scan yesterday because she never mentioned it and she said it’s not needed if you do NIPT also. I had never heard that before. I did have a 12w US though.

@knockupthestock I felt so weird yesterday in the OB office! First of all the waiting room at the RE was so tiny and completely silent (since obviously we all just stare at our phones and don’t speak). The Ob waiting room was huge, packed, LO’s running around, etc. So different.

@mischief-managed my office doesn't do NT scans, so I had my early dating US around 7-8 weeks and then my next one isn't until the anatomy scan at 20 weeks. It's my understanding that NIPT results are more reliable than NT scans, but don't take my word for it. If it's making you uncomfortable, I think it's perfectly reasonable to ask to have one done anyway.

ETA: I did do NIPT though. Not sure if I'd not done that if I would've had one or not.
