Rh - rh +

I'm O POSITIVE and I just got a call from my doctor telling me my blood work came back and my antibodies were high. He told me he would get a an appointment with a perinatal doctor to see if it's due to my baby having rh - or rh + blood. Should I be worried? Has this happened to anyone?

I am RH negative and I need the shot at 28 weeks. Basically my body could start attacking the baby. It is a bigger deal second child. By modern medicine is great. I just need a shot in third trimester.

Is yourSO RH negative? That could be it. I don't believe it is a huge deal, you just have to get a shot.

  • Hi, welcome knottie! And congrats on the pregnancy.

We have a nice community here where you will find a great support system but in order to do that please change your screen name from knottie(bunch of numbers) to something we can more easily identify you by. You will have to go to the knot website to do that and then log out of the bump and back in for it to take affect.

Once you’ve updated that feel free to introduce yourself on the intro post pinned at the top of the board and read the thread titled “read this first” so you can get a sense of how the board is set up and the guidelines we all try to follow.

as for your question, have you asked your dr if you should be worried? Obviously there could be others here who are O positive or have high antibodies so they can give you their experiences but this sounds like a great question to ask your nurse/OB as they would know your medical history.

  • I am rh- and all 3 of my kids have been rh+. As far as I understood from my doctor it is only an issue of the mom is rh- and the father/baby is rh+.

I got a rhogam shot in my 2nd trimester and post delivery, after my miscarriage and if I ever had any other bleeding during pregnancy. Definitely a question for your doctor.

Granted it could be outdated/wrong information but I didn’t even think they could test if your baby have rh+/- blood until after delivery which is why I got the shot every pregnancy.

Sounds like you may have a positive antibody screen. If you are Rh positive, it doesn’t matter if your baby is + or -.

For all prenatal blood banking draws, OB’s generally order a type (you are O+) and a screen (screens for clinically significant antibodies. Some you can contract with previous blood transitions or in pregnancy).

If I had to take a stab in the dark. My guess is you have a positive antibody screen, and they want to or already have tested the titers for it and will monitor it. But in all honesty, this is best a question for your OB and not us. Because even I, who have been to school for these types of test results, have no idea what the bearing is on your personal clinical picture, especially with such little information.
