GTKY: Black Friday

Do you shop on Black Friday or have any Black Friday traditions?

If you shop, what are you hoping to score this year?

Much love and luck to anyone working retail on Black Friday this year!

Re: GTKY: Black Friday

  • I used to shop with my mom and a group of other women in my family on Black Friday, but after working in retail and meeting DH who worked retail for years after we met, it just wasn’t the same. Now we eat DH’s fabulous leftover turkey sandwiches and watch movies in our pajamas on Black Friday.

  • Not typically a black Friday shopper, but if I saw any awesome deals on a crib/dresser I would definitely head out for them :) not worth it for the littler stuff- I'd rather avoid the crowds & check for cyber Monday deals

Usually on Black Friday we go on a hike, then head home for leftovers and games all afternoon. This year, like @kianarain , I need to get DH a Nintendo Switch. I think the best deal I saw was online though? So hopefully that'll take 10 min in my PJs and then onto the hike/games? What good deal have you seen for it @kianarain ?

ETA: I think Gamestop had the best deal, and assumed that was online, but now see is in-store only. Ugh.

  • Heck no, and won't be changing my routine this year! We usually go to a movie that day. I'll wait for Cyber Monday sales. :)

  • @Kabazaba ahhhh damn, I was hoping yours would be online so I wouldn't have to do in-store! I saw at Target it's $299 and includes console & a Mario game worth $60. I'm not gonna lie, I love Mario so that's kinda selfish on my end lol but potentially worthwhile when I'm too pregnant to do anything else.
  • No! I stay far away from stores between Black Friday all the way through January. For retail shopping, I still go grocery shopping.
  • @rooonilwaazlib what movie are you going to see? We want to go see one this weekend but can’t choose between Instant Family or Crimes of Grindewald.

  • I won't step foot in a store on Thursday but I also do most of my shopping online. My mil and I have gone to Carters and Old Navy early Friday morning the past couple of years because she buys DS his whole winter wardrobe as part of his Christmas present. She's so excited to shop for the new baby this year and who am I to say no to clothes for the little guy?

I'm hoping to score an ipad for my fil from Costco; they're only $250 and it comes with their concierge technical service which my fil could use. Other than that, I'll shop Amazon for my nieces and my nephews are getting experience gifts.
  • speaking of Costco - they’re doing an online instant pot deal for anyone interested :) I’m getting one for my bro and SIL but know other people on the board have talked about getting one.

  • @DLpanda08 we saw Crimes of Grindlewald last week and I personally loved it! It has me itching to reread the HP books, or at least Deathly Hallows, because obviously this one involves the friendship/relationship between Dumbledore and Grindlewald, which we learned about in DH. I hope you see this and I can't wait to hear your thoughts!

We're babysitting my nephew on Friday, and he's 10 or 11 years old.  I'm hoping he wants to see Ralph Breaks the Internet, but maybe the Grinch (even though I've heard many adults are disappointed in it).  Any other suggestions for movies which will appeal to boys that age are welcome! If he wants to see Grindlewald, we might throw that in as an option too even though we just saw it.

  • @roonilwaazlib we took our daughter to see the grinch today and it was really cute!! I enjoyed it.

I am not against shopping on Black Friday at all. We won’t be shopping this year and didn’t the year before either. We have gotten some good deals in the past on electronics. I do most of my shopping online and am pretty much done with Christmas this year!
  • I usually do some shopping on Black Friday but not like in years past. But this year I don't have any real plans to go out. I usually end up at CVS and get a bunch of little stuff that's free after extra bucks. I already bought a TV and Amazon fire tablet for DD on Sunday. She's done except little stocking stuffers and a movie for her Christmas Eve box. I see Target has some movies for $4 but I'm certainly not getting out just for that.
  • @rooonilwaazlib there doesn’t seem to be a ton of kids movies out right now. I think the ones you listed are about it for that age. Although double check because some theaters do special screenings of classics around this time of year. A theater by us is showing a Christmas Story this weekend!

DS has been wanting to see the Grinch, but I honestly don’t know if I can stomach another reboot of that story.

  • You will not catch me out out on black Friday and absolutely NOT on Thanksgiving. It makes me so sad that they make people work on a holiday, and in such madness.
  • I'm not going out black Friday, I work night shift thanksgiving and black Friday, however I'm hoping to find some kind of discount on an American Girl doll/bitty baby. Also will probably try to buy our rug and curtains for nursery!
  • So many of you not going out!!
I don't even want any big purchases this year, but I get so excited for Black Friday!! I love the rush of it all, the craziness, and the strategy. Usually I take notes of what stores open when, I have my list of who still needs what gifts, and I have an idea list of what I hope to get at each place. This year......I just have my list of people I need to buy for.

This year I've been watching Amazon lightening deals. The last few years I find I end up getting the majority of my gifts purchased on Amazon anyway, but I have to go out shopping! It's been a tradition with the women of my family as long as I can remember.

  • I am getting nursery set up Friday. No shopping for me! I am claustrophobic. Last time I ventured out on Black Friday was 5 years ago and I panicked and puked in the middle of the bedding section at Target lol
  • Im not usually one for black friday shopping but we MIGHT venture out to a furniture store... We need a new sectional and im guessing furniture stores wont be wild.

Oh and verizon just announced they are selling the pixel 3 for $400 off online starting Thanksgiving... So we are buying those online tonight at midnight!

Costco had some good deals on American Girl dolls! Actually, their toy selections are on point this year. Pretty sure it’s a one stop shop for those that have littles to gift!

I took advantage of Target’s Lego deals for DD. Got $10 gift card I’m going to use towards nursery furniture from Target but I’m also waiting for 20% off coupon. I wish they had the “spend $200 on nursery and get $20 gift card” deal right now!!

Thursday will be spent cooking all day. Friday- we might venture out to the mall but I doubt it. I want to take my family who’s only in town until Sunday around the city — particularly take them to zoolights at Nat’l Zoo (DC locals - opening night is Fri)!

Saturday morning we might hit the mall only bc I have a pile of ON & Gap stuff to return. I’m doing most of my shopping online - this year, it’s all the essentials (baby nursery, DD big girl room, nursing clothes - it’s about time). I don’t mind waiting for Cyber Monday deals either so I’m hoping it won’t be too stressful.
  • I dont usually go out on black friday but I need a new ipad (for myself lol) so I might venture to target if they dont have their deal online. My only goal for black friday/cyber Monday is to not go broke buying myself/baby things before I actually get xmas presents for my family
  • Some if you guys are Christmas shopping? Wow! We are do last minute, my husband and I pop on Amazon a week or two before Christmas and purchase gifts. Then my two teen daughters help me wrap the gifts. It's a new tradition, they take turns watching my 6 year old and help me wrap the other daughters gift and so on.

Then on Christmas Eve they help me bring down the gifts for the tree and stockings. This could take until midnight depending on when my youngest falls asleep. So, Santa has helpers!
  • I’m not a Black Friday shopper. Or a shopper in general. I am so thankful that the only people we buy Christmas gifts for are both sets of parents and DH’s sister. My sister and BIL decided a few years back that we would stop exchanging gifts and it’s magical.
  • I won't go out to shop but I will shop online... does anyone know if this Target 20% off coupon that you can get today by spending $50 can be stacked with the registry completion discount? The fine print does not say you can't. I guess I could call but I'm sure there are long wait times for customer service today.

  • If anyone else is curious, I answered my own question. In the fine print on the registry completion discount it says cannot be combined with other total transaction discounts.
