GTKY: What's Your Jam?

What are you into? What really does it for you? What makes you go "yeah!" when you find out others dig it too? What's... your jam?

  • @keeksie84 LOL I'm just a poet who loves football, nothing cool about it. I watch a lot of TV, truly, but don't love any of it enough to have it stick out as my "jam." You sound like you are doing important work reducing your carbon footprint--that's very respectable! Also I love Hello Kitty too haha & most things Japanese culture (except whaling! why, Japan, why.) Walgreens had a sale right after Valentine's Day this year, and I bought not one but three Hello Kitty pez dispensers bc they were under $2 each--one for me, and the other two for people's kids I know.

    @varimama I'm a big HP fan too--my user name here & all being my character in the Harry Potter Hogwarts Mystery I play on my phone! Bigger fan of the books than the movies, though, and not happy w/ Rowling's inability to let the HP-verse just exist without her input these days. I thought that would mean I'd dislike the new Fantastic Beats movies, but I did actually like the first one. I tried to watch the newest one last night on my Direct Go app via my Firestick, but the sound was super very low for some reason--JUST FOR THAT MOVIE. I was so mad.
  • Classical music, especially choral music
    coffee

    whales and turtles
    Hamilton

    David Sedaris
    Funny tv shows
    Vegetable gardening (I’m a novice though)
    Running (also a novice and very slow)
    nature
    wine

  • I’m into replacing lawn with native plants or food, mushroom foraging (and foraging in general), oil painting, sustainability, engaging in local politics, Elizabeth Warren, Janet Lansbury, and Tolstoy. Among other things!
  • Fantasy novels, video games, Dungeons and Dragons (very recently - within the past year), watching Twitch streams of other people playing video games/D&D. :lol: I'm a nerd.  I'm also an anime/manga fan but haven't had the time to get into it in as much in the past few years.  I've also breastfeed for nearly all of the past 4 years (DS1 weaned part way through my pregnancy with DS2, and DS2 is still currently very much into breastfeeding.)

    @keeksie84 Hello Kitty is so cute! :heart:
    @kantobean Also a classical music fan!  I played the violin all through school and met my husband in high school orchestra.  I love traditional orchestral music and movie scores.

  • @sunflower_auryn - I just came back from northern michigan - hubby's parents live there.  it is a beautiful area!

    I too, am an extended breastfeeder.  DD was weaned at 18 months due to the fact that I had to take a powerful antibiotic that would pass through the milk.. DS weaned at 2 and a half but probably would have gone longer had I let him.  @kantobean - DS is also a Feb 16 baby.  I lurked a little on that BMB but never participated.  :)  and I agree, pumping at work is the worst - at my old office, they didn't have a set room for me, so I was just kind of dodging in and out of conference rooms all day, and getting people pissed at me when I was in 'their' room.

    otherwise, my interests..
    Writing - was a former newspaper reporter, love writing poetry, short-stories, blog posts
    Reading - anything, really
    Outdoor life - Camping and hiking - though I'm not a big fan of fishing, don't like sitting there for hours.
    Animals - I love most all animals, especially dogs.  I grew up on a farm and my favorite part of that was the animals.
    Coffee and wine - because who can't live without coffee and wine

  • @treetop19 so cool to have another F16 mama here! Yay!

    And yeah, not looking forward to pumping at work, although this time I have a new classroom in a completely new wing of the building, and the wing also includes a Mother’s room! I’m super excited to get to use it!
  • @kantobea +1 for Hamilton!!! And whales! I almost put whales. I actually taught a course based around the Hamilton soundtrack a year & a half ago. I've never been able to *see* it, though. Also, have you heard David Sedaris's voice? I was listening to Selected Shorts on NPR on Friday & I just... never realized that was his voice.

    @orbmaker +1 for Elizabeth Warren!

    @treetop19 Aw yay another writer!

    @janice9821 Mmm Thai food.
  • @kagesstarshroom yes to all of that! Love Hamilton and saw it in Chicago in January. It’s coming to my city this fall but I don’t think we’ll get tix just because I missed the cue. 😂 I love Lin Manuel Miranda and I have his “Good Morning/Good Night” book and sometimes I read them to my students! That’s so cool you taught a class on Ham. I would take that!!!

     Also, I love David Sedaris’s voice. It is surprisingly high!  Listening to him read his own work just makes it so much funnier. I’ve read I think 5 of his books and the two I listened to on tape were the best! I’m normally not a book-on-tape person but with his work it’s so much better that way.
  • @kantobean and @kagesstarshroom, David Sedaris's Holidays on Ice book on tape is the best! Just remembering the part where he talks about working as a department store elf makes me chuckle.

  • @emilylove25 LOVE the National. I also really love teaching Samuel Beckett to undergrads.... though I'm primarily an Americanist. Have you ever watched... Waiting for Elmo?
  • @kagesstarshroom Never even heard of Waiting for Elmo... will look for it now! I definitely have seen Waiting for Guffman though! Americans aren't too bad either :smile: In terms of living authors, all of my favorites are American!

  • @laurenm2123 what'd you think of the s2 Big Little Lies finale? I wasn't sure about this season at the beginning but Meryl Streep's character was just sooooo evil she drew me in! I liked the end a lot.
  • My jams:
    Football- both college and NFL (hubby and I love rival teams so it keeps the fall interesting)
    Reading- I have a bookstagram all about books and tacos, it's been a blast
    TACOS-i could eat them for every meal
    Fishing- we are lucky to live in a state with phenomenal fishing, we especially like ice fishing
    Tim McGraw- I've seen him in concert 12 times... not really digging his new music unfortunately

  • @bluguitarhannah I love West Wing!

  • @chichiphin Yay for animal rights. And I love that you clearly specified NEW YORK. I do have to say Potomac has been AMAZING this season if you get bored.

    @hellobabys YAAASSS to John Mulaney. He’s the guest at my university’s Welcome Back Weekend in October and I can’t wait. Also lol same on Minimalism. Seems awesome, let me google about it on one of my three computers…
