Also, DS1 has said twice now that he wants to put "the number zero candle on baby brother's cake," and I totally think he's onto something. Moms should get a "birth," cake or something special for all the work of growing a human!
@honey_suckle when I had an antenatal stay with DD, the food at the hospital I was at the longest (3 hospitals total), had absolutely terrible food. Breakfast and lunch were usually tolerable but I finally had DH bring in cereal and milk for breakfast, tolerated lunches and then usually had dinner brought in by either DH or a family member.
@kangstadt@mrstmoose yeah, it's so hard to plan for how long we'll have to be there, but it seems that after most twin deliveries, the parents stay about a week, and that's a long time with hospital meals and takeout. Luckily we live about 400m from the hospital, so I'm hoping DH will be able to pop by and pick up food etc.
I’ll be freezing meals for my husband and son and special postpartum fare for me (I found my digestion very sensitive after my last baby and I needed easy to digest foods like what you would eat recovering from an illness).
For the boys: individual portions of lasagna, baked ziti, meatballs, home made sauce.
broccoli/ham Mac n cheese casserole tuna caserol (think home made tuna helper) Sheppards pie pot pies
raw pre assembled packages for easy pot roast, baked chicken with all the veggies/potatoes in that can just cook together in the oven, stews (beef and lamb).
shreded chicken, pork, and precooked ground beef and turkey - that can be easily added to anything
chicken soup in case anyone gets sick
for me: -bone broth: chicken beef and pork in large quantities individually portioned. -chinese red date chicken soup -pork trotter soup -rice congee -precooked rice/grains that can be added to bowels, fried rices, soups and congees and further cooked. -a well stocked pantry -lactation cookies, granola and snacks -standard shopping list that can be given to a helper or Instacart order. (So we have fresh fruits and veggies)
If you would like any of these recipes let me know, I’m happy to share/post.
Much of the postpartum fare is from the book the first 40 days.
DH and I both work full time and I had been looking for easy freezer meal ideas and came across the family freezer website. You have to pay a one time fee for access but it allows you to pick your recipes and makes a master grocery list for everything you need with no waste. The worst thing weve found is some meals were more bland than we like but it was fixed with some last minute spices.
My husband took one of the frozen PP meals to work today. 😢
Me: What did you bring for lunch today? DH: Frozen chili. Hopefully it thaws in time. Me: Oh, nice. ..... Me: Wait, did you say the frozen chicken chili? That's a postpartum meal for us. DH: Oh, sorry. I didn't know. *conversation about postpartum meals and why they're necessary* Me: It's fine today but in the future, don't eat what I make and put in the freezer until the baby comes.
My heart hurts over that wasted meal. If your husband doesn't know why you're freezing meals, let him know before it's too late.
DH is at an event with dinner provided tonight... I'm making a giant lasagna for little old me and the freezer! Probably should have started a little earlier, but I'm so excited for this Italian classic it will be worth the wait! 😋
@thatbaintforbetty I always feel like my Italian nonni is with me when I make this. As an expecting Mamma it's even funnier thinking ahead to hopefully being the matriarc of an Italian family myself!
I'm starting to make 2 crockpot meals a week to freeze -- this week was two batches of pulled pork -- for sandwiches later.
Here is the recipe --> https://tasty.co/recipe/pulled-pork-nachos -- I used pork loin which is a leaner cut so I added 1/2 cup of broth to the crockpot recipe (just the made meat part of the recipe and I severed it on potatoes bread with a pineapple and bbq sauce)
My mom came to visit for the weekend and we did: ham & split pea soup, spicy chicken & black bean soup, three cheese ziti, spinach/mushroom/chicken alfredo, and some sort of cabbage roll casserole (sounds gross but is SO good - if you like cabbage ).
All the talk of lasagna is making me think I'll do that next, it's my favorite. Probably some chili and pulled pork too. @avidlyuks36 I think I'll steal that recipe!
Our upright is full (I’ve added since taking this picture), as are our two fridge/freezers. Problem is that I haven’t gotten everything made that I wanted to.

And a meatloaf recipe I plan on freezing a few pounds of (sauce doubled and kept separate until ready to eat) https://selfproclaimedfoodie.com/grannys-classic-meatloaf-recipe/

Except my chicken parmigiana.
Apparently his mom cooked a lot of it when he as a kid and now he has a permanent burnout on most of it. 😭
