  • Just following up on this thread.  I had my early level 2 anatomy scan today and they found a Echogenic focus on the baby’s heart.  I’m feeling so much anxiety and so unsettled at this point.  It can be a soft marker for DS plus I had an abnormal NT Scan.  Yet my NIPT came back normal.  My doctors are confident in the bloodwork but to be honest I’m leaning towards an amnio at this point because it the two soft markers.  Anyone have any experience here?
  • @cbowl10 I'm sorry you are going through this. I have my early scan Friday so I can't share any guidance. I was told by my OB that the amnio is less risk than the CVS and that is diagnostic testing so it will give you more definitive answers. Sending positive thoughts. It is definitely a personal choice but if it is driving you crazy, maybe go with an amnio so you have answers. The genetic specialist we see since our abnormal NT scan also said they have alot of confidence in the bloodwork NIPT info too, but that if we are ever driven insane with uncertainty than to go with an amnio. I'm sorry I can't provide more guidance to you

  • I just read your post in your group thread @cbowl10 and was going to point you in the direction of this thread. I've not personally experienced this but a friend of mine has and her son is perfectly healthy now (turns 10 this year), though he spent a fair bit of time in NICU when first born. She opted to do an amnio and because they're not done through the cervix anymore (they're performed via guided ultrasound in Australia, hopefully they're the same in the US) they're much safer than they used to be. I would bring up your concerns and anxiety with your OB and see what they say about performing an amnio. Wishing you the best of luck.
  • Thank you both for your responses @wiseh and @BlondePeanut .  Sending you good vibes for your scan on Friday @BlondePeanut .  My H and I have decided we are going to move forward with the amnio most likely.
  • @cbowl10 I'm sorry you're going through this! For whatever it's worth, my OB warned me off of an elective NT and NIPT because she said across the board they've been seeing a higher rate of false positives. Might be fear of malpractice or something, or the tests/scans just honestly not giving the most accurate data every single time, but take some hope that your doctors are confident in your blood work (false positives are common; false negatives are not). Whatever you choose to do I hope it goes well!
  • @cbowl10 I'm sorry to hear this! I can't give you any advice, but I hope that it ends up just being nothing. Good luck with your amnio!
  • @cbowl10 I'm sorry you're dealing with this news; I too have two friends who received the same diagnosis and now have healthy kids.

I would not hesitate to have the amnio, though, *as long as* your provider are skilled and experienced. I had CVSes with both pregnancies and was very confident that the risk was much lower than the generally reported risk of miscarriage, because the doctor is one of the best in the country. The hospital I go to estimates the risk at 1 in 700 on the basis of their numbers to date, and they can't even link that 1 in 700 to the actual test, except by close timing. You can ask for a prescription for an antibiotic to further decrease the risk (it's thought a significant portion of the miscarriages related to CVS and amnio are caused by bacteria introduced during the test).

@marijaa333 I wish I had known about the antibiotic when I had my amnio!

If you want to get it done I say do it but also don't let yourself feel pressured into it. I felt pressured and I didn't like that.
  • @sparklingdiamond My doc prescribes it routinely for two days. You pick it up a few days before and take the first dose the morning of the test. The last dose is the evening of the next day.
  • @cbowl10 Hoping your amnio went well and your results are positive <3

  • @cbowl10 I'm happy to hear that. And I'm happy you were able to get some relief <3

  • I'm so happy to hear that @cbowl10! Wishing you all the best for an uneventful remainder of your pregnancy <3
