Re: Ask a STM week of Nov 5

  • @bellebaby221 I agree with @okayestmom12. Although I’d feel stress from that too - I love to get everything organized and ready. But I do think that’s plenty of time if that’s all you’re worried about.

  • When did everyone start really making plans about taking leave? Like picking the date and such?

@hnbergeron I wont pick a date, as I'll work until my Dr says I cant, or Im in labor(I have a desk job I can WFH if needed). I plan to start having 30 minute briefs weekly in December to prep my boss and my team to cover my duties that cant be neglected.

@hnbergeron I work as a nurse and I need to apply ahead of time for my leave to have my manager approve it and post my position for relief (I'm Canadian so it's a full year relief); because I'm due Feb 6 I booked some of my shifts off in Jan using holiday time and then applied for my mat leave to start Jan 26, at 38.5 weeks. But thanks to my holiday time I will only have to work up to Jan 10th. If I couldn't use my vacation time I would have applied to start my mat leave at 37 weeks probably, just to be safe.
  • I turned in my leave paperwork a few weeks ago. I put the start date as the day I expect to schedule my c/s since I'm going to work up until then if I can. If that date changes I just have to notify HR.
  • We don’t actually have anything called maternity leave in federal government employment. Obama sent something to congress to make it happen and yeah well, nada was done with it, so anyhow... i will do what I did last time which is give my supers a status memo on any cases I have that I cannot resolve before I go.  And then I will tell them my hard out date of my induction date and if I stop working a few days before then (like last time because my knees gave out basically; not pleasant), I just email them. I’ll have to check in with the timekeeper about what days I will use sick leave or advance annual (because I will have accrued almost none by February) or unpaid (spoiler alert, most of it), as I go, biweekly, but last time I was pretty dilatory about that and my supervisor basically handled by having her use everything I had before it went to unpaid.  I have way less of anything accrued this time because I used it two years ago for DS, so I will need to be more communicative. If I don’t space out advance annual leave and unpaid, alternating, i’ll end up owing them money for my insurance premiums.  What great benefits, right?! ;p
This whole Canadian year off thing sounds dreamy. I should have moved north long ago!
  • @sjnsjnsjn it’s actually 18 months now, but I won’t brag, we are very fortunate. I can’t believe there is nothing for federal government employees

We are allowed under FMLA to take 12 weeks unpaid, if it applies to us (year of employment which it does for me), like anyone in the US who works for an employer of 50 or more.  The messed up thing is there are loads of people to whom even this doesn’t apply and they legally don’t get any unpaid time off to even have their baby.  What a great country!

@lifeislove87-Brag away! Shout it from the hilltops.  It’s how it should be everywhere.
  • Ugh maternity leave! I wish I could take it already lol.  I’m going to try to work as close to having this baby as I can.  I’m not making my year anniversary at my new job so sadly I get zero paid time off but they do allow me to take 6-8 weeks short term disability and then I’m going to take NY paid family leave for at least another 6 weeks.  Both are a fraction of my pay but I would rather have the time off and at least I’ll be getting some pay!

  • Yeah we don’t have actual maternity leave at my school either. And as 10 month employees, we don’t have vacation or sick time to put towards our leave. So fun! Instead we have a short term disability plan we can use for our leave. We get 100% of our pay during those 6 weeks (8 for a csection, up to 13 weeks for extraordinary complications) then have to get approval from our supervisor to take unpaid time off (and then repay insurance premiums during that unpaid time off). I’m hoping to work up until baby is born so I can get the full time off with her - we aren’t able to submit the STD paperwork until a doctor signs off that we’re unable to work (meaning baby is born). I plan to take 2ish weeks unpaid on top of the STD plan.
  • I’ve always worked until I’ve delivered. I’ll do the same with this one unless the MWs tell me otherwise. I do get 12 weeks paid (thank god for working for a tech company with competitive benefits!), but I want to maximize it. I don’t see the point of taking time off before unless it’s for a medical reason - i’d just get bored.

  • I'm planning on working until I deliver, I'm also able to wfh if I am too uncomfortable near the end to make it into the office.  I'll need to call HR and let them know once I'm out, I will have short term disability plus 8 weeks mat leave all at full pay, H also gets 8 weeks paternity leave so that along with family coming to visit will help us put off putting her in day care until August, if needed one of us may take FMLA.
  • I started planning a month or two ago and settled on stopping as of Jan 21 (edd Feb 13). I haven't informed my manager of that yet but I've gotten in contact with HR to figure out what I need to prepare. Officially I have to tell her 4 weeks ahead of time.
  • I’ll be working until I deliver too. Most likely scheduled c/s so will prob take the two days before off to get fully prepped. Hopefully taking 12 weeks. We get 8 short term disability- 60% pay, then have to use PTO for the rest and can do unpaid if needed.
  • This was super helpful!!! I am thinking mid January(EDD 2/18, haha. I'll believe it when he doesn'y come until then ). I am almost 100 percent sure he will be early. I can't take short term disability until the doctor says I can't physically work. That worries me. Being on my feet 9hrs in a restaurant and driving an hour each way on top of my HG has already been brutal. I am hoping to persuade the OB to write me out.  My hubby is supportive because he knows this whole thing has been a crap shoot. makes me feel better hearing everyone's plan. I will have zero accrued time off so that sucks. I could have borrowed time(due to tenure I get 3weeks every year) but when I had to go to only 40hrs it changed my position and I can no longer borrow. A coworker I knew had to go back after a week! I just can't even pretend how unfair that is. Really sucky thing is my schedule is done 1mnth ahead so it is a solid date in January or I am forced to wait till Feb. Plus I work shifts as a solo manager alot so if something happens, I can't leave or risk losing my job. Stupid american maternity leave...
  • Also planning on working until I deliver. I WFH so lucky in that department. I finally applied for FML last week - it snuck up on me and I knew I needed do to it now before I forget again. I’m taking 12 weeks. My employer pays for 6 (they just started Jan of this year!) so that’s nice. I have enough PTO to cover the rest. And STD.
