BV in pregnancy

Hello!

I'm new here! Fresh to the idea of being pregnant. I had a positive test last Friday.

I just started seeing a new OB, 10/23 (not knowing I was pregnant, just a new pt visit) and at that appoint my pap came back normal but a second finding "shift in flora suggestive of bacterial vaginosis". I'm not really exhibiting an symptoms... but after some "Google-ing" have thoroughly freaked myself out about it.

I have 1 son who is 8. I experienced a miscarriage 1 year before I became pregnant. I am deathly afraid something bad is going to happen.

Have any of you experience BV in prior pregnancies?

Any thoughts, experiences to share?

Thank you,
B

  • @brookelynb01 I had a history of BV prior to my last pregnancy and also ended up with Group B Strep. It's totally common to have bacteria in the vagina. You can try to resolve it naturally with probiotics, there are some made specifically for pregnancy. If you have Group B Strep present at time of birth (which they test for), you are administered antibiotics when you check-in to the hospital and they just handle labor a little differently.

  • So I just talked to my OB's nurse. She said they will reswab at 2nd trimester to see if still present, and if so, what exactly is present and then start antibx.

I'm just so nervous now, bc I read that there is an increased risk of miscarriage in first trimester.

I'm 35 years old and already at an increased risk.

Dec 18 is my first appt. It cant come soon enough!

  • @brookelynb01 I am sorry you are feeling so stressed about all this. But I think you should try to ignore the 35yo reduced fertility stuff, it's not a sentence for reduced fertility the moment you turn 35. I know plenty of women who have had healthy babies in their late 30s and 40s. I'm 36, I'm not taking that into account at all, and neither are my midwives. If you're concerned, try focusing your energy on eating whole foods, a balanced diet, getting some regular movement each day and take a good prenatal with methylfolate instead of folic acid.

On the BV, invest in some good probiotics, this is the one I plan on buying this week when I run out of my current:

But there are others out there too like Megafood's Baby & Me probiotic.
