Retina tear and pregnant

Has anyone has a torn retina while pregnant? Did you have laser surgery to correct it? My doctor suspects I have a torn retina and is sending me to a specialist. To complicate things, I'm 7w4d pregnant. My dr said because I'm pregnant I may not be able to have the surgery.  Obviously I'm waiting to talk to the specialist but was wondering if this has happened to anyone else. Thank you.

Re: Retina tear and pregnant

  • elective surgeries should be avoided while pregnant. When surgery is required, the obstetrical team should be involved, and local anaesthetic is favoured over general anaesthesia.  There are few retinal tears that are superficial enough that they do not require medical treatment. These tears practically heal themselves, posing no danger to your health or vision. Consult opthalmologist. Special precautions need to be taken during the delivery time. It's not going to harm your child.

  • It's understandable to feel concerned about your situation, especially being pregnant. While I can't provide personal experiences, many women have faced similar challenges with retinal issues during pregnancy. It's crucial that you consult the specialist for tailored advice regarding your condition and potential treatments. They will consider both your health and the pregnancy when discussing options like laser surgery.

In the meantime, keep an open line of communication with both your doctor and specialist; they are there to help you navigate this safely. Seeking support from others who have experienced this might also provide some reassurance as you wait for more information. You're taking the right steps by reaching out for guidance—stay positive, and prioritize your health! :)
