I am 39 weeks pregnant and lost my mucus plug tonight and now experiencing very strong painful back pain. But seems impossible to "track" the pain. Could this be early labor? 2 days ago I was 80% effaced 3cm dilated

Sounds like the start of labor. But it could also be prodromal. Try to rest during this early time and save your energy for the main event.

Sometimes labor presents as constant back pain, depending on baby’s position. Losing your mucous plug means nothing in relation to labor though. I realize this is a day late, but your back pain is worth a call to your birthing center.
