Did I miss my opportunity?

A few months ago when we first got DD her potty she was excited about it and would sit on it for like 20 mins at a time and read books.  She never went pee but she would at least sit there.  One time she peed on it, I think just by accident.  I was very excited and praised her to the moon!!  However, she didn't want to sit on it anymore after that.  I stopped asking her to sit on it figuring she wasn't ready.  Now we're trying again and she still says she doesn't want to sit on it and even gets upset if we insist.  She says she doesn't want to wear underwear either.  I'm pretty bummed out about it.  I feel like I missed my chance to PT her and now its going to be hell.

  • No, I don't think you missed anything. Mia went through the same thing and I'm about 98% confident that those inital successes were just a thrill of having something new to "play" with. I really don't think she was ready and still believe that over the next few months, she'll come around. She's just now starting to advise us that she has pooped and wants a clean diaper. Previously she'd be find sitting it in all day long.

  • Nope, you didn't miss your chance! Let me tell you, we have been "potty trained" only to have DD regress after several months of going pee and poo in the toilet and not wetting her bed at night. It just takes time, but you'll get there. Maybe you could try putting her on the actual toilet. This is the only thing that worked for us. DD would not sit on her little potties, but she did beautifully when I got her an elmo seat cover and an elmo stool to get up on the toilet. Good luck!!!
