Questions Week of 11/11

Questions? Post them here.

Re: Questions Week of 11/11

  • I will post a TMI warning first......

Has anyone gone from being constipated to all of a sudden having diarrhea? Is there no happy medium between having to strain and almost not making it to the toilet??? UGH!!!!

  • @BlondePeanut YES!!! I'm glad you asked because this started happening to me a few days ago. And it happena RIGHT when I wake up. I chalked it up to the change in meds.
  • Same here, right when I wake up I have to run. And today it has happened a few times throughout the day. I was worried I was getting sick....but apparently it could be from our hormones, according to my OB's website we can get a range of GI issues including full blown diarrhea as opposed to just constipation.
  • I am going to preface this with the disclaimer that I am not asking for medical advice, only personal and past experience, and yes, I am following up with my doctor tomorrow.

I was diagnosed with a yeast infection at my pap last week. I’m prone to them, but 90% of the time (this time included, from all I can tell), I am asymptomatic. I started spotting brown over the weekend, the doctor thinks it likely it’s from the yeast infection, so that may be a symptom, but it’s not been verified. I was prescribed Terconazole (the cream) for it. I am one to read the drug warnings, and it’s specifically mentions not taking it in the first trimester of pregnancy unless absolutely medically necessary. From what I’ve read, yeast infections can be uncomfortable for mom, but don’t pose a risk to baby. As I said, aside from the spotting, I am not at all uncomfortable and had no idea anything was going on downstairs until they called me. I am having an ultrasound because of the bleeding tomorrow, so I will be checking in with the doctor before I start it, but I was wondering in the mean time if anyone has any personal, past experience with using this in the first trimester before. I trust my doctor, and after our conversation tomorrow, I will feel better either way, but this was prescribed over the phone when results came back and it just makes me leery because of the specific call out re: the first trimester.

  • @KissMeImScottish Eh... I think I would pass until I spoke with my doctor. Or, depending on who filled the rx, you could call the pharmacist and confirm whether it's okay to take.
  • @KissMeImScottish with DD, I got a yeast infection, but it was in the 2nd trimester. I really didn’t like doing it, but I didn’t want to risk not getting it fixed. I think there’s an oral pill you can take, but I’m unsure if that’s safe to take while pregnant. If you’re unsure about it, trust your gut and hold off until you can see the doctor in person...
  • I’d hold off until talking to your doc. If you’re interested here’s some info from “UpToDate” which is basically the best clinical reference I know of.

@KissMeImScottish At my check up this week I bled when she touched my cervix and said it's likely a bacterial infection but would not prescribe medication till I'm in my second trimester.
  • Thanks, ladies. That’s my inclination as well. Might be feeling differently if I was horribly uncomfortable, but since I didn’t even know it was a thing until they mentioned it, it just makes me very uncomfortable taking a medicine that has such mixed reviews when I’m not even quite 9 weeks. I’ll see what she says tomorrow, but that’s where I’m at right now.

  • For those dealing with constipation issues I’ve found taking the fiber gummies each day to help solve most of those problems. Might want to give it a try.
  • Do you guys have a suggestion of pre natal vitamins to take when dealing with nausea?
  • @wearyfuzzball I take the prenatal gummies from vitafusion (or Target brand, they’re the same). And then also an iron supplement (since gummy vitamins don’t have iron in them).
  • @srscott3 I've been taking the Vitafusion gummies, but the taste is just awful to me now. Maybe I'll try to pick up the Target ones and see if the taste is better. Do you take the iron at a certain time of day so it doesn't upset your stomach?
  • @wearyfuzzball I like the taste of the target ones better! And I really just make sure to take both the prenatal and iron with food. I don’t really take either at the same time each day. The only thing I make sure of is to not take the iron at the same time or right before I have dairy. Calcium can inhibit iron absorption.
  • @srscott3 Thank you, thank you!!! Going to try to pick up some Target gummies today.
  • @wearyfuzzball I second taking them with food. Pre-pregnancy I took my vitamins first thing in the morning while getting ready for work, but now that’s the absolute easiest way to make myself feel like barfing
  • @lmcw Yeah, I've been taking them right after dinner, but it's still been making me pretty nauseous
  • I've been taking my gummies between dinner and bed, closer to bed...kind of like dessert. Then if nausea is going to hit, it's while I'm asleep anyway (theoretically...until my hips declared mutiny this week). Not sure if that inhibits anything to have them not taken DIRECTLY with food, but it's been keeping me from yarfing (and I figure they'd come back up and not do me any good at all then anyway, so some is better than none?). I actually like the Vitafusion ones! I got the Alive ones on a really good sale so picked up a few bottles of those and I miss the Vitafusion...these aren't as good (but the price was right, soooo whatever).
  • I take the One a Day prenatal with DHa supplement. So it’s a tablet with the vitamins and a separate DHA gelcap. Maybe I’m lucky but my prenatals don’t seem to cause me nausea. But I also don’t chew or taste anything. I have found that to be better and I take them right before bed so I don’t think about it.
  • @wearyfuzzball I take my NatureMade +DHA (only cause that’s what the military provides), folic acid and colace right before I get into bed. Prenatals cause me so much nausea, with and without food. I have no issues taking it before bed. Even getting up to pee at night, never any side effects
  • The smarty pants prenatals are a little more pricey but they don’t make me sick and taste better than the vita fusion - better texture too. I’ve been taking slow release “gentle” iron and haven’t had a problem. It’s generic but there is a brand called SlowFE my pharmacist recommended.
  • I alternate between Smarty Pants and the CVS brand gummies (which are surprisingly good in terms of lack of unnecessary chemicals). The Smarty Pants ones are less sweet but you have to eat six of them and some evenings that's just not an option. The CVS are bearable, similar to VitaFusion ones. I also have the Trader Joe's ones (which are exactly the same as the Rainbow Light Prenatal One) but they make me nauseous even when I'm not pregnant so they'll have to wait until second tri...
  • Has anyone found vegan prenatal gummies?
The tablets have all made me vomit so far..
  • @ibreemaboo the Nature's Way Alive gummies are, I believe. All plant-based, including plant-based DHA.
  • @chrssyms I’m also taking the One A Day with DHA (except the single gel capsule instead of the two seperate tablets) and they are the ONLY prenatal that doesn’t make me nauseous.
  • Last pregnancy, gummies made me nauseous taking them during the day, and didn’t have iron or calcium. I’ve been taking tablets before bed that have iron and calcium, and I haven’t felt any extra nausea, and I’ve been so much less tired than last time probably because of the iron.
  • @carleym93 well that's good! they are the first and only prenatal vitamin I have ever tried, so I guess I chose wisely. I can't remember why I chose not to take gummies. There was something different about the absorption or something, but I can't remember and it's probably not a huge deal.
