IF Testing and Treatment w/o 4/22

This is a place for those of us who have already started TTC, but have started infertility testing and/or treatments. You can express your thoughts, feelings, and frustrations on infertility. TTC can be a long journey naturally, then add in the difficulties associated with infertility, and it becomes a whole new ball game. The road to infertility can be lonely, frustrating, and complicated, so let's make this a place where we can vent, ask questions, and support one another. Feel free to resurrect this thread at any point in the week if you have something to say. Treat this as an ongoing conversation.

  • @lcking82 that's good that you have a plan you feel comfortable with because it's so easy to get overwhelmed.

Diagnosis (if you've been):  PCOS, Annovulatory, AMA

Status (WTO/TWW/TTA): benched until FET in a month

What are you doing this cycle? (Testing? Treatment?): recovering from my surgery for now

How are things going?: Better than they were last week!  I just had my post-op F/U and it went pretty well.  She wants me to still just relax because there is a high risk of the right ovary twisting again.  I also have some pretty bad bruising and a horrible rash on my stomach so we are going to monitor that as well.  I got to see some picture from the surgery and my ovary was huge and not looking that great before they untwisted it so I am extremely grateful we got to it in time.  She also went over my embryology report and she was very happy with the results.  We currently have 6 frozen awaiting genetic results and they all look really good!!!!!

    Any questions?:

GTKY: in honor of infertility awareness week, how have you helped someone else understand what you are going through with IF?  Both of my sisters are very supportive but not experienced with IF so I have had to explain all my tests and procedures and struggles.  I'm very fortunate that they have been so interested and allowed me to vent when needed.

    DX: PCOS, anovulatory, AMA
    Femara X3: no response
Clomid X3: BFN (cyst and thin lining)
    IUI (Dec '18) MMC
    IVF (April '19) 9 retrieved, 7 fertilized, 2 normal PGT-A
    FET 06/12/19 - BFP! EDD 02/27/20

  • Diagnosis (if you've been): Unexplained primary infertility, now unexplained secondary infertility

    Status (WTO/TWW/TTA): WTO

What are you doing this cycle? (Testing? Treatment?): We're gearing up for a likely egg retrieval IVF cycle in May so all the testing is this month. I just had AFC/AMH/FSH/LH which were a mixed bag (AMH not great but others good), and sonohysterogram is tomorrow. DH will also have his SA and labs this week.

How are things going?: Nervous about going through this again. I didn't have that bad of an experience at all with stims before but the retrieval and recovery were painful, and I'm now 3 years older and a lot more tired.

Any questions?: This time we're having PGS which is new - anyone know the turnaround time after retrieval? Assuming we get anything to biopsy *fingers crossed*

GTKY: in honor of infertility awareness week, how have you helped someone else understand what you are going through with IF? I don't think I've done a good job with this. My super fertile friends are always like "Just do IVF!" and I don't have the emotional energy to explain what it's like to them. Boards are the best for this!
  • @lcking82 I'm really sorry to hear that you're struggling. I'm glad that you and your doctor were able to work out a plan and that you're feeling better after the weekend <3

@celticknotfire that's great that your sisters have been so great through all this! I am glad to hear that the f/u went well and everything looks relatively good. Sounds scary about the potential torsion - hope you are able to do lots of relaxing, fun things until the risk is gone! Yay for 6 embabies!!!

    Diagnosis (if you've been):  PCOS

Status (WTO/TWW/TTA):  WTO, I guess. I am generally anovulatory.

What are you doing this cycle? (Testing? Treatment?) I see the doctor on Friday to discuss next steps. I’m taking Metformin now and working on weight loss.

How are things going?:  They aren’t really, but I am losing weight, so that’s something.

    Any questions?:  No

GTKY: in honor of infertility awareness week, how have you helped someone else understand what you are going through with IF?  I have put a post about it on FB before and intend to today as well. I also talk about PCOS frequently. I know a lot of other women who have it. I’ve also explained it to a lot of my friends who seem to be super fertile. It’s hard, though. I feel like everyone knows someone with fertility issues who didn’t really need the meds or who just adopted, etc. It can be really frustrating.

  • I took some time off from the bump, but I'm back..

@lcking82 I totally get how you're feeling. I'm glad you can take a step back! Are you still liking the letrozole?
@ruby696 I'm glad the TWW is going fast it's the worst part for me
@kobrien827 I'm all about the old wives tales! Anything to make me feel like I can make the slightest difference.
@mercury94 how old were you when you got diagnosed with PCOS?

Diagnosis (if you've been): ovulation dysfunction (who knows if that's HA or PCOS according to my RE it doesn't matter)

Status (WTO/TWW/TTA): WTO on my own.. we'll see if that happens I did 2 cycles of letrozole with very short LPs

What are you doing this cycle? (Testing? Treatment?): Nothing. Going for an HSG tomorrow.

How are things going?: Things suck. I had my first appt with the RE who said based on my hormones I look normal, yet I'm not ovulating and he can't say if I had HA and am recovering, or if I am borderline of certain subset of PCOS but it doesn't matter either way because it's going to be treated the same based on my body's results. I wanted a firm diagnosis, but I know I'm not going to get it. RE is having us to HSG and SA and then wants to try clomid + hcg trigger with monitoring. I liked letrozole and am scared to try clomid. I'm hoping my body will O on it's own this month after two medicated cycles.

    Any questions?:

GTKY: in honor of infertility awareness week, how have you helped someone else understand what you are going through with IF? I actually only talk to my only IF friend about our issues. Nobody else really knows.

  • @flinstone-2 I was officially diagnosed with PCOS at age 30, but had been told it was likely when I was about 27 and TTC with my ex. At that time, I was just told that I was anovulatory and would need additional testing for the underlying cause.

    Status (WTO/TWW/TTA): benched

What are you doing this cycle? (Testing? Treatment?): I got my cd3 blooddraw on Saturday. I'm a little stressed out about it being the right day since I spot a bunch before af, and it's not clear to me what is indeed cd1. The re receptionist said that only a "flow" counted as cd1, so I think I did get my blood draw on my cd3. (Which was a pain since we were away at the ILs this weekend. Thankfully LabCorp is everywhere.) I think the results are getting sent to both my re and to me, so I'm sure I'll be googling the numbers to see what they mean. Next up, I have a stp next Tuesday and then an endometrial biopsy May 8.

How are things going?: I'm stressed, as usual. MH and I keep having fights, but at least we keep reconciling. It's just been tough on both of us. Plus, he's still not sure if he's going through with a SA. Religiously, he opposed to masturbation, so we're waiting to hear back if he can poke a hole in the collection condom. I'm trying my best to be patient with him, but in all honesty, I'm frustrated that he feels the need to tamper with the sample/results. And he's well aware of my frustration. So there we are.

Any questions?: Are there any good sites you'd recommend for helping me to analyze the cd3 bloodwork results? And can you see progesterone issues with cd3 bloodwork, or does that need to be collected later in a cycle to see issues?
I'm also a bit confused about the range for when I can get my endometrial biopsy done. The paperwork said between cd20-cd24, but I've ovulated as late as cd23, so I'm not sure if I need to worry about making sure that it's post-o. I guess that's a question for my RE.

GTKY: in honor of infertility awareness week, how have you helped someone else understand what you are going through with IF? Ugh, I guess I explain how I feel and all the medical/biological stuff to mh, but honestly, I don't want to share. MH wants to tell our parents, but I don't need that sympathy look from my mom and I don't need my ILs blabbing to other people or checking in on how I'm feeling. I feel guilty asking mh to keep quiet about it with our family, but I just think it'd make it worse. Some of my friends know, but I feel like it's a joy-suck, and I don't want people to feel like I can't be excited for their joys when I am failing at ttc.

@lcking82 Sorry to hear that you've been feeling more down about things lately, but glad that your plan to scale back and your chats with yh are helping.
@celticknotfire Glad to hear that you're recovering and that you got some good results back!
@clover321 Good luck with all the testing!
@b_1029 Glad to hear that your ttc break has allowed for a mental break. I'm curious to see if I'll be wanting a hio break too since we're benched this cycle. Though, mh has decided that we're completely abstaining until after all procedures since he's not morally comfortable with condoms anymore, so I could want to hio just because I can't. Guess we'll see. And, sorry your mom doesn't say the right things. I can totally picture someone trying the upbeat approach on me and it pissing me off. Some days I'm more optimistic than others, so I just can't trust that anyone would say the right thing since the right thing changes based on my mood that day.
@kobrien827 Glad to hear you're feeling upbeat. You certainly seem to be doing everything you can! FX!
@ruby696 Sorry to hear that you're feeling that way. This up and down emotional ride is so exhausting, so I'm glad at least the tww is going quickly for you.
@emmasemm Sorry to hear that your uterus has been angry. I hope she chills out soon! Glad you've got a plan all set!
@inthewoods23 I hope it's a good kind of busy this week! Good luck with figuring out exactly just what you want to post.
@mercury94 I hear you on the frustration of trying to explain to other people. I guess I don't really know what kind of response I'd like to get, so I just don't bother sharing too much about it. Good for you for spreading the information out there.
@flinstone-2 Hey, so sorry you're having such a rough time right now. It sounds so frustrating to not have a clear diagnosis. I really hope things feel less suck-y soon.
  • @flinstone-2 welcome back! I’m sorry you are having such a tough time getting diagnosed. Hopefully the clomid works for you.

@mercury94 great job on the weight loss!

@inthewoods23 I believe the shg is the saline sonogram I got. They use a transvaginal ultrasound while putting saline into the uterus to look for an abnormalities. I believe with the hsg they use dye and an X-ray (not 100% on that).

@emmasemm I’m so sorry about your sister and your grandfather. I’m glad you finally have a direction on next steps and Ivf.

@ruby696 I’m keeping my fx regardless. I’m hoping your feelings toward it are wrong.

@kerco925 love all the old wives tales! It certainly doesn’t hurt to try! Fx for beta!

@b_1029 I’m so sorry you have to deal with your mom saying those things. I’m glad you do tell her that it hurts you.

@clover321 ugh the just do Ivf is the worst. They act like it’s just that easy to do it too.

@lcking82 I’m sorry you’re having a difficult time right now. I’m glad you and your dr are on the same page though.

@celticknotfire 6 is fantastic! Glad you’re recovering well from surgery. So scary!

Diagnosis (if you've been): unexplained rpl

    Status (WTO/TWW/TTA): wto

What are you doing this cycle? (Testing? Treatment?): clomid w/monitoring, TI followed by progesterone after confirmed o.

How are things going?: last night was the first dose of clomid and so far so good. A little anxious but trying not to get my hopes up.

Any questions?: My re gave me the clear blue digital to test for o. I was thinking of sticking with my easy@home ones. Any reason not to?

GTKY: in honor of infertility awareness week, how have you helped someone else understand what you are going through with IF? I posted my story on fb this morning. It’s over on the NIAW thread if you’re interested.
  • @clover321 I hate the just do IVF response too!  We are doing PGT-A testing and our doctor said she will have the results in 14 days after the lab receives the samples but it can be as quickly as 7 days.  I imagine it would depend on the lab and where it is located.

@b_1029 I understand and can relate to the zero sex drive!  Enjoy your time not tracking and monitoring.

@kobrien827 I plan on doing all the old wives tales too!  If they don't cause any harm why not do them.  When is your beta?

@ruby696 That's good that the TWW is going by quickly and hopefully you are wrong about this IUI.  Do you have a plan for what next (FX you won't need it)?

@emmasemm I am so sorry you had so much bad news in your family recently.  I use to be a hospice nurse so I know how hard these decision can be on family.  The strength you show with everything you are facing is both admirable and inspirational.  I am really happy you have a plan and something to look forward to.

@inthewoods23 The HSG uses the dye and fluroscopy to check for tube patency and the SHG uses saline and US to essentially check the shape of the uterus.  My RE said they were looking for anything that would effect implantation or any other abnormalities in the internal uterine wall including polyps or adhesions.  The general prep was the same for me and both involve having a catheter placed into the cervix with something injected into the uterus.  Personally I found the SHG more tolerable than the HSG but that could have been because of a blocked tube.  I took some ibuporfen prior to help get the jump on any discomfort or cramping I may have had.

@mercury94 I don't ovulate at all either so I understand the frustrations!  How long have you been on the Metformin for?

@flinstone-2 Welcome back! Did you ovulate on the letrozole?  I know how frustrating it is to not get a firm diagnosis but as long as it doesn't change the treatment I guess it's not knowing anything.  GL with your HSG

  • @celticknotfire I think we'll be done. Certainly we would limit any treatment to clomid and TI, but I'm leaning towards being done. If my egg quality is no good, it's time to move on. My RE wants to do IVF, but we can't afford that, especially since my body barely responds to meds. She told me with the meds I'll need, cost would be around $18k.
  • @celticknotfire I just got back on it in February. Doctor said eight weeks and then we’d move on to next steps, so that’s where I am. I have previously O’d when using Clomid.

  • @begging4abump any spotting (even if it's for a few days) wouldn't count as CD1.

@kbrown2385 @celticknotfire thanks for the SHG info! I've had the HSG through my OB which was not pleasant since they basically had to do it twice when the catheter balloon didn't inflate so they had to use a 2nd one to actually get the dye injected. I cramped for a while that day. My RE was super awesome for one of my IUIs so I bet I won't feel a thing when she does this SHG.

  • celticknotfire  I did O on the letrozole. I was under the care of my OB at the time and on the lowest dose at 2.5mg. I O'd on CD 20 and then CD 22 the second month. Both cycles my LP was short (7 and then 8 days). My progesterone levels are clearly extremely low and my OB did say we could supplement with progesterone if need be, but she then passed me off to the RE who is against P supplementation because he says it's a follicular stage problem and believes the trigger would help support the luteal phase as well as the clomid (vs. the letrozole)

kbrown2385 are you going to use a trigger with your clomid? My RE wants me to do it, but is against the progesterone which annoys me.

  • @flinstone-2 no trigger this round. Just using opk’s to time intercourse. Any particular reason why your dr is against progesterone? Surprisingly mine isn’t, even though I don’t necessarily need it.
  • @flinstone-2 I was on bc starting at 19 until 27 and then again until 30. I was never regular. I actually got on bc after going an entire semester in college without AF. I knew I wasn’t KU unless it was a Virgin Mary situation, so I went to a doctor. It was a GP, though, and she never said infertility or PCOS only that I was irregular. I have not O’d without meds since at least age 19 and never confirmed before that.

  • kbrown2385  i think there are two schools of thought on it... a "good ovulation" will produce a corpus luteum to provide enough progesterone support, so if ovulation has progesterone problems it must be a problem with the "strength of ovulation' or the egg maturation. I really would like progesterone support especially since I've O'd on letrozole without a trigger..
