Urine and bile(?) color

hey guys! Long time lurker, never posted but now I need some help. I see my doctor on tuesday but just wanted to see if anyone else has experienced this?

the past month (maybe two?) my pee has been a nice shade of orange. Maybe a little lighter than orange Gatorade is my best description. This morning I felt nauseated and when I threw up it was all stomach acid/bile(?) and it was the same color.

i don’t have any other aches or pains other than feeling crazy tired all the time. I am anemic so they made me start taking 325mg twice a day of iron...which honestly I don’t take regularly because it makes me feel Ike garbage. Could this cause it? I brought it up to my doctor two weeks ago and her only comment was, “huh, that’s weird.” .......like, okay?

Dr. Google (I know ...I need to stay off the internet 🤦🏻‍♀️) is telling me I’m having liver or kidney failure which is obviously anxiety inducing on top of everything else! Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this and what your docs have said!

Re: Urine and bile(?) color

  • No experience, not a doctor, but I’d write down what you’re eating/taking over the next few days as well as any other symptoms you experience (nausea, itching, acid reflux, headaches, back pain, sleeplessness, etc etc) and have it prepared for your doctor. There might be something they see that you would never have known to mention.

  • If it helps ease your concerns any the 3rd trimester some women begin to feel nausea again.  On top of that Iron can also make you nauseous.  I’m also anemic and have to take it daily.  Make sure you take it with food as that really helps.

I’ve also noticed a change in urine color (darker than pre-pregnancy) but this has happened in each of my pregnancies.  Increase your fluid intake as it’s more likely that you’re dehydrated than in kidney/liver failure.  You’d very likely have a lot more symptoms than vomiting/change in urine color.

  • My urine was orange from the antibiotic they gave me for my bladder infection. Also my urine is always darker in the morning after I take my prenatal so perhaps the iron can affect the color?
I second to increase your water intake. Also I’d call the doctor in the morning and ask

I agree on mentioning it to your doctor again.  Could be something as easy as being a bit dehydrated like the other girls mentioned.  I know when I switch vitamins or have forgotten them in the past for a few days and take them again it makes some pretty funky colours (neon almost haha).

That being said, mine has been an orange-ish colour lately which apparently happens with cholestasis.  Not saying this to make you worried but just wanted to reinforce that you said you don't have any other weird symptoms which is probably a good sign!  I had really bad right upper quadrant pain and uncontrollable itching since November and this was the last symptom to kind of come about.  Not a doctor by any means so I'd definitely run it by your ob again and let her know it's bothering you.  Good luck!
  • I have to agree with all the ladies here that you should mention this to your doctor. It could be something serious or it could be nothing, and unfortunately you won't know for sure until you get checked out. I hope that doesn't sound harsh, I'm just saying you should definitely go see your doctor because none of us can really say for certain what it is and based on all the responses here there is a big range of things it could be.

  • @stacisaun :  Just now saw this, but hope you get some clarity and reassurance today!  Come back and let us know it goes if you get the chance/feel comfortable. :)
  • Thanks for the input ladies! Apparently the iron pills are doing weird things to my system AND I just got diagnosed with GD 😩 which is doing weird things as well. So it goes!
  • @stacisaun Even though those things suck, glad it's not something more serious!  There's a GD thread here too you can jump in on!
