(Double posted HDBD so changing this one!)
Are you reading anything good? Any book recommendations: parenting, birth or otherwise?

Re: What are you reading - Winter Edition

  • Not parenting or birth but I've got a reading goal of 35 books this year and I'm SO close at 33...currently reading Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine - pretty good read and she reminds me of Amy Farrah-Fawler from Big Bang Theory.

I finally got back into the book I'm reading. It's called My Husband's Secret, it's by Liane Moriarty (it's been so long I had to look up the title and author). It's good, but there are soooo many characters. I recently bought The Casual Vacancy by JK Rowling, recommended by a friend. I plan to start it on our flight next weekend.

Birth wise, I recommend checking out Evidence Based Birth for anyone debating certain aspects of their delivery. I found their pain management series of articles to be really interesting.

I also got and skimmed through Siblings without Rivalry, which was interesting but not necessarily groundbreaking. I'm sure I'll reference it once LO is actually here.

  • Haven't read any parenting books as of yet, probably won't to be honest LOL. but currently reading Becoming by Michelle Obama. wasn't going to get it but heard a lot of good reviews from people i know and trust. I'm always here for a good book!
@meggyme i LOVE Liane Moriarty. all of her books have a great twist at the end. I hope you like it so far...and tell me when you get into A Casual Vacancy, i have seen it at the library but always nervous to get it, because i heard it wasn't as good as the HP series...but i'm willing to give it a chance LOL.

@HoneyBear40 you are very close! i'm positive you can smash through 2 more books
  • @zionsmama85 I was listening to Becoming on Audible while I was painting the nursery! I am enjoying it so far, what do you think?

I also have copies of hypnobirthing and natural childbirth the Bradley way that I plan to start this week
  • I keep saying that I need to pick up a “real” book because everything I am reading and listening to is birth related, and I feel kind of burnt out on uterus and contraction talk. I need a break!

    Currently re-reading:
    Ina May’s Guide to Childbirth
    Natural Childbirth the Bradley Way

    Reading for the first time:
    Birthing from Within

    Listening to (podcasts):
    The Birth Hour
the new season of Serial (it can’t all be about birth!)
  • @maggiemadeit I didn't realize there was a new season of Serial! What/who is the subject?

  • I finished Enrique’s Journey a few weeks ago. It was originally published in a weekly series in the LA times, but it’s a book now based on a Honduran’s illegal immigration into the US. I thought it was a great (and sad) read.
  • @abbykwail so far i like it, i am in the middle i guess, where they had just gotten married. It's interesting to hear her side and opinions so far, but i enjoy memoirs a lot anyway.
  • @meggyme The new season is about the criminal justice system, and is all focused on a particular courthouse in Cleveland, but not on a single case. It’s different from the other seasons, but still pretty compelling.
  • @maggiemadeit I'll have to get them downloaded for our upcoming trip!

  • Hooray for reading threads!

I am reading War Storm, the fourth book in the Red Queen series.  It's mindless and entertaining, but I'm finding myself wishing she'd get to the point a little more quickly (probably because I really only get to read at bedtime, and I'm tired!  LOL).

@HoneyBear40 I've heard good things about that book!

I haven't really read any parenting books this time around, though I'll probably refresh my memory of Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Baby before #3 gets here.
  • Recently finished "The Sh!t No One Tells You About Pregnancy" by Dawn Dais. I'm not sure it was particularly informative but it was an amusing read. Currently reading "HypnoBirthing: The Mongan Method" by Marie Mongan, "Please Don't Bite the Baby (And Please Don't Chase the Dogs)" by Lisa Edward, and non-baby related "Spinning Silver" by Naomi Novik
  • I just finished The Seven Sisters. It took me a while to get into it, but then I couldn’t put it down. Now I’m on to Mr. Dickens and His Carol, in honor of the Christmas season.

  • @mayoduck Is Spinning Silver good? I loved Uprooted!
  • @zionsmama85 I am a bit ahead of you, so I won't spoil anything, but I am enjoying it so far! I love how down to earth and relatable she is.
  • Just read “Bone Music” by Christopher Rice and enjoyed it. Starting “Chambers” by Sarah Gerdes. Haven’t read something I’d rave about recently, though. And need to pick up something as a refresher to prep for labor with this one!
  • @maggiemadeit It's interesting but I'm not hooked yet. But I am less than 100 pages in and it is a 400+ page book so I would say it's too early for me to pass judgment yet. I'll give you an update when I'm further into it!
  • finished Eleanor Oliphant and started reading Committed: A Love Story by Elizabeth Gilbert on my tablet with the thinking I can read it in the car while it's dark during our travels and in bed without getting up to turn the light off hahaha. I read Eat, Pray, Love a while ago and I had started this one but gave up on it so here's hoping I can stick with it this time as I already made it further than Kindle said I did before ;)
