Easter

@professormama got me thinking about Easter. What is everyone's plans for their other kiddos and/or this LO for this Easter? (Assuming the LO will be here by then!)

EDD is 4/25, so we are playing Easter by ear. Usually we host, but obviously that would be too risky this year and neither mine nor H's family has said anything about hosting yet, so I'm kind of hoping we can just have a low-key day at home. DS1 is 14yo and last year we did an Easter basket in the morning that was filled with sweets, sunrise church service with the family, brunch at our house afterwards and a challenging scavenger hunt in the afternoon that lead DS to a wrapped present (a Ron Swanson POP figure- he loves Parks and Rec). This year I am at a loss what to get him so I need to start brainstorming now.

  • We are not religious so Easter isn't a big deal at our house BUT we love secular holidays so we will do a small Easter basket and an egg hunt. I think a plush, books and art supplies. Not sure what to put in the Easter eggs. Last year they were empty and she just like finding them. Don't really like to do candy (DD is 2.5)

  • My mom mentioned that she got a few things for the baby for Easter (this is our first) and I was like “wait, should I be doing something?” Easter was my Bompa’s favorite holiday and my birthday is always around Easter so I kind of want to do something. I think it’s going to be a fabric basket that I can reuse for a couple years while he’s small and put some cute Easter onesies or a book in it.

My mom will likely be visiting to help me out with LO so we’ll probably do a low-key dinner with us and her. Normally DH and I go to my aunt’s for a huge family dinner with tons of people so low-key sounds a little better to me since we’re likely to have a one week old if he’s born on his due date.
  • We aren’t religious either and if I don’t go into labor on my own, they will probably induce a week or two before Easter. So I’m not planning much. Maybe a coloring book or some sort of activity thing for DD and a small plush for the baby. Might try to do an egg hunt. Maybe. Might try to recruit my parents on that one.

Probably dinner at my parents. Mmm ham.

And all the candy for mama, lol.

  • I totally haven't thought about Easter, as we aren't religious either. Since I'm due 4/12 I will probably be right in the thick of things, although my mom should be here at that time. I'll leave it up to DH to do something for his daughter - even though she's 17 he will still hide eggs for her! And maybe my mom will make brunch. With mimosas...!!!!!
  • @thatbaintforbetty candy for a GD grad? 100% yes.
  • We have an embroidered basket for DD and we will likely get one for this LO, even though he'll have no clue what's going on. We'll do something super tiny in his basket (again, because it doesn't matter) but not sure about what to do for DD. I have ideas of a new hooded towel for baths, practice scissors, or some play doh. Definitely nothing crazy.

@kosmo86 my DD turns 3 in May and we are toying with the idea of putting quarters in a few of the eggs. She knows what money is and likes to put money in her piggy bank. So no candy. Win win for both of us.
  • @lyse01 I’m so excited to be able to eat again. Like I can have rolls and mashed potatoes and milk with Easter dinner. And dessert!

  • @mrstmoose I made some orange play doh and stuck it in piping bags with green ribbon: ta-da! Carrots!
  • Nothing! Absolutely nothing. I’m just not willing to deal with it this year.
    On that note, serious question.
    Peeps: yes or no?
  • @lilpotatomama this may change your view of me but it's a hard no for me. They are gross.
  • I scheduled my RCS for 4/12, 3 days IP so I'll go home Monday. We already told our families regardless of when baby come (4/12 or earlier) we will be staying home and will allow visitors from 10-12 and 3-5.  I'm not dealing with bleeding, recovery, a newborn, and toddler, on little to no sleep, away from home all day.  They've all been receptive.

    Also @lilpotatomama peeps🐥 are a NO.

  • We usually travel about 4-5hrs away to have Passover with our friends, but this year we’ll just make a niceish dinner here. Maybe takeout instead, if I’m being honest with myself . Also looking forward to stocking up on jellybeans and peanut butter eggs!
  • My sister hosts a giant Passover Seder that we were going to fly down for this year, but baby kinda derailed those plans. Hoping we can do a bit of a passover dinner, or at least hoping someone makes me matzo ball soup
  • I love Easter. We missed it when DD was born because she was born Palm Sunday. I just wasn’t ready to take her out into a huge crowd (our church is pretty big and bigger on Easter). This one I suspect may be born right around Easter too. My mom insisted on getting DD an Easter dress but at least it was very inexpensive in case we don’t make it.
We don’t have family around to do any celebrations with, so church is all we’d be missing. DD isn’t old enough to know she’s missing anything anyway.
  • Nothing! Absolutely nothing. I’m just not willing to deal with it this year.
    On that note, serious question.

Only after you slit open the package and let them get a little stale.

  • I’m due On Easter... so not planning on anything and if we make it to church because I’m not in labor that’s fine.
Dd will get a basket with some new books and busy toys to help with her being contented when baby is new, she loves baskets so I may go get her a nice basket to be her own so that I can have my baskets back for storing baby stuff. I made her an Easter-y dress 👗 (see crafty thread for pics) and hope baby is actually here already by then honestly.

I cant have peeps, but I love them, especially a week or so stale. <3 I don’t digest fructose though, so no high fructose corn syrup either. It makes me sooooo sick.
  • I'm going to prepare my daughter's basket ahead of time. Aside from that if for some reason I can't be with my daughter in Easter I can count on my parents to take her to church and handle an Easter egg hunt

Like I mentioned in the randoms, I’ll have the Easter baskets made ahead of time. And I’m going to fill plastic eggs with Hershey’s kisses and pennies ahead of time as well.

My family is coming in town and getting a hotel. They’ll take my kiddo to church in the AM (I’ll go if I’m still pregnant, but obvs not if I have a newborn or am in labor). Then I figure we will do an easy lunch at my place - I’ll probably get my parents to bring a ham, and we will have frozen rolls and fruit and whatever else is easy. And I’ll let my husband be in charge of hiding eggs. I figure it’ll be fun to sit out in a lawn chair and watch the hunting with a newborn in my arms, if he’s arrived by then (hopefully!)

    @lilpotatomama peeps are disgusting.

    *edited to fix typos
  • I'm an atheist and due three days before hand so I doubt anything will happen. I'll probably do a basket and egg hunt for her in a few years though!

The only acceptable way to eat Peeps is throw them in the trash

  • Team NO Peeps! For some reason I always think Reese’s Eggs are the best tasting Reese’s.

Easter has always been my favorite holiday. As I said in the randoms, I already bought DD, DS, and baby matching outfits for Easter. I figured with a 6 year age gap between my girls, I have very limited time where they’ll want to wear cheesy matching outfits lol.  DD and DS have personalized baskets but ill probably be lazy this year and get them a pre made one. DHs grandparents do a huge Easter egg hunt for all the great grand children. Well probably do that and either go to brunch (after church) with my parents or my mom will cook dinner. I definitly plan on baby-wearing because germs
  • @lilpotatomama NO on peeps. We’ll try our best to avoid candy in the basket because we still have some left over from Christmas. We’ll probably get a couple books, Legos, maybe new swimsuits, swim shoes, beach towel, and I love the idea above with play doh!

  • Everyone who hates peeps: GOOD ANSWER. Peeps are sugar coated styrofoam chicks of shame. Even worse, they have flavors this year. Pancakes and syrup, root beer float, cotton candy, blue raspberry 🤢 so gross.
    If you like peeps... WHY?
  • @blueberrymomma 100% with you on the Reese’s eggs. I actually prefer all of the seasonal Reese’s to regular Reese cups, but the eggs are definitely the best.
  • @MRDCle @kbirchtree stale?? What? Does this change their texture or something?
  • @lilpotatomama I’m not a fan of marshmallows in general. The only thing I enjoy about peeps is that it’s fun to put them in the microwave and watch them grow. My siblings and I used to do that with them when we were kids.

Not sure what the plan for Easter is yet, but I do want to make it special since it’ll be the first holiday after baby is born.
  • @lilpotatomama you should try it. It lets out some of the sticky and the moisture. More... um... chewable? Less full your mouth with goo. Which I also don’t mind. I miss them.

For those that asked why, I’ve always had a sweet tooth. I like the texture and flavor of sugar cubes, I’d eat a box of them. It’s just how I am.
  • I'm laughing about all of the peeps comments. I have a major sweet tooth so I do like peeps, but marshmallows are pretty low on my list. My dad LOVES them though. They are basically the only candy he likes. So weird.

We're not religious so we don't celebrate Easter. But we're in South Africa this year so I have my eyes open for Cadbury Cream Eggs. I LOVE CADBURY CREAM EGGS.

  • *Due April 2nd with a baby girl*

My husband isn't interested in getting an Easter outfit for our DD. I felt sad when the conversation came up because I would love to put her in a beautiful, colorful something. 😊 But I get it, she would be only less than a month old (unless she comes early) and will likely be swaddled most of the time anyway. I can just pick the most pastel, colorful newborn item we already have and put that on her and use a colorful swaddle blanket too. But it doesn't feel the same as having an Easter outfit picked out! We will likely be at MIL's farm for easter with my in-laws. :-) Even though we're all adults (until this year thanks to our LO), my MIL & FIL hide eggs for us each year and we all search for them on the farm at dusk in teams of 2 (couple vs couple). So much fun! We'll likely not be participating in an egg hunt this year, but maybe next year! And hopefully DH will allow a pretty Easter dress for DD. ☺
  • On peeps: can take them or leave them, but stale is better and while colors are fun, flavors are just weird.

Easter is the 21st so we should definitely have a baby by then (due 4/2). My plan is to wear the baby to church and make DH wrangle DD in the pew. We 100% need to plan to get there early which is going to be freaking impossible unless I lay out an outfit for DH the night before. I should probably shop for him now - he hates all his current button-down options.

We will likely follow this up with Easter dinner at the ILs (5 min away...I’m so not traveling across a state to my family’s). MIL usually needs my help organizing a menu and decorating for/throwing a holiday dinner, so I should start talking to her now about the level of help I’m willing to provide (minimal) and hope that when relatives invite themselves, as they often do, that a few of them are women that can take over the kitchen.

We’ll do a basket for DD (2) and maybe one for LO (depending on how much DD wants to share). Plan: religious book in English, thematic book in Italian (gonna work on some bilingual skills), some developmental skill-building toy (play doh sounds good), probably some seed packets for a science project of watering plants and watching them grow/change, maybe a new box of crayons.

We’ll also try to make some cards the week ahead of time for grandparents, and I will almost certainly pawn the kids off on DH for Maundy Thursday services.

side note: @mighty_montgomery thanks for the tips in Randoms about checking YouTube for the religious books read aloud. I’d hate to waste money on ones that don’t fit the message I want to convey and they’re so impossible to find in person!
  • On peeps: they're gross, although my sister loves them stale as well.  I find it super weird.  My favorite Easter candy used to be Cadbury cream eggs but now they taste like cheap chocolate to me 🤷‍♀️.  Cadbury mini eggs are still addicting though.

On an Easter basket: we aren't religious either, but my mom would always hide baskets for us and make us a scavenger hunt to find them.  I'm hoping I'll have the energy to do that for DS and take him to an egg hunt this year also.  I'm putting Easter/spring books in each basket and an Easter clothing item.  I'll probably also do a small toy or playdough/coloring book for DS1.  I'll leave the candy up to grandparents since they always go crazy with it.

  • @tumblefluff I forgot that I usually get the kids new swim suits and put them in their Easter baskets. Also DD saw a unicorn beach towel at Sams Club so either myself or MIL will get her that. Also bubbles are always great
  • @blueberrymomma those are great ideas for Easter baskets. I have to remember that DD's birthday is in May so I don't need to go crazy. And let's face it, homegirl has plenty of stuff anyways.

@mighty_montgomery as much as I would love to get this little guy a super adorable Easter outfit, I also know I will probably rather him be in a sleeper or something like that versus an uncomfortable outfit. Besides, I can dress DD up and have fun with that!
