GTKY: Thanksgiving Edition!

One’s got to go: what *traditional* Thanksgiving menu item are you taking off the list?

What are any traditions specific to you or your fam that you uphold on Thanksgiving?

What and who are you most grateful for?

Re: GTKY: Thanksgiving Edition!

  • One’s got to go: what *traditional* Thanksgiving menu item are you taking off the list? No to anything sweet potato when it is just MH and I... I'm eh about them to begin with but I'd NEVER replace traditional mashed potatoes for mashed sweet pots

What are any traditions specific to you or your fam that you uphold on Thanksgiving? honestly not really... my thanksgivings were very different than MH's. For example, football was never on in my house but it is a huge deal for his family... so our little family doesn't really have one that sticks and I think we are trying to forge the way currently

What and who are you most grateful for?  Obviously our families who are amazing and supportive. My husband who really is too wonderful for me haha and this healthy pregnancy after our loss in March.

  • Oh I love this! Nice idea @kagesstarshroom

One’s got to go: what *traditional* Thanksgiving menu item are you taking off the list?

I would also get rid of the turkey. I’m all about the side dishes. I could not part with mashed or sweet potatoes, stuffing, corn bread, or cranberry sauce.

What are any traditions specific to you or your fam that you uphold on Thanksgiving?

We eat homemade cinnamon rolls and watch the parade and then the dog show. We are not a football family. I just finished preparing the cinnamon rolls and two apple pies, and now I need to nap for a week!

What and who are you most grateful for?

I am most grateful for a hardworking husband and two (almost three) healthy children.

  • One’s got to go: what *traditional* Thanksgiving menu item are you taking off the list? Nothing really, we are pretty basic when it comes to our dinner.  Turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, green bean casserole, a veggie tray, deviled eggs, and pies for dessert.  And yes that is a ridiculous amount of food.   :o

What are any traditions specific to you or your fam that you uphold on Thanksgiving? we watch the football game, because DH is a big lions fan.  a tradition we've started as DD has gotten older is letting her help DH make the deviled eggs, she loves that it's now their 'thing'.  Before dinner, we go around the table and say what we're thankful for.

What and who are you most grateful for? I'm most grateful for family and friends, and of course that this pregnancy has gone well so far.

  • One’s got to go: what *traditional* Thanksgiving menu item are you taking off the list? Probably stuffing, I mean I like stuffing but I don’t like it when it’s from inside the turkey bc it kind of grosses me out so I usually make stovetop and I don’t think I’d miss it too bad, not as much as everything else.

What are any traditions specific to you or your fam that you uphold on Thanksgiving? Nothing really, I moved 8hrs from my family and do thanksgiving with DH’s family so we don’t do my family’s traditions. His doesn’t really have any. Maybe we can make some new ones while kiddos are young.

What and who are you most grateful for? DH and DS and the little guy on the way!

  • @treetop19 Haha, the "one's gotta go" is like--you HAVE to part with something! It's a thing I got from a meme that usually shows like four things & you have to sacrifice one. It's hypothetical! ...also now I want deviled eggs.

@chichiphin Aw, don't be sad, sorry I made you sad! Maybe you can have it play a part in one of you & YH's new traditions! ^_~* Side note: Guthrie played Philly Folk Fest a few years ago when he was on his Alice's 50 anniversary tour and did the whole thing and then a new version and it was so great. I probably cried.

  • @kagesstarshroom, ah, that makes sense now.  lol.  well.. if something 'had' to go, I'd say the green bean casserole.. we all like it, but it takes up extra oven space/timing to make and the meal would probably be easier to put together without it.  plus it makes a lot of extra food which isn't super necessary when it's just the immediate fam.

  • One’s got to go: what *traditional* Thanksgiving menu item are you taking off the list? I'd probably have to go with the consensus so far and pick turkey as well. I really love everything about a traditional Thanksgiving dinner though.

What are any traditions specific to you or your fam that you uphold on Thanksgiving?  We used to do two Thanksgivings on Thanksgiving Day, lunchtime with DH's extended family and dinnertime with my parents.  This year will be different because DH's grandmother passed away, so we are moving the lunchtime meal to Friday and it will be just DH's parents.  I'm excited for spreading out the meals so I can better enjoy them this year!

Food-wise - there are two traditional food items on DH's side that are a bit non-standard - pineapple stuffing and fluffy cranberry salad.  MIL still plans to make them both this year, and they are yummy!

What and who are you most grateful for? DH for the huge amount of stepping up he has done during this pregnancy with caring for the kids and the house, my boys (including the bubb in my belly) because goodness I love them, my mom for watching my boys during the week so I can work from home and helping me keep the house respectable, and my dad and in-laws for always being available to help when needed.

  • One’s got to go: what *traditional* Thanksgiving menu item are you taking off the list?

Green bean casserole! It’s just not good. Replacing with roasted Brussels sprouts and glazed carrots. Mmmmm

What are any traditions specific to you or your fam that you uphold on Thanksgiving?

My family didn’t really have any. It was just about eating great food and being around family and/or friends. H’s traditions are more intense. He’s into certain movies: Peanuts Thanksgiving, Garfield’s Thanksgiving (its horrible), and for some reason he loves watching the movie “A Man for All Seasons.” It has nothing to do with the holiday.

He also got me started on cinnamon rolls in the morning. My mom would always keep it a little healthier, haha.

What and who are you most grateful for?

My family! Duh. :) H, DD, baby on the way, and my parents and sister.

  • One’s got to go: what *traditional* Thanksgiving menu item are you taking off the list? Since I’m a vegetarian, turkey is the easy answer. Like Chichiphin, I greatly dislike all things sweet potato.

What are any traditions specific to you or your fam that you uphold on Thanksgiving? I need to learn all my mom’s recipes so I can make her thanksgiving food. I love it all so much.

What and who are you most grateful for? Same as everyone else: my family—DS, DH, and the baby coming

  • @silverhope I do like sweet potatoes, but I don't like when they are overly sweet? HOEVER someone brought a sweet version of sweet potatoes to our house yesterday, they were soooo goooood. I am gonna ask her for the recipe I think!

A thing I am NOT grateful for: We had grad students over yesterday, as I am one of them, and the people I know are of a variety of ages--I do NOT understand how any adult person would not scrape their plate before putting it in the sink? I had filled and run the dishwasher last night, so I didn't expect anyone to load their plate in, but this morning, there were so many plates that had like shit still stuck to them in my sink. Thank god we have a garbage disposal! I don't know what's worse--adult humans piling unscraped dishes into the sink OR just leaving them sitting around, not even putting them near the sink (as the other thing I imagine happening is other people/DH just piling other people's unscraped dishes in the sink.)

Also, someone I didn't invite showed up? How does that happen. He brought a dish and everything. Everyone who was invited knowssss I had a spreadsheet where people sign up for food--IDK how he gets invited without someone I did invite 1) asking me if it's okay if he comes 2) telling him about my spreadsheet (it's a scared drive file). We had more than enough food, *but still*. (And yes, I gave him shit, in a kind-of-but-not-really joking way. The AUDACITY, though!)

  • @kailanae my best friend makes pineapple stuffing for our Friendsgiving every year and it is my absolute favorite!

One’s got to go: what *traditional* Thanksgiving menu item are you taking off the list? We never make green bean casserole because there’s too many ingredients in it that pickier family members don’t like. I love every Thanksgiving food though.

What are any traditions specific to you or your fam that you uphold on Thanksgiving? DH and I have spent Thanksgiving with different family members over the years, but we always watch the Macy’s parade in the morning no matter where we are.

What and who are you most grateful for? Just everything that was mentioned above: DH, this pregnancy (our first!), family, being homeowners, wonderful friends, a great job (even though I’m annoyed about working today).

  • @kagesstarshroom I’d be annoyed about the uninvited guest. and yea, it’s really not hard to scrape a plate.

@kailanae i had never heard of pineapple stuffing until u mentioned it but then someone made it at my in laws’ friends’ thanksgiving.
