Re: UO 11.14

  • I don't understand excessive decorating for holidays. We do a tree, and sometimes some stair rail garland. It's possible I'm missing a nesting gene  :D I also can't fathom spending a lot of time or money decorating a nursery. It's just not in my DNA, and decorating is SO EXPENSIVE unless you DIY, which I definitely don't. I'm the least crafty/creative person ever.

  • @stassischroeder I think I’m missing the nesting gene too! We do a tree and I have a couple little decorations I put out. DH puts lights on the outside. Nothing crazy just a few. I never ended up getting DS’s nursery decorated. By the time our house buying saga closed I was 8 months pregnant and working 12hr days so I was too tired to actually decorate. He seems fine. We’re going to try and decorate his big boy room some more to entice him to accept the move across the hall 🤣

  • @varimama yeah I bought some wall art for DS's room, but never actually hung it up LOL. Whenever I see a perfectly decorated nursery I think it looks lovely, but also think how they're going to have to redecorate in a few years. If I had oodles of money I'd totally hire someone to redecorate my house every few years, but at this point it's REALLY far down on the priority list.

  • @miss.sally I wish I had your creativity and eye for design! Your house always looks lovely! I can appreciate nice spaces, but I have no idea how to create them myself. It overwhelms me!

  • @stassischroeder Our roommate was like "yeah so where will the baby live when it's born" and i was like ....in our room. Because even if we could afford to kick him out and have the baby have a room of its own, we def. couldn't afford to decorate a nursery. So while I can get behind other people's nurseries looking cute, I either am missing the nesting gene, haven't gotten there yet, or we are too broke for me to even consider.

My UO: I feel like the NFL is trying way too hard this month with Salute to Service stuff, and instead of actually making them look good, it's making them look bad bc they are clearly only going overboard with everything to try to win back fans who misinterpreted Colin Kapernick's protests as being anti-military when they clearly effing weren't. They do Salute to Service every year, but usually it's not so much. It just comes off as inauthentic and try-hardy rather than poignant, and I want it to be more poignant.

  • My UO (I guess?):

    Disney +... who cares?

@stassischroeder I don’t decorate much at all—just standard tree, lights, stockings, but honestly, I love it when people do and admire it and want my space to look like their space haha. I WANT to be that person, but I’m not. When I’m done having babies… then I'm going to have myself seasonly decorated (and be organized, and look perfect, and have perfect skin, and be patient, and eat 100% healthy, and read one book a week, hahaha).

@kagesstarshroom I totally feel you on this. I’m so over the NFL, and I’m a die hard fan… their responses to domestic violence floor me with their ineptitude.

  • @kagesstarshroom I have ALWAYS been so uncomfortable with the forced patriotism in sports. esp because the DoD pays the NFL for most of it as it is a huge marketing ploy. so insincere

@stassischroeder i was like that for a long time with decor - but something last year really made me dive in and now I can't wait for the weekend after thanksgiving to "turn over" the house to christmas lol

afm? I read in some stupid Parents.com article that registering for big ticket items and essentials like a crib or big stroller is inappropriate. whatever dude. if someone wants to buy it - thank you!! if not - no big deal and at least I bookmarked the damn thing I want lol

  • @chichiphin lollll i feel like for so long my registry was JUST big ticket stuff, shoot! Like, we NEED that stuff! And are broke! As I am constantly reminding everyone lol sorry. One of my registries (I have one on Target and one of Amazon, I forget which) offers the option for people to put money towards big ticket items, rather than buying them outright, so that maybe counters this article a bit?

  • @kagesstarshroom, I can relate to you on the nursery thing.. my LO won't have her own room either.  She'll stay in our room until she's big enough to transfer to a crib and then she'll share a room with DS.  So, in addition to not having her own room, she'll be sharing with a boy, so I won't do anything super girly for her.

@stassischroeder, I'd love to be more of a decorator, but I'm pretty much limited on time and money these days.  I did attempt to make DD's nursery nice (her dad and I painted the walls pink/yellow, we hung up artwork, ect.), but then we ended up having to move when she was just 4 months so it ended up being wasted effort.  I never attempted to do anything fancy for DS, he's just got white walls and a few pictures hanging up.. I'm glad I didn't, because I'm going to have to have him switch rooms with DD when this LO is born (DD has the larger room.. and the 2 kiddos sharing are going to need it.)  And I highly doubt his teen sister would appreciate it now if I had dolled up his room as a boy nursery.  lol.

@emilylove25, I was super into Disney movies as a kid, but my kids haven't really been into them all that much.  (Of course, they have 100s of other options now for kids shows that didn't exist when I was a kid.)  So, Disney + isn't a big deal to us either.

  • Oh man @EmilyLove25 I am Disney obsessed. I thought I was a Disney princess well into college. 😂. I’m STOKED for Disney+. My kids are semi-into it. It’s definitely more for me than for them.  Lol. But I don’t care!

  • @miss.sally, I’m 100% with you. My UO - if I’m going to watch TV, I want it to be mostly happy and fun and not serious. DH and I can never agree on any shows or movies that aren’t comedies because why would I spend the emotional energy watching a “serious” movie or political thriller or horror? I have a much more diverse palate when it comes to books, but Disney forever when it comes to TV.

  • Ah I’m all about interior decor! It’s my creative outlet and honestly my passion, I love curating spaces so much and seeing them come together. And the nursery! I’m so excited to decorate a nursery for baby girl but something she can grow into for sure.
i can understand why someone may not love it as much and may find it frivolous or just unnecessary.

It’s kind of like how I don’t understand the appeal of high end designer clothing or fancy cars. I like quality and certain brands for fit and style, but like why do I need a Gucci or LV handbag? I worked at coach and Kate space before and I only have a couple of handbags form each that I got at 75% off lol. So 🤷🏻‍♀️ I just want something sleek and stylish and functional. Fancy cars... my goodness my car is from 2004. I drove my aunt’s Porsche Targa last year and I was like, meh. I prefer my massive intrepid 😂 as long as it’s safe and it gets me from A to B

  • loooll @stassischroeder I’d be down for a little comp! And totally get the splurge on some food items, accommodations, and plane tickets.

  • @stassischroeder @dunder_mifflin LOL forever!  I'm not sure I would win the decorating face-off but I would totally try my hardest!!!  I just love watching a room come together.  I'm working on getting rid of stuff that I've accumulated over the years and it's proving to be SOOOOOOOO hard.  Why do I form an emotional attachment to STUFF?
    stassischroederprojectalicemiss.sally
  • @dunder_mifflin About the bags, I used to have vintage LV bags. They were appealing because they went with anything, but the main thing was they lasted FOREVER. They were the most durable things EVER. I could buy a 30 year old purse, submerge and wash it in my sink, dry it in my dryer, wipe down the outsides and it was good as new.
As long as the canvas had no cracks (I always checked before buying) if the brass hardware needed replacing or the leather I could drop off a 30 year old purse at LV, they would repair it and send it back to me good as new.
I have never found another brand that is as good as that. :) So I'm a big fan. Sadly I sold my purses during my first pregnancy and I really miss them.... Once my business is going I would love to get another purse or 2. The vintage purses are the best imo, and also cheaper than brand new.
    miss.sallyMalidocious
  • @projectalice I totally feel like vintage or second-hand designer bags are the exception to this for me! For exactly the reasons you outlined. I would 100% wear, buy, own vintage designer bags.
    Malidociousprojectalice
  • @dunder_mifflin I had to stop browsing the second hand LV groups because they had some beautiful vintage purses at really great prices! I just couldn't afford them right now so I didn't want to get upset seeing the good deals. 😂🙈
