1st Trimester

Low progesterone

Hi- This is my 4th Pregnancy and I am 36 yrs old. I went in for a for visit at 9 weeks to find out there was an empty sack, doctor said I will probably miscarry. Did blood work to check my hormone levels and they tripled on the second round of blood work, which is a good sign, we did a second ultrasound and there was something there now, measuring at 5w4d, there was a slight heartbeat but I guess too early to detect completely. The bloodwork also detected a low progesterone levels. I’m not what this mean, has anyone had a successful first trimester with low progesterone?

Re: Low progesterone

  • I was in a very similar situation and my doctor prescribed progesterone supplements, which I took orally. I am currently 31 weeks pregnant. I would ask your doctor for some progesterone.

  • Than thank you Katy, I will definitely ask him about it.
  • They should definitely start you on a supplement ASAP. I had a loss in September and blood work showed my progesterone was low. They started me on a supplement and I’m hoping that is going to help sustain my current pregnancy.

Sorry to hear about your loss Nichole. Was this in your first trimester? That’s the most crucial period when you have low progesterone I heard. I am going tomorrow and will ask the dr about the supplement. Wishing you a healthy pregnancy this time around 🤗
  • @ssue4 thank you. Yes, I was only 5 weeks when I lost the last pregnancy. Hopefully the progesterone makes the difference this time. My midwife said she will have me take the supplement through the first trimester. I hope they are able
to do the same for you if you need it!
  • @ssue4, I’ve taken supplements for low progesterone. My OB would always say it can’t hurt. If the pregnancy isn’t viable, it can delay your body knowing and starting that process naturally. But for me, that’s actually a small price for some peace of mind.
  • Thank you, I am going today to the doctor and will ask him for the supplement.
  • I hope so too Nichole, the uncertainty of not knowing what will happen is so overwhelming, let’s hope for the best!
  • Good news ladies, I’m 7 weeks along and there was a beautiful heartbeat. Doctor is not concerned about the low progesterone as he said it’s not too low to be a concern but we still need to keep monitoring to make sure the fetus is growing rapidly 🤗
