Tamiflu

I know someone mentioned at some point they were taking Tamiflu, I can't remember who. My 4 year old just tested positive for the flu and is on it. The doctor said that since me and my one year old are considered high risk, we can choose to take it as a prophylactic if we want. What are your thoughts on that? Would you take it as a preventative measure? Or give it to your infant?

Re: Tamiflu

  • @ameliabedelia-2 I would take it, and give it to an infant, rather than risk the flu. The flu shot doesn't cover influenza-A, which is what is going around, and everyone I know who has gotten it has been down for 1-2 weeks. From what I've read, there are more risks to your growing fetus from having the flu, rather than from taking Tamiflu.

  • Lurker***  hey lady. So sorry your kiddo has the flu. right after DD2 was born DH and DD1 both came down with influenza A, DD2 was super sick (hospitalized) but it turned out to be RSV. I took tamiflu as a preventative because I had been exposed and the last thing DD2 needed was influenza on top of the RSV.   I guess it depends on how much you can separate yourself and DS from DD...

  • @ameliabedelia-2 I had no problems with it and neither did DD1 (she was a little under 3 at the time). Thanks lady. its funny after our crazy journeys that we are both doing this again so close together!

  • Considering toddler hygiene habits, the exposure has probably already occurred. I'd probably call my OB just to double check and take it.

I got the flu a few years back and it was so scary. Thank God I wasn't pregnant and could control my fever/pain with ibuprofen but it was misery that lasted weeks.

Keep us posted on how you feel!
  • Well guys, I took it. And I got it filled for my 1 year old too, better safe than sorry. Fingers crossed we don't have any of the potential yucky side effects:/

  • Good luck! I’m glad you erred on the side of caution. Tough choice but I will say my mom got the flu this year and it was rough. The tamiflu definitely reduced symptoms and her sick time but her oxygen was so low they prescribed her an oxygen tank to send her home. If your O2 gets low, your little buns in the belly’s will too.
  • Just seeing this but I took it when our 4 year old got the flu a couple weeks ago. No one else in our house got the flu. H took this too and it passed pretty quickly.

  • So far so good. No major side effects . I have been feeling sorta blah, so I am glad I took the medicine when I did. DD had a really rough night with a high fever, but she woke up much better. DS is showing no symptoms and hasn't had any side effects from the medicine so far. Fingers crossed we dodged a bullet.
