Placenta Previa

Hi moms! I just had my 20 ultrasound and I found out I have placenta previa. Definitely not the news we wanted. Does anyone have experience with this?

Re: Placenta Previa

  • I was diagnosed with placenta previa after spotting at 14-15 weeks. Mine is posterior and I believe the cervix is completely covered by the inferior edge (based on the report I read). I am still upset about it but trying to remain positive because there is plenty of time for it to move out of the way. 90% of 2nd trimester previas are resolved before birth. Breathe momma, I was stressed to the max about it but you need to remain positive, odds are in your favor right now.

Did they give you any recommendations or things to pay attention to? I know pelvic rest is a big one but other than that I don't have restrictions right now. Do you know if yours is anterior or posterior?

  • I was Dx at around 13 weeks bases on spotting and US. Like @angelob88 said 90% of the time they will correct themselves. It’s still very early. I’m on pelvic rest and I’m supposed to not really exert myself (no running, jazzercise etc.), and no lifting 15lb+. Just try to stick to your OBs rules and make sure you’re getting checked to see if it moves.

  • Thanks for the encouragement. Mine is anterior. They told me take it easy and the rule of ‘nothing in the vagina’. I go back in February for the final determination. They told me there’s nothing I can do, just lots of hoping and wishing.
  • I had a partial with my last pregnancy and it ended up moving! The pelvic rest sucks but all you can do is hope for good news at the next one!
  • I just found out that I have a complete placenta previa at about 20 weeks. Is there still a good chance it will move if complete? Trying not to worry lol..
  • @elmich3 I think the stat about 90% resolving is based on midpregnancy US. Technically it can't even be formally diagnosed till around then since before that the uterus is so small that the placenta is near the cervix no matter what. (Though I will note, I was told placenta previa by an ER doc and my OB used the same phrase - my MFM is the one that told me it can't be formally diagnosed till later).

So I think you still have a very good chance of it resolving.

  • @elmich3 there's still a good chance it moves. I've heard of it moving completely into 30+weeks. I'm definitely hopeful

  • I was diagnosed at 14 weeks with placenta prévia. They recommended pelvic rest as well. Anxiously waiting for my 20 week scan to see if it moved!
  • Just want to chip in and say that I have a friend who had 2 C-sections due to placenta previa.  Both of her kids were fairly premature, but have grown up perfectly healthy (now 6 and 4, I think!)  So fingers crossed for the best case scenario for you all, but I figured 2 happy stories from the 10% wouldn't hurt!
  • From what I’ve read, most cases resolve on its own. But I’m still freaking out. I had a follow up US today just to get better pics of baby’s heart. It’s only been 3 weeks but I asked the tech anyway if it looked like it had moved, she was pretty vague and just said it was still low... ugh...
  • Going in tomorrow for my ultrasound to see if it moved.. fingers crossed!
  • @jessicaschafer8 my MFM was pretty wishy-washy when I asked at 20 weeks. I'll be back every two weeks so we'll keep it monitored, but it was a little annoying - like, CAN I be off pelvic rest??

    Good luck @elmich3!

  • Ugh pelvic rest. Need I say more? Lol
  • Congrats @elmich3!!! I just set up an acupuncture appointment to aid mine. I’m getting desperate here.

@MRDCle I’m with you on pelvic rest... my doc said they would just leave it and do another determining one at 32 weeks. So I’ve got 9 left to move this sucker.

Anyone heard if any ways to move the placenta other than acupuncture?
  • Yay @elmich3! I forgot to post on here but my placenta also moved at my 21 week anatomy scan. It's now 5 cm away from the cervix and I'm cleared for my home birth! So thankful. Plenty of time to move yet, I've heard it moves the most during the third trimester.

I personally haven't heard of things other than acupuncture, that's the thing that I've researched the most about. I believe there are also herbs and diet that help "raise the Qi" which is what acupuncture is for.

  • @jessicaschafer8 This is a teensy bit off topic for this thread, but have you done acupuncture before? I have an apt for tomorrow (not for placenta previa) and I'm a little nervous!
  • Good luck to all your mamas dealing with this! Hoping they all move in the next few weeks!!
  • @rennie1108 I had never done acupuncture before this but I found it super relaxing. I’m going back 1-2x’s a week to help raise my Qi along with taking herbs. I have a second opinion ultrasound on Tuesday to give me a better measurement of where exactly the placenta is.
  • I found out I have a "low" placenta. They are hopeful it will move since it was barely touching my cervix.
  • @jessicaschafer8 I really enjoyed it as well! I've been feeling a LOT better since, although it could be coincidence. Still, I'll be going back, too!
  • @mrstmoose good luck!

@rennie1108 I think it’s working... I never really knew what to think but he’s working on ‘lifting up’ my spleen or something. Either way, apparently I had a lot of spleen related issues and those have been clearing up! So I’m just hoping to move this placenta... fingers crossed!!!
  • That's great news, congrats!!

  • Yay @jessicaschafer8! That's awesome news!

  • I found out at 20 weeks I had Low Lying placenta it was about 8mm so little under 1cm away. At 28 week scan it moved 4cm way so I am clear. Woohoo!
