PAIF New Mommies - April

Congrats to all of the new mommies!! Some of you may join the Facebook group, but anyone who wants to keep in touch on the board can use this thread.

Sounds like several kids are close to taking first steps too!!

Re: PAIF New Mommies - April

  • Abigail is pulling up on everything these days and started walking with her little push walker today. While I’m such a proud mom I feel like she’s growing up way too fast!! She also slowly (very very slowly) starting to try foods other than purées. Not quite eating them yet but at least she’ll put them in her mouth without acting like she’s being poisoned lol!
  • Anne's a pro-cruiser, loves her push walker and  of course, she pulls up on everything. She'll stand independently once she's up for 15-30 seconds at a time.  She JUST started to stand up from a seated position completely unassisted so she's got the strength there. It was funny -- she was sitting in the middle of her play rug playing with a little duck toy and then suddenly she was standing. She's done it a couple times since then. My mom thinks she's ready to walk at any moment and all the other moms in her tots class agree; I'm waiting with bated breath because I'm nervous that she won't ever walk haha. I'm sure I'm just being paranoid; it's just so nerve-wracking waiting for those first steps!

She eats pretty much everything now (that's safe for her to eat). She loves trying new foods but she's rejected a bunch -- beans of any variety seem to be a miss with her. Favorites seem to be any pasta, meats or eggs.

My cookie is pulling up on everything gd bless her! She’s still ready to run and just turned 10 months I’m actually not in a rush for it as she gets into everyyhing already!  I catch her playing with a toy standing and she doesn’t realize she’s not holding on and then plops on the floor!  It’s amazing how far she’s come in just a few weeks.  She finally got two teeth with another on the way, my poor lil thing is hurting so I hope it comes through soon!  I can’t believe she’ll be turning one before we know it....it’s crazy!!!

@cashewchicken huge congrats on bf for a year! Ur a rockstar! I’m hoping these boobs will make it a year for her as well!! Glad you got to enjoy ur sons birthday with everyone! I can’t believe I’m less then 2 months away to celebrate a year, it’s going too fast!!

I learned from his daycare teacher that he stood up unassisted from a seated position while holding toys in both hands. He’s also loving his push walker, he’s practically running with it. Maybe he will take a step soon. I agree @mtpbadger, he’s growing up way too fast. He also seemed to have shot up in height and lost some of the baby chunkiness. Where did the rolls go??😩

@Hopeful_mom thank you! Actually it was easier than I thought. I got lucky with decent supply and I only suffered from clogged ducts a few times, and a really painful one just once. It was difficult initially with tongue ties and sensitive nipples but after a month or so, it was not too bad. Now the tricky thing is how to wean him off. Hoping you’ll make the 1-year mark too! Our babies are definitely growing up way too fast!

  • @cashewchicken and @hopefulmom the thought of weaning makes me a little sad. I was going to stop pumping at work and wean this month (I have enough frozen to get her to a year) but we are going away for a weekend in May right before her first bday and I don’t want to deal with the hassle of trying to keep breastmilk frozen or put her on formula so I decided I’m going to keep going through that trip and then start weaning. I did drop one pump at work and that’s been awesome to have my afternoons free to go on a walk instead. I’ll miss nursing but not the pumping!
  • @mtpbadger I did something similar. We went to Japan a couple of weeks before my son turned 1, so I decided to keep bf. I’m happy I kept bf as my son was fussy during the bus/train rides and bf was the best pacifier. It kept him full, calm and happy. It was especially great when he got a stomach flu/motion sickness or whatever he had that made him unable to keep any food down except for breast milk. The downside is that he is more dependent on my breast than before so weaning is going to be tricky.

  • @mtpbadger I stopped pumping, but kept nursing. I started dropping pumping sessions around 10-11 months. I did it slowly enough, that I was able to produce enough for daycare bottles. At home, I nursed on demand. At about a year, she weaned herself off bottles. She's 19.5 months now and just weaned herself off nursing. You can stop pumping and still nurse if that's what you want.
  • @persnickity your supply stayed okay for nights/weekends and adjusted with no pumping? I’m just worried my supply will tank. I might start dropping the other pump just before our trip so that when we get back I can just be done with the pumping.
  • @mtpbadger I stopped pumping at work about a month or so before the trip. My supply did drop quite a bit. When I first went back to work I used to pump twice a day and also nurse my son when I picked him up from daycare. My breast would be painful if I didn’t pump for 4 hours. By the time I left for the trip, I would go without pumping or nursing for about 12 hours, and my breast wouldn’t even be full then. In hindsight I probably should have kept pumping at least once during work hours as I needed to bf more frequently while on vacation. My supply recovered a bit though with frequent bf and proper hydration.

  • @mtpbadger I slowly dropped each pumping session and took a week to drop it fully. I also dropped the one that produced the least amount first. The total amount i pumped was less, but the amount I got from the other sessions stayed the same. I didn't have any issues nursing. The amount of time and frequency stayed the same as before. The only change i had was a month after I was fully done pumping, her night nursing drastically increased. She was nursing for comfort. Once I got that worked out, there weren't any issues.

I started with 3 sessions at work and very slowly dropped the middle one, then the one, and finally the first one.
  • I can't believe so many babies are turning one! How exciting!

Matthew has another ear infection, so we are on a different antibiotic. On the plus side, he gained a pound in 2 weeks, which is awesome! We started solids this weekend per our nutritionist and he took to them with the same gusto as he did BF the first time. I'm hoping that he will have made good progress when we go back for our recheck next week.
  • @wildrainbow that is great news!! Go Matthew go, keep gaining!! Hopefully the new antibiotic does the trick for the ear infection!
  • @wildrainbow that's awesome he's gaining weight so well!! I bet that has to be reassuring for you
  • @wildrainbow that’s awesome glad he’s doing so well!!

i hate pumping and only do it if I have to for some reason.  She really is always the best pump  :D

we we just got over the stomach flu and it was horrible on everyone! @cashewchicken I am so sorry u had to deal with that being away omg I must’ve went through all of her onsies in 2 days.  Her pooping still isn’t back on track yet.  I’m glad I got it later so I could care for her first, just awful!!!

  • Hey guys, long time no see.  Glad to see everyone doing well!

All this pumping and nursing talk kind of makes me bummed tho about that aspect of our journey.  My baby was so hungry at 3m I had to start combo feeding.  I had been pumping 6-8x daily up to 6m, until coincidentally a coworker was out on vacation which meant I didnt get as many pump breaks in at work.  I am back to trying to pump in the morning, 3x at work, and 1-2x in the evening, but i just get so little.  It's pretty discouraging and not at all how I thought it would go.  🤷‍♀️

I absolutely cherish any MOTN nursing we can do, but most cases she will only briefly nurse each side (hopefully) before she starts crying for a bottle.  It kind of breaks my heart, but maybe it's just my ego.  Around 3m, she had been steadily dropping off the weight charts into the 40s with her other measurements in the high 80s and 90s (even tho her doctor wasn't concerned bc she was gaining enough between weigh-ins, supposedly), and now her weight is back up into the 70s, which I think is probably a healthier curve for her.  It had been so hard to see her popping off after feeding, crying, unsatisfied, instead of passing out milk drunk.

I would so much rather be nursing than bottle feeding, but I also don't see how I could stop pumping without sacrificing what precious little nursing time we still have.  I dont have that much frozen due to not a great supply, but I'm about to thaw one bag (of 16oz sticks) and freeze another.  I would love to have enough to get her to that year, but theres just no way, even if I froze everything I pumped, and then shes just on formula NOW, so that kind of defeats the purpose...

Chalk it up as one more thing about life / TTC/ parenthood we think we know how it's gointo go, and then it doesnt.  I can keep fighting for my own way, or I can play the cards we were dealt.  So I will see what the RE says about TFAS, and I'm trying to have more acceptance that when the time comes to stop pumping, it'll be okay.  I also got AF back right away, so I wonder if that has anything to do with my supply, too, or what.

Anyway, thanks for listening!  Lol  sorry for the DD.  I miss you guys and I'm not on FB.
  • @businesswife it's SO hard when our expectations don't meet up with reality, especially when it's been such a tough road just to get to this point. ANY amount of breastmilk (no matter how little!) is still good for your little one if you want to continue nursing/pumping! I saw this somewhere "Even if your baby isn't getting 100% of your breastmilk, they are getting 100% of the BENEFITS of your milk".
  • @BusinessWife so good to see you again! As for the topic of breastfeeding, the board has gone through cycles. When I first got pregnant, the new moms mostly formula fed. Then there was a mix of both when i delivered. Now it seems to be more people breastfeeding. Either way, everyone on here agrees that fed is best.

I've also seen that everyone seems to struggle emotionally with what to do. No matter what we choose, we all seem to have a lot of emotions wrapped up in the journey. Those who breastfeed feel guilty if they want to stop all together or they want to just pump and feel guilty about that. Those who chose formula struggle with which formula and how much. I've seen for almost everyone, that feeding our babies comes with guilt. But what I love is that this community is always there to support.
  • @BusinessWife Hey! So good to see you! Feeling guilty about all the things comes with motherhood. You are doing an amazing job. She is happy, healthy, and thriving because of you. Whether this means you continue how you are or just going to formula, remeber that YOU are the reason for great she is doing. It's because YOU are there supporting, sacrificing, and loving her. You are her safe zone, not your breast milk, not the formula, YOU and you alone. You are enough, mama. Never forget that. I wish I had the magic formula to make the guilt go away, but I don't. Hugs, mama.

I'm not on FB either, so I'm always here if you need to vent.
  • @wildrainbow @persnickity @mtpbadger Thanks so much, ladies.  ❤  it's sort of funny bc I don't think I really would have considered it mom guilt, but I guess that's exaxtly what it is.  I was just so utterly sold on bf that I didn't really entertain the thought AT ALL that it might not 100% work for us.  So that made it harder.  Similar to her delivery- I planned fully for the vaginal delivery that didn't happen.  and while I tried to prepare by letting go of or working through any fears I might have of a section, I still sooo very badly didn't want that to be me.  Do these things matter in the long run, hopefully not.  But it doesn't help that my brother comes from this leche league 2x homebirth experience- i just feel totally judged so I just try not to say anything.  As much as i would have loved to have had more similar experiences.

My biggest concern with having had surgery really is going for vbac and being able to bring all our babies home!  If by the grace of God we were to be lucky enough to bring home the rest of our take-home embies, 4, 5, 6 sections starts getting progressively less and less desirable.  Or worst case, one goes horribly and the doctor tries to tell me we can't finish transferring them all bc it's too risky.  Maybe those are not the most realistic outcomes, but those are my fears.  Somewhere in there, we need to get our first vbac, and hope that any subsequent deliveries only get easier,  ...as I conversely, grow older.   :s  as wonderful a problem it is to have at all, to have her siblings waiting for us, it just feels like such a cross to bear until we finally bring them all home, and no one has a crystal ball to tell us how it's going to go.
  • @BusinessWife my OB days that vbac would be an option. I ended up with a c-section after my induction stalled due to baby's head size. I think it's going to depend on why you had a c-section and your ob. There are several moms here who've had successful vbacs or successful multiple c-sections. These are all valid concerns though. I can't imagine the weight you carry making decisions for your embies.
  • Anyone else struggling with their periods not regulating? I don't know if it's related to my birth control or my body still regulating from breastfeeding. But I'm having a heavy period every other week right now. It's never been this heavy and often before pregnancy.

@persnickity It took about 6 months to a year for my period to regulate after ds1 was born. More than likely, it's related to regulating after BF. It takes a while for the hormones to get back to normal.

ETA: I didn't get my period back until 11 months PP and it took 6 months to a year for it to regulate. I realized that the above statement wasn't very clear.
  • @persnickity I haven't gotten my period back yet at almost 11 months post partum. Although that was my issue with getting pregnant....no periods. I'm hoping my body sort of "reset" with pregnancy and that as I wean, it'll come back, but I'm not hopeful. I hope yours regulates soon...that sounds like not much fun at all!

  • @mtpbadger @wildrainbow mine came back at about 14.5 months. And then it's been all over the place the last 5 months.
  • Even with formula, I'm finding weaning from bottles comes with its own emotional sadness -- I'm going to miss cuddling my little girl and feeding her a bottle but the doctor wants her on sippy cups only ASAP since she has so many teeth. I'm still doing a morning cuddle and bottle but dropping that is going to be so hard...

Finally got around to going through Anne's clothes and packing away the ones she doesn't fit in anymore. Also took the opportunity to buy some cute short sets for summer on Carter's. And super excited since I found out they're opening one near me this fall! Right now the only Carters store near me is an hour drive away.

I'm finding myself being paranoid that she's not learning to walk/she won't ever walk. My dad and her pediatrician say she's right on track for her age and some kids take up to 15-18 months to walk. She stands alone for extended periods without support, tries to take a step here or there (and tumbles), and she can get up to a standing position from a seated one without support (she's only done this a few times; I think it's still alot of work for her little legs). I just feel so anxious that she's never going to walk!!  Haha, I know I'm crazy, I was the same way about her holding her head up, then crawling, now walking...

  • Ooh!  I have been eyeing up the summer shorts, too!  @mbradfo2  primary had some little bloomer short things I was looking at, but I haven't pulled the trigger on much.  Trying to wait and see what else she's gifted at Easter...
  • @mbradfo2 it's so hard not to worry about those major milestones. My daughter really never rolled over. She did it once and that was it. I was so concerned and the pediatrician didn't seem to care at all. Haha. Anne will get there sooner than you think. My daughter didn't start walking until 13.5 months, if that helps reassure you any.

@byrneme how's potty training? All of a sudden, she's now asking to sit on the toilet. It's not all the time and she doesn't get that she's supposed to pee, but it's been exciting to have her ask.
  • @persnickety S had great head control early on, rolled over once or twice, and then that's it! 🤷‍♀️ she is sitting up strong now, and getting close to crawling - no one's worried about the not rolling too much (some babies it's just not their thing) or that she's not quite crawling yet - mil swears dh never crawled and went right to walking!  Point being babies have their own personalities, likes, and dislikes that can shape their milestones too.  If she's getting around well by crawling she's probably just happy with that for now, (and maybe not frustrated enough to try something new lol)  hang in there, she'll get there eventually just maybe on her own terms. ;)
  • @persnickity
    @BusinessWife
Yeah, I felt the same way about all of her major milestones so far and she reached them when she was ready for them....it's just so hard not to worry about them! And now since she's 1 year as of 2 weeks ago, alot of her spring/summer classes are 12-20 month olds and she's usually the youngest and the only one not walking (but pulling to stand and cruising on everything). She took a few steps by herself yesterday when we were 'touring' the house (she likes to walk  around holding my fingers) and then tumbled. I'm just too impatient!! My dad also keeps reminding me that she was 5 weeks early and she'll get there in her own time. I guess I ought to listen to the experienced 30+ year pediatrician.... >.>

  • @mbradfo2 Don't forget her age is still adjusted, she's only 11 months adjusted and that is super early to be walking. My 35 weeker started walking at 13 months, so 12 adjusted. He never practicing taking steps or anything. Take the time and enjoy the fact she cant run from you yet, I promise, when she can, you will long for the days when she couldn't. I realize that what I said does nothing to help your impatience, but hopefully remembering her adjusted age will keep things in perspective.

Matthew had his 6 monthth appt yesterday. He is on the growth chart chart in the 5th percentile, like I knew he would be. He is following his brother's growth pattern exactly. He weighed 14lbs5oz. We go see his GI Friday, hopefully they are happy with his progress as well. He loves all the food we've been feeding him. I'm hoping he will be a better eater than his brother.
  • @wildrainbow
My sister's first girl has always been a picky eater and she had lots of feeding problems as an infant. And then along comes her younger sister who is a champ eater and devours everything in sight!! So hopefully Matthew will follow that pattern

I'm going to really hate weaning Anne off the morning bottle. I just love cuddling her when she wakes up...

  • @persnickity they are sitting her on the potty after every diaper change at daycare (apparently they DO support this) and she asks to sit on it at home all the time but, like you, she doesn't get it. I caught her in a corner the weekend before last with her poop face on and we got her out of her clothes and onto the potty in time to do her business. We were both super proud. But nothing since then lol.

  • @byrneme our daycare doesn't start until the next room. They will do it if we ask. We're just following her cues right now and casually doing it.

@wildrainbow hope the GI doctor is happy too. Glad to hear he likes eating!
  • Happy Easter! We had an Easter egg hunt yesterday with my niece and daughter who are a year apart. It was hilarious! Hope you're all having fun!
  • We did an Easter Egg hunt...well, my nieces hunted eggs and Anne went through their extras lol She is the baby of the bunch so it's pretty cute. We went through about two weeks of viruses but now she's back to herself with a vengeance and getting pretty close to those first few steps (she will actually take a step herself, then realize it and sorta flail lol).

    How is everyone doing?

We didn’t partake any Easter celebrations but we probably will do the egg hunting next year when he is walking around.

My son took a first step a week ago and has since been walking 3, 4 steps at a time. He is getting more confident by the day so he might start walking in the next couple of weeks!
    Me: 41  DH: 46
Unexplained infertility/AMA, polycystic ovaries, insulin resistance
    FET#1(July 2017): eSET of first of 4 PGS-normal embryos, DS born 3/30/2018
    FET#2(Oct/Nov 2019): eSET
  • @cashewchicken get ready, once he starts walking well, one day he will take off ruining and never stop, lol. You will find that toddler proofing is way different than baby proofing, and much more frustrating.

We are good. Matthew had his recheck with his GI. She was very happy with his progress, so we don't go back for 6 weeks. He has 2 teeth now on the bottom and is a Rollin fiend! He tries to sit up from a reclined position, so that is interesting.

Tomorrow is my birthday and H is taking off work. We are having our first date in almost a year and leaving both kids with a friend. It should be a lot of fun. It's an early date with a matinee movie and an early dinner after, but I'm excited.
  • Happy birthday @wildrainbow hope
unhad a great day! Teeth already wow such a big boy!
@cashewchicken awww walking already walking how exciting!!  Mine is standing and I have a feeling might being taking some steps soon.....

  • Happy belated Birthday @wildrainbow! How was the date?

All these babies are getting so big! @hopeful_mom is your little girl standing on her own? Abigail is pulling herself up on EVERYTHING and walking along the walls/couches/tables; etc holding on. We've tried to get her to stand on her own just to see and she immediately plops down on her butt - she thinks it's a game now and starts laughing hysterically! I can't believe she will be 1 in two weeks - this year has FLOWN BY! I get a little emotional thinking about it!

I know, right? Where did all of that time go?!

    @Hopeful_mom
I remember you worrying about whether she was going to start crawling or not   Just goes to show we worry about everything and nothing!

    @wildrainbow
Happy Birthday!! We just finished up the birthday gauntlet in my family -- we have a ton of birthdays from January to May -- so I'm glad to be past all of the party planning and gift buying! The next birthday is mine so I get to relax a bit lol  My mom usually sets up something for me and gets my husband to pitch in. A book I'm really looking forward to comes out this month so I'm just hoping for a copy of that and a totally free day to read it!
