Over supply

Wondering if anyone has any experience/success with decreasing your supply? Originally was told to pump after every feeding and now seem to be over producing. Baby feeds and then I still feel incredibly heavy. Trying to limit pumping to help keep myself comfortable but wondering how to “teach”  my body to produce primarily for baby? My freezer is filling up fast

I don't personally have over supply but I can tell you what friends have done:

Limit pumping just to take the edge off
Use cold compresses to help with discomfort
Block feed: offer only on one side per feed, then offer the other at next feed (this doubles the "time off" for each breast)

You can contact your local La Leche League for more support and ideas.

One other thought is that you could donate milk to your local milk bank while you work on decreasing your supply.

I had this problem with my first. Limiting pumping will help. I also recommend the website kellymom that my Lactation consultant suggested back then. They have some other tips like the cold compresses and using cabbage leaves in moderation.

I had a preemie who was in nicu for 3 weeks so I was exclusively pumping for a while . I was pumping 2-3 times what she was eating and did not want to nurse and pump. These things helped me regulate very quickly:
    - pump only to take the edge off
    - feed only one breast at a time (now she's 50/50 taking one or two at a feed, but for about a week she only took one at a time)
    - mint candies (this was accidental...I was eating a lot of mints while spending so much time at the hospital to keep my throat from being dry. I started regulating quickly after eating so many mints which triggered by memory that mint someone's reduces supply)

I donated a bunch of the excess milk (came home from the nicu with a full-sized cooler full...) on human milk for human babies Facebook group.

Now I'm exclusively nursing and quite comfortable. Haven't used the pump in more than a week.
