High Risk Pregnancy - July Chat

We haven’t had a lot of traction on the weekly High-Risk Check-Ins so we’re going to move to a monthly thread starting this month. Please share any accomplishments, milestones, questions, rants, concerns, and whatever else here! High Risk pregnancies can be scary (this is my 3rd) and we are here to support one another!

Thanks for starting this thread, @pintobean77

We had our anatomy scan on Friday and all looked great. I was so happy to see little boy's face and profile. I've still been referred to a MFM specialist for a higher level scan of his internal organs, especially his heart. They didn't see anything concerning, they just want to be sure because of my own cardiac history. Unfortunately...I also found out today that I failed my early 1 hour glucose test by about 40 points. This wasn't something I was expecting at all. I've never, ever had any glucose issues in the past. I have to go in for the 3 hour test on 7/13 and I am really not looking forward to it... One of my friends mentioned that the glucose parameters changed somewhat recently so more women are failing the 1 hour test and passing the 3 hour test - is this something anyone else has experienced? I'm terrified of getting a GD diagnosis. I eat fairly healthy (the only things I crave are fresh fruits and veggies so I am not sitting around eating junk all day) and I've actually lost 20 lbs since I got my positive test (and stopped fertility meds), so I don't know what more I can do to help my results (the nurse told me it could very well have nothing to do with diet and just be the way the placenta is processing things, so I'm aware of that...I just don't like feeling so out of control and I am sure some of you can relate). Best wishes to all!

@pintobean77 thanks for starting this thread!
@alwayseloquent. Def sounds like you are doing everything you can do!  I wish I craved fruits and veggies!  Good luck on passing the 3 hour.

As for me, I’m chugging along but per the doc expecting to get admitted to the hospital within the next week.  This is for cervical issues.   Waiting to hear from my doc - usually he’s very responsive so it’s a bit strange not to hear from and be waiting.

@alwayseloquent I think it can be fairly common to fail the 1-hr test. I failed with my last two pregnancies but passed the 3-hr with flying colors. Hoping your ultrasound and 3-hr test go well :)

I was also scheduled for a level 2 ultrasound today. Apparently there were a couple things they couldn’t see well at the Anatomy scan. Dr doesn’t seem concerned about anything though. I get so annoyed that the ultrasound tech can’t tell me something like that. She said baby was super cooperative and she got what she needed and then a week later my Dr said they didn’t get everything they needed and I have to go up to Seattle now. Oh well, that’s life. I have to go up there for a hypertension clinic later this month so hopefully they can work the ultrasound in on the same day, because that is not a fun drive!

He did did tell me today that I will have a repeat c-section between 37 and 38 weeks due to hypertension issues. So I will most likely be delivering toward the end of October.

@natehk Hoping your cervical issues behave themselves and your sweet one stays safe and sound.

I had an ectopic pregnancy in January and had a right tube removal and then we got pregnant in March after getting the go ahead from Obgyn to start again in February after first real cycle had passed.  We were one of the lucky ones bc it didn't take long at all.

Well husband deployed shortly after we got the first heartbeat scan and it's been me and the kiddos since.  Fast forward to week 14 where I was so excited to have no more morning sickness and felt fairly normal! Then I started having very mild bright red bleeding so I took the kids over to the neighbors house so I could go get checked out.  While at the ER I started bleeding more and more and then I was passing blood clots and a lot of them.  I was scared and this was technically my 4th pregnancy so I was prepared for the worst.  I got wheeled to ultrasound and right away you could tell the technician was confused and he then turned the heartbeat on for a second and to my surprise baby was perfectly fine! Strong heartbeat and all.  So then the confusion was where was all this bleeding coming from?! So I was kept overnight for observation bc I was still having major bleeding to the point I almost passed out so they were concerned i would need a blood transfusion.  Luckily I never needed it bc the bleed became controlled while on bed rest for monitoring.

It turns out I have a perigestational hematoma or  a subchorionic Hemorrhage (sch) which is a blood clot  that has formed between the uterus and the gestational sac and the placenta if it's low lying.  Mine is located near the cervix so the bleeding continues unless my body reabsorbs the hematoma.  The good thing is the marginal placenta previa that I did have in the beginning has grown away and now I'm just patiently waiting for the hematoma to heal and go away.  We had hoped it would by 20 weeks but here we are going on 21 weeks and it's still there.  But the active bleeding has decreased substantially and now I'm just dealing with the brown discharge which appears to be old blood.  I have had 2 more major bleeds since the first time but both were able to be controlled and I was able to go home.  If for some reason it still hasn't gone away by 24 weeks and I continue to have more bleeds they start admitting me in preparation for delivery of baby.  That's a scary thought but they have to make sure I'm good to go bc if I'm not then I'll have to deliver early.

We are just taking it one day at a time and praying the hematoma goes away.  It's always stressful when you bleed during pregnancy so I try not to think about it and relax as much as possible.

@ladyliv06 Sounds like you’ve had quite the pregnancy adventure so far. There is nothing more stressful in pregnancy than bleeding! So glad they were able to find the source of yours and your little person is safe and sound. Hoping that the pesky bleed goes away and you have an uneventful second half!

@ladyliv06 how scary!  I'm so glad the bleeding so far has been controlled, and hoping for you that it goes away by week 24 so you don't have to go to the hospital!

@ladyliv06 I am so sorry you had such a scare! I am a FTM and I had a SCH as well but at 7 weeks. I had no clue what was going on and I was so sure I lost the pregnancy, but mine resolved after I had a stat visit to my fertility clinic. There is nothing like seeing that little flicker of a heartbeat for reassurance. Fingers crossed and sending you good vibes.

Thank you @natehk and @pintobean77!  Hopefully everything goes smoothly for us all!

I’m high risk primarily for my history of epilepsy (last seizure was 10 years ago but it’s controlled daily by medicine I take). I’m also overweight (size 14/16 but only 5’1). I lost weight during the first trimester and have gained a total of 2 pounds so far - I’m 22 weeks. I had a very small SCH at 8 weeks with one bleed, but then resolved itself by 13 week ultrasound. I did genetic testing which came back as normal! The great news is that I had my 20 week ultrasound and little girl looked perfect, was growing right on track and placenta/cervix looked good. I’m so relieved but I’m also still paranoid as a FTM. I had one chemical pregnancy before this last year and it took us 10 months to get pregnant with this baby! We did get an at home doppler which I use from time to time to reassure myself she is okay and that has helped my anxiety about losing her or something bad happening. My only second trimester symptom is crazy heartburn, so I’ve given up spicy and greasy foods altogether (not worth it, bye pizza lol).
Glad to hear everyone on this thread is doing well so far! 💗

@annieinwonderland glad to hear your anatomy scan went well!  I’m a FTM and we worked hard to get here too so I can totally relate.  I try to focus on getting to each week as a milestone - 22 wks is an accomplishment!

As for me, as expected I am checking into the hospital this Sunday, right at 24 wks.  Cerclage still holding and funneling hasn’t gotten worse.  But doc thinks the best chance for me to make it past 30 wks is with hospital bedrest.  They’ll also give me mag sulfate to soften uterus and steroids to help the baby develop faster in case he is a preemie.
So I’m trying to enjoy the last few days at home!  Mostly I’m ok, but I do get emotional about it at times

@annieinwonderland Glad your testing came back normal and your sweet girl is healthy. Hoping for and uneventful rest of pregnancy!

@natehk Wow. Hospital bed rest does not sound fun but glad that they have a plan to keep your little sweetheart in place!

@ladyliv06 How are you holding up? Hope things are going well with your bleeding issues.

@natehk I will be thinking of you! Are you bringing anything to the hospital to keep you distracted? Will your partner or support system be there too? Hoping your little one stays in there for as long as possible!

    Thanks @annieinwonderland and @pintobean77
Yes I’m really fortunate - my husband will be back and forth to the hospital as much as he can and spend some nights too.  My parents are coming next week and my mom will stay for a bit.  I was told to not be shy and tell people to come - so I’m telling local friends and other family I welcome visitors anytime!
i have a list of different projects I can work on, books to read, Will binge tv shows, etc.
the most difficult part is not being able to do things for myself and especially for our new baby.  I hate being so dependent.  My husband will have to put together the nursery, I can’t have a baby shower, etc.  I know in the long run I wont even remember this stuff once LO is here but it’s still hard...

@natehk am thinking of you and hope your first few days are going well!  Keep us posted, of course

    @natehk hope all goes well!!!

We met with the pediatric cardiologist and MFM specialist for the level 2 ultrasound today and it all went really well. Baby was stubborn and wouldn't give us a perfect view but everyone got what they needed. He was head down and facing my back (where the placenta is), but he was not afraid to squirm and kick - he definitely was not a fan of the 1 hour ultrasound! I do have to go back again in 5 weeks to get another look at his heart, but there aren't any concerns right now. They did my first cervical check and that looked great too (definitely the first time I was ever complimented on my cervix lol). I had my 3 hour glucose test on Saturday and I heard back this morning...I passed!!! The test was awful...I got stuck 4 times in the same arm and the sugar crash afterwards made me pass out for 5.5 hours. I was wiped because I hardly ever eat sugar. My MFM mentioned I may need another 3 hour recheck later in my pregnancy, but I really hope not.

Upcoming appointments: I have my own cardiac echo on Friday, a follow up with my OB next week (then we close on our new house the following Tuesday!). August will have more hematologist appointments, another pediatric cardiologist visit, I'm sure more OB appointments, and we are also doing our hospitak tour and starting our run of birthing, newborn, and labor management classes.

    Best wishes everyone!

@alwayseloquent What awesome updates! So glad that everything looked good on your ultrasound and a huge “Yay!” on passing your 3-hr test! Lol at the “cervical compliment.” That’s pretty funny...and flattering, I guess? 🤣

My level 2 is next Thursday. They are trying to get a better view of his heart and where the cord is attached to the placenta. My placenta is posterior so the first tech was having a hard time
seeing around baby. Hopefully they see what they need this time around. My MFM is 2 hours away in Seattle at UW. And that is a looong drive with traffic! Don’t want to drive that any more than I have to...

Thanks @pintobean77 ! I laughed my butt off when they complimented my cervix; it was definitely not something I was expecting lol

Best wishes for your ultrasound! I hope your little one cooperates better than mine did and you don't  have to go back again (our drive is an hour to our specialist...I definitely don't envy your 2 hour commute!). Our little guy was having none of it. I'm pretty sure he's already got his daddy's attitude lol.

Hi everyone, I'm 21 weeks today with b/g twins. Our NIPT test came back postibe for trisomy 21 so we were referred to MFM. The first scan with them they noticed issues with baby boy's heart. So we have been with them ever since. We have had two scans with them and see a pediatric cardiologist in a few weeks. Otherwise, everything seems to be progressing well. Just nerve wrecking to know my baby boy may have heart issues and DS, but it is in God's hands. My husband is also in the stage IV cancer fight which returned in April after being cleared in December, so we have a lot going on but taking each day at the time. Best wishes to everyone on their journey.

    @alwayseloquent

Hi there!  Just sending you some love.  I had GD with my daughter 4 years ago and got an early diagnosis this time around with my son (still crazy to say son!) at 14 weeks.  I failed the one hour test with flying colors, so much so that they let me opt out of the 3 hour and just gave me the big, fat diagnosis.  With my daughter it was totally diet controlled, this time I am on insulin before bed each night.

I'm here to say a few things.  1) You're doing a great job.  Way to go with your healthy eating!  That will definitely help whether you are diagnosed or not.  2) You didn't do anything to cause it, and if you are diagnosed you can't do anything to fix it, only follow the treatment plan your doctor gives which is sounds like you are already doing. 3) It's not terrible if you are diagnosed, and I am here to help if that happens!  I would love to trade recipes, commiserate, etc.  Your healthy habits will be enough to keep your sugar down if you get to that point.

I was super hard on myself after my diagnosis with my daughter because I felt like I should've been healthier in some way to prevent it.  Unfortunately, some of us just make extra sweet babies and there is nothing we can do about it.  I'm crossing my fingers and toes that your 3 hour goes well!  All the love to you!

    Hi everyone!

Just had a checkup with my OB. Baby boy was active and his heart rate was 150. I'm measuring about 1.5cm ahead and the doctor seemed pleased with everyone. He wants to see me every 2 weeks from here on out. I have another check up in two weeks, then two weeks after that I have to do another hour glucose retest even though I passed the 3 hour test. I have to schedule an appointment with a hematologist who has privileges at the hospital where I am giving birth because my current doctor's practice was bought out by another group. We have a follow up with the pediatric cardiologist on 8/19 so he can get a second look at the baby's heart just to make sure everything is okay. My office is willing to set me up to work from home because they know everything I've been through and my health history - they'd rather give me whatever I need/want than lose me to being put on disability. My doctor said he'd put me on leave today if I wanted, but I told him I am going to try to stick it out until we get into our new house next week and I can get time home office set up. The stress of everything is taking its toll on my body and anxiety. I think taking the stress out of commuting and dealing with office dynamics and schedules will go a long way toward making this easier on me, the baby, and how the next few months of pregnancy go.

Thank you @amyjay23 - you are so sweet! I did pass (yay!), but I just had a checkup with my OB and he said I have to repeat another 1 hour test since my first 1 hour was so early in my pregnancy... I was not thrilled. He seems hopeful though because I passed every single one of the 4 tests for the 3 hour test. Fingers crossed!

@phenomenalbabyd that sounds like so much to handle and I am sending a ton of good vibes your way. <3
