Going in on Friday for my 24 week check-in to meet our backup midwife and schedule my glucose test. Hoping I won't have to do the 3-hour one but I'm a major sugarvore and have PCOS so we'll see. Also bringing my best friend, who will still be in town until Saturday, so she can hear bean's heartbeat
Apt on the 10th for US to see placenta location, check on fluid levels (issue last pregnancy bc of genetic issues from our son). Also for the glucose test.
TW: 1 infant loss 8/17: Our daughter was born 8/18: Our daughter kicked open heart surgery ass 2/19: We lost our son to Prader-Willi/Paradoxical Vocal Cord/ Noonans at 6wks old 4/26/2020: EDD for baby #3!!!
Next appointment is 1/15 for my repeat 3-hour glucose test. Super yuck. I really hope I pass it. Hate to think that I’m taking the test so many times and still have to do the diet.
On 1/21 I have a fetal echo. Next growth scan isn’t until February.
Baby is right on track! Fundal height was a perfect 24 centimetres at 24 weeks and we got to hear them give a little kick on the doppler. It was really nice to have my bestie in town to join me and hear baby. Next time she visits baby will be here!
January 8th I have a repeat ultrasound to check placenta placement, January 13th midwife appointment and glucose test, January 17th meeting the lactation consultant and doing preregistration! Midwife appointments will be every two weeks from here on out.
@jd614 Is this the 1 hour or the 3 hour? What instructions did the doctor give you? For my 1 hour, I was told no food or drink except water starting 2 hours before my appointment, so I could have breakfast and coffee early if I wanted. For my 3 hour, I was told no food or drink except water after midnight.
@korthouse Hope the glucose test went well! I too have PCOS and between that, my weight, and a grandparent who had Type 2 diabetes, they decided I should have one early. So I had one at 18 weeks and passed that one. Next one for me is in 2 days - this Friday. Here's hoping I pass again!
@jd614 Definitely what @mercury94 said about asking your doctor as different doctors have specific instructions. For my 1 hour, my doctor did not say anything about not eating a certain amount of time before, so I ate eggs and sausage at 8:30 AM and started drinking my drink at 10:05 AM. I plan on doing something similar again on Friday as I have a repeat 1 hour exam because of the reasons above. I definitely would have been nauseated and had a headache if I hadn't eaten anything, so I'm glad I didn't have to fast. I really hope I don't have to do the 3 hour one because of the fasting.
I just got the results from my one-hour and I scored 139. They said I have to take the 3 hour because the threshold is 135. But of course I started Googling and all the sites I saw (including Mayo Clinic) said the threshold is 140. I'm close enough that I guess it doesn't matter, but I'm curious what you all have heard.
@liligirl87 I’ve never asked what threshold my OB uses. I’ve just done the 3 hour to keep everyone happy. I know some OBs are extreme, though. SIL was put on the GD diet because she was “borderline,” then her OB induced early because she was worried baby would get too big, even though she was always measuring small. My niece was barely 6 pounds when she was born. I think her OB was just crazy.
@mercury94 Oh my God!!! That is truly extreme. My friend was constantly told by her OB that her baby was huge and she was going to give birth to a 9.5lb baby. She opted for a day-of C section because of that diagnosis and her baby was 8 lb 2 oz. Aren't we all paranoid enough (I know I am) without these fire drills? Bleh...
Yesterday was a tough day for me. The 3 hour glucose and then I had to go to work, which was crazy yesterday afternoon. This morning I got a message in the portal that o didn’t fail the 3 hour test, but I did fail the last blood draw, so my OB recommends some diet changes anyway. Not excited about trying to decrease sugar.
@mercury94 that’s good that you didn’t fail it and it sounds like your OB is just being cautious. My first pregnancy with DD all I craved was sweets and those cravings can be powerful.
Today I had a growth ultrasound and my 28 week appointment with the 1 hour gestational diabetes test. Babies are both in the normal range and on track (and wiggling around!). Got the Tdap shot and the paperwork to pre-register at the hospital and found out that my c-section will be April 1 (during week 38) unless babies decide to come earlier. Just got the test results and I passed the GD test. Next prenatal is Jan 30 for my 30 week apt. Time seems to be going fast!
@korthouse I know!! My dr’s day in the hospital is Wednesday and they can’t schedule before I hit 38 weeks... I tried to convince the day or week earlier or the next day but it was a no go!!! And we’re not waiting until April 8.
@mercury94 OMG yes!! It is kicking my butt into gear and apparently my husband’s too. He brought DD’s crib up from the basement and put it together in the nursery.
@mandarenee898 One of my dear friends is an April Fools baby and she is just a fantastic human being. I think it bodes well. Also it means you can forever prank them on their birthday if you want to
Everything seems on track from my appointment this week, and I just found out I passed the one hour screening! So relieved. Based on the history of diabetes in my family, I was prepared to fail!
My 1 hour glucose test got rescheduled for noon on the 27th instead of being in the morning on the 29th. Worried that I'll have had too much to eat prior to pass it. Do I try to just sleep in extra or something? I know I don't need to fast for it, but it sounded so much easier if I could just have a light proteiny breakfast and scoot on in.
@korthouse I was expecting to fail so I still ate but tried what others have said on this board and had more protein based food vs sugar and carbs. I was surprised when I passed since I kept hearing so many twin mamas get GD.
@korthouse I failed my 1 hour by 4 points and when I went for my 3 hour this weekend the phlebotomist said that she always recommends people fast for the 1 hour as well even though the doctor doesn't make that recommendation. Who knows if it would have helped. My 1 hour was at 1pm (blood drawn at 2pm) and I hadn't eaten since maybe 10:30ish. And before that I had a veggie cheese omelette. I don't know the actual answer but if you're nervous I guess it couldn't hurt to stop eating as early as feasible. Better than the 12 hour fast for the 3 hour
Just finish my fetal echo. It was a new experience. I’ve had countless echos of my own heart due to a condition diagnosed when I was a baby. I’m so amazed at the technology that gets these views in utero. It went as well as it could. He said he didn’t see any reason to come back or to do an echo after birth unless my OB or pediatrician saw a need for concern. It did take an hour and a half because she was stubborn and made it hard to get some of the views. Also, he basically told me that if she had the same condition I do, it might not show up because it’s such a small defect and there’s only so much you can see on a fetus. So, no guarantees, but no reason to worry.
@mercury94 I'm so glad that you had a good appointment! I have my fetal tomorrow and I was wondering how it's different than a regular look at the heart during an anatomy scan. Do they use a different type of ultrasound machine? Did they give you and good pictures of baby girl or was it strictly heart? I'm so glad you don't have to go back and you can breathe a little easier.
The doctor just called to recommend that she get an echo at 2 months because he might see something very minor now that he’s looking at the images again. I’m trying not to worry about it. I know from experience that something very minor means a normal life outside of occasional visits to the cardiologist.
@literatureandink It seems like the same machine, but so does the one they used when they did the echo of my heart. I don’t know enough to tell if there are different buttons or anything. I didn’t see much of the baby except when they were trying to find her heart. They weren’t focused on anything else. I saw a lot of her spine because it was continually blocking her heart apparently.
@mercury94 what condition do you have? i have pulmonary valve stenosis- very minor, no intervention needed just regular monitoring as a kid. I've learned almost ANY time they think there could be something, or there is a family history, they ask to do a follow up at a few months old, just as precaution. Especially with PVS- because it is based around pressures of the heart pumping, and those don't clearly show until baby is out and breathing on their own.

@smallbutmighty77 I have a ventricular septum defect. It’s a hole between the ventricles that leads to leakage and mixing of oxygenated and unoxygenated blood. They just check it once a year now. When I was younger, they checked it more frequently, but have never recommended surgery, though most people do have surgery to close it.
@liligirl87 and @korthouse That's basically the same advice my doctor gave me to pass. I haven't had mine with this LO yet, but it worked with DD2. She said high protein, low carb, no sugar, and to eat at least an hour before.
Fetal echo later today- fingers crossed everything looks good for this kiddo! I know it can't tell me everything, but this far along it can give me a pretty good picture- so I'm anxious
