Since there are a few of us on here, I thought I'd go ahead and start a thread to discuss teacher related things.

What do you teach?

How are you coping with symptoms in front of your students? How the heck do you get to the bathroom?

Any funny stories?

Have you told your boss yet? Coworkers?

Are you/how are you going to tell your kids?

What are your plans for the fall?

Re: Teacher Thread

  • What do you teach? 2nd grade

How are you coping with symptoms in front of your students? How the heck do you get to the bathroom? Thankfully the nausea doesn't hit me until I get home and my teammates are really good about watching my class while I run to the bathroom.

Any funny stories? A few weeks ago, one of my students told another student that I looked pregnant (I was wearing a maxi dress) and I told her if she had nothing nice to say, to not say anything at all :p

Have you told your boss yet? Coworkers? I've told my boss and I'm planning to announce to my coworkers at the end of this week after my appt. I'm planning to bring in donuts and write on the inside "Eat up! My mommy doesn't want to be the only one with a belly. <3 Baby W"

Are you/how are you going to tell your kids? I'm going to read a book called "Our Teacher's Having a Baby" and let them make connections and then I'll make my connection ;) I did the same thing with my class 5 years ago when I was pregnant with my first.

What are your plans for the fall? Hoping to take my 8 weeks paid (to use up my sick days) and then I'll take the last 4 weeks unpaid and come back at the start of February. I've already secured my long term sub.
  • I noticed a lot of us are teachers!

What do you teach? This year I am half 4th grade and half resource(what special ed is called here,) after the summer until I go out I will be 2nd grade which I'm super excited about!

How are you coping with symptoms in front of your students? How the heck do you get to the bathroom? I've been lucky...fatigue has been my biggest symptom. Eating constantly to ward off the nausea. Although I feel bad because I feel like my patience hasn't been great lately with them! Also lucky because my classroom is the closest to the staff room for bathroom breaks:)

Have you told your boss yet? Coworkers? Only my husband, sister, mom and boss know so far:)

Are you/how are you going to tell your kids? Not sure yet!

What are your plans for the fall? 2nd grade until I am done work. Hoping to work for as long as I can:) I'm fortunate that we get a year of mat leave in Canada so I'll go back fall 2020.

  • @rae605 Not a teacher and obviously lurking, but question - in Canada is your year of mat leave paid? Fully or partially? And who pays it, your employer or is it a government fund? Just curious!!

How are you coping with symptoms in front of your students? How the heck do you get to the bathroom? Yeah my students are already 85% sure I’m pregnant. I used to play with them at recess and I just don’t have the energy to anymore, and I’ve been told I’m extra moody lately. My teammate has a student teacher, so if I need a restroom break I just text her and she comes down to let me go. It’s a good system so far!

Any funny stories? Walking out to recess one day, I heard a couple of my students talking about asking me to swing with them. They came to the conclusion that I’m pregnant because “it all just adds up!”

Have you told your boss yet? Coworkers? My team knows and I told my boss already. My team knew right away, because I wasn’t sure how/when morning sickness would affect me. Luckily I haven’t had problems with that yet. I told my boss a week ago because of requesting time off for appointments. I have seriously amazing attendance, so I knew it would be noticeable all of a sudden.

Are you/how are you going to tell your kids? I plan to tell them in May before the school year ends. We talked about setting goals in the beginning of the school year, and one of my goals was to start a family. So I think I’ll announce when we review our goals for the school year.

What are your plans for the fall? I have a student teacher! So she will be with my long term sub the whole time I’m out. Once I have an official due date, I’ll start planning my maternity leave. But I’m pretty sure I’ll start the week of thanksgiving and be off until after Christmas break.
  • @millpe I am also lurking but as a fellow Canadian I can answer your question :)

we can chose between 12-18 months of maternity leave.
The 12 month maternity leave is 55% of your income bi weekly and is paid thru our government.
The 18 month maternity leave is 33% of your income bi weekly.

Some companies will offer a top up of the 45% difference that you are losing while off on maternity leave, one of them is (in BC) VIHA which is the Vancouver Island Health Authority.

  • What do you teach? Kindergarten

How are you coping with symptoms in front of your students? How the heck do you get to the bathroom? Luckily I make it each break to the bathroom and I’m fine. Once I had to call my site secretary to cover because I couldn’t hold it. Otherwise I’ve been lucky symptom free during the day, fatigue sets in around 4pm.

Any funny stories? Well today my son (also Kinder in another class) told every Kinder during lunch, so they came into class FULL of questions and super cute comments. My favorite “when do you lay your egg?” Another student responds “ugh she’s not an oviparous animal!! REMEMBER”

Have you told your boss yet? Coworkers? I told my team first at about 9weeks. Then I told my principal (she was excited). I announced on social media on Easter so everyone kind so spread the news and it’s becoming physically pretty obvious.

Are you/how are you going to tell your kids? Well luckily I don’t have to. I’m anxious what parents will say tomorrow morning lol.

What are your plans for the fall? I plan to work as long as possible. We get 12 weeks off. We get a sub differential and thank goodness I opted into the American Fidelity disability insurance when I was hired because they will also pay me during my leave. As far as my LTS I haven’t secured one. I hope to do so this summer and just pray it’s someone I can really get along with and trust.
  • What do you teach?
    3rd grade

How are you coping with symptoms in front of your students? How the heck do you get to the bathroom?
I let them know when I’m nauseous lol. Bathroom?? Ugh! We are state testing this week and I do not have a break from 8:30-12:20! I have had to call various teachers in the building to come relieve me. 😂

    Any funny stories?
    not yet

Have you told your boss yet? Coworkers?
    yes

Are you/how are you going to tell your kids?
I did! I had to—showing already. We played hangman and it said Guess Who’s Having a Baby?? It took them a good five minutes to guess me lol.

What are your plans for the fall?
I will teach until baby comes and then take 12 weeks. My mom will watch the baby until summer.
  • So great to see so many teachers here!

What do you teach?  Physics at a community college

How are you coping with symptoms in front of your students? How the heck do you get to the bathroom? Fortunately, we have a break an hour into class.  So far it hasn't been too bad.  The hardest was when I needed to get subs for two weeks and I think my students all thought I was dying ... I really don't ever miss class!

Any funny stories?  Hmm ... not yet.

Have you told your boss yet? Coworkers?  Yes, I kind of had to.  I had bleeding and a big scare for a couple weeks that put me on modified bed rest, and needed to get subs.  It would have been really weird for me to do that without explaining to the folks who were directly involved.

Are you/how are you going to tell your kids?  Not sure yet.  I don't know if I'll be showing by the time the spring semester is out (second week of June).  If so, they'll probably start to guess and I'll say something.  If not, that's OK too.

What are your plans for the fall?  I'm hoping to teach through the beginning of November, then get a sub for the rest of the fall semester.  I'm planning to take the spring semester off and return to the classroom in Fall 2020.
  • What do you teach? Kindergarten

How are you coping with symptoms in front of your students? How the heck do you get to the bathroom?

umm not very well, especially the mood swings. One little thing will set me off! Thankfully while I’ve had nausea, I haven’t thrown up. Also I’m in an inclusion room so I’m lucky to have an aide, intervention specialist or tutor most of the day so I can run to the bathroom.

Any funny stories? My kids keep asking if I’m “hangry” because I’m eating more and cranky 😂

Have you told your boss yet? Coworkers?

I told my boss because she signed me up for restraint training and my doctor said no. A few coworkers know because they’re basically my best friends. (And the one is 7 months pregnant so we’ll actually hopefully share a maternity leave sub)

Are you/how are you going to tell your kids?
I probably won’t. I’ll won’t be too far along before the year is over and if something happens they’re too little to understand. I’ll obviously tell my class next year.

What are your plans for the fall?
    teach until I pop!
  • What do you teach? Future occupational therapists at a private college in austin, TX

How are you coping with symptoms in front of your students? How the heck do you get to the bathroom? luckily I have lab assistants and they are adults (most of the time) so I can just leave to pee.

Any funny stories? I sort of non-chalantly mentioned I was pregnant to one group of students during fieldwork. Then when I saw many of them at a professional conference and they asked to buy me a drink...I’m no for multiple reasons but mostly cause I’m pregnant!

Have you told your boss yet? Coworkers? Yep, everyone knows.

What are your plans for the fall? Work up until I deliver. Take off until we return in January.

  • What do you teach?

Sociology, currently adjuncting at a University and I am on the job market for a post-doc or tenure track position.

How are you coping with symptoms in front of your students? How the heck do you get to the bathroom?

Bathroom breaks aren't an issue in college teaching. I have been very low energy which has been a challenge as has the nausea, but you just push through.

    Any funny stories?

Not so far. Last time around I almost fainted while teaching which wasn't funny but it was eventful.

Have you told your boss yet? Coworkers?

Had to tell my department head when we talked about the schedule for next year..

Are you/how are you going to tell your kids?

Won't.  Might tell my summer II class as I will be showing or students that inquire about my teaching in the fall.

What are your plans for the fall?

Won't be able to teach. I would have to find another adjunct to split the quarter with and it would be a lot of difficulty for the department.  I will focus on job applications during that period as that is when the tenure track openings for 2020-2021 will be posted. I will teach summer II which ends at the beginning if September.

I might see if a different local college needs an instructor for an online course in the fall. We could use the funds but I have concerns about juggling obligations after the baby comes. I am already sad about going back so quickly in January.
  • @drama_llama good luck with the job search!  I know how hard that can be (I teach at a community college).

  • What do you teach?  Kindergarten

How are you coping with symptoms in front of your students? I always bring a morning snack because I get so hungry... and HANGRY  :p

How the heck do you get to the bathroom? We have a bathroom in the classroom... BUT it doesn't lock... so I go QUICK! lol

    Any funny stories? None....yet

Have you told your boss yet? Coworkers? My Team and Principal know because this time around we had to go through IVF so I was taking quite a few days off this year for Transfers and Dr. Appts.

Are you/how are you going to tell your kids?  I think I am going to wait until my next Appt (14 weeks) before I let my students know. I saw this cute mystery code where the kids have to put the letters by the number given and then it will spell out "My teacher is having a baby".. of course I teach Kindergarten... so I'll basically be reading it to them.. but it's an easy enough activity for them to do on their own.

What are your plans for the fall? I plan on taking the full 12 weeks since I have 60 sick days... so that looks like I'll be going back right around Valentine's Day if all goes to plan  :p

  • State testing is over!! 🙌🏻
  • @gapmom2019 ours is this week :(
  • rae605rae605 member
I'm assuming state testing is similar to provincial assessments in Canada...in that case, ours start in two weeks! Looking forward to them being finished with!

Little late to the party. TBH was feeling a little insecure about my “teacher” status since I teach pre-k at a preschool. And a lot of people think of that as glorified babysitting. Anyway, here it is...

    What do you teach? Pre-k

How are you coping with symptoms in front of your students? How the heck do you get to the bathroom? We have a strict 10:1 ratio so I have to call the office to have someone come into the classroom before I can leave to go to the bathroom. Thankfully I haven’t had any morning sickness to contend with.

Any funny stories? Before I told anyone yet I was eating a lot of snacks at outside time. One of my students came up and asked why I am eating ALWAYS.

Have you told your boss yet? Coworkers? Yes, had to tell them so I could get my time off for Drs appts approved. Just told my coworkers last week. Between bloat and actual bump I look further along than I am.

Are you/how are you going to tell your kids? I explained to my kids that I have been more cranky recently bc I am tired bc I am going to have a baby. And I need their help to not feel cranky, so they need to stop yelling out during circle time.

What are your plans for the fall? I will take 6 weeks off. But after winter break will be back full time. My admin worked to get a spot for my baby in our baby room starting in Jan.
  • @kmb412 respect!  You are the most important kind of teacher, and as a college prof I have (a) no idea how you manage to do it and (b) seriously huge respect for the formative experiences you give to the little ones.  Only six weeks off sounds rough, but if you have a spot in the baby room that's great!  I still have no idea what I'm going to do about child care when I need to go back.  Honestly the prospect of finding a good care provider is really daunting.
  • @kmb412 As a parent of a preschooler, I can 100% say you have an amazingly important job! Thank you for all that you do :)
  • kmb412kmb412 member
@mimigarden and @rawa1416 you ladies made me cry! Thanks for the support.

And mimigarden, my total time off will actually be closer to 8 weeks off because of winter break now that I do that math. Still not ideal, but at least my bean will just be down the hall at work 🤷🏻‍♀️ Do what we gotta do!
  • Checking in ladies! How many days do you have left? We're at 6 (not including today)!!!
  • rae605rae605 member
27 more days here until summer break...I think I can, I think I can!
  • 5 more days!! Would be 2 if we didn’t have snow days.

Two funny quotes from my third graders today...

”why is your belly so big if your baby is so small?” (After telling them it was the size of a jalapeño this week).

“I didn’t know you could be that old and have a baby.” (I’m 41 😂)

  • mamaeemamaee member
16 more days! These last days are flying by! I’m not sure my Kindergarteners realize we are almost done even though we’re doing an ABC countdown.
  • mamaeemamaee member
@gapmom2019 My own kid has asked me the belly question!

My K’s just think they need to be so quiet for the baby. This is something they came up with on their own lol.
  • @mamaee what a dream!
  • What do you teach- environmental science

Symptoms - I just constantly eat in class and run to the bathroom during class changes.

I told my boss early on bc I was scared I would be late to work from morning sickness.

My students are highschoolers so they connected the dots a few days ago of eating all the time and starting to wear looser clothing.

I will work as long as I can into November and then I am taking the rest of the year off.  It is unpaid but I will still have a job there in August 2020.

  • rae605rae605 member
Anyone else not on summer break yet? Eight more school days here and I can't wait!!! I am so ready.
  • @rae605 I just finished up this week!!  Yay for break!!!  (Though I'm now *taking* a summer class, to learn how to teach online, haha.)

Hope you're on break now too and enjoying some down time!
  • What do you teach? I am the Lead Teacher/Coordinator of an Alternative High School.

How are you coping with symptoms in front of your students? How the heck do you get to the bathroom?  I am very lucky, because in my position I have two instructional assistants so I have a lot of flexbility with leaving the room.  I am feeling the pain for you guys who are trapped!

Any funny stories?  One of my high school students kept feeling my belly during a fire drill.  This was when I was only 15 weeks pregnant.  I finally said to her, "You know, that's mostly just my stomach you're feeling at this point." We both started cracking up.  The beauty of my job is I get to know my students really well so luckily it wasn't as awkward as it could have been.

Have you told your boss yet? Coworkers? Yes!  Everyone knows.

Are you/how are you going to tell your kids? I kind of let the information come out naturally when it made sense.  No big announcement.

What are your plans for the fall?  I'll work up until the baby is born.  My due date is 11/11.  I plan to take off until February 1st.  Thank goodness I got some tips from other moms, because my school offers short-term disability that maternity leave qualifies for through aflac. I set that up, but other than that I have to take all of my PTO, then the rest is unpaid.  I could go on for years about how unfair I think unpaid maternity leave is but I won't get on my soap box here.  Just thankful I was able to work it out a bit!
