I was an attorney in Texas, mostly probate law. Since moving to Chicago I’m a SAHM to DD. In both Texas and Chicago I’ve been a volunteer patient advocate at Rape Crisis.
I have a masters in education (undergrad in linguistics), but work as a Human resources person/academic advisor for the army ROTC. I also work part time at my church coordinating the volunteer schedules for children’s programming.
I think if I had it to do over, I would’ve a data analyst or accountant.
I studied to be a materials engineer specialising in pyrometallurgy, but I wanted to transition to the mining industry so got a role as a process engineer at an alumina refinery (getting alumina out of bauxite) which isn’t bad. I think after this one is born I’ll move back closer to my parents and see if I can get a gig in a gold processing plant.
So many smart mamas here!
I’m a professor of research & public health at a midwifery college (not a midwife though!) and love it. I only teach one day a week and am a SAHM the rest of the time.
I am a real estate agent - particularly a buyer specialist so I work predominantly with buyers and help them find their new home
But my degree and background is Interior Design and Architecture. I specialized in kitchen and bath design and remodeling for 11 years before getting into real estate a few years ago.
Question for moms: Has your career been affected by having children? If so, how?
I know this is a huge topic and women can get judged both for continuing to work and stopping work. But since this is a safe space, I'd love to hear your experiences with both As a first time mom, l have no idea how I will balance the two...just hoping it works out!
@ibreemaboo I think we could have a whole thread dedicated to that alone! I can definitely give you my experiences/thoughts but I don’t want to hijack this one 😊
I had my first child young and was a stay at home mom for about 7 years and then I moved to physical therapy work with patients getting out of rehab and transitioning to home for a few years but I recently got a chance to finish my bachelor's so I'm about to have a biochem degree.
By day I supervise a children’s crisis case management team and at night I’m a psychotherapist in private practice specializing in children and adolescents. I’m involved in the play therapy community and I’m planning on having my play therapy certification in early 2019
We have a smarty pants group going here!! Amazing how many of you do work with children and hospice, tough work and I tip my hat to you. I am an Order to Remittance Specialist for a medical equipment company. We haven’t figured out what we will do when the kiddo is here but my boss is super flexible about working from home.
@wendyann19 I am a counselor as well! I work with a wide variety of clients. I used to work with only children and adolescents, but now I work with adults who have SUD and a mental health diagnosis.
I’m an economist specializing in developing countries. I’m a faculty member at a big university so I teach graduate and undergraduate students but I spend most of my time on research.
DP and I both work as Correctional Officers (I'm an officer and he is a Sergeant) in a male prison. We met when I was moved to Confinement to replace the pregnant woman who was working the officers station.(Now I'm pregnant)lol . Half of my shift has baby's on the way now though(no joke. There's 8 of us with babies coming, I guess there's something in the water lol)😂 We joke and say all of our babies are the next confinement crew ect. I love that my child will have plenty of play dates with my co workers children.
@snjwatts13 i also work in the mental health field on the administrative side educating MHT and physicians about legislation we have here to keep mental health clients well in the community. Thats my M-F gig. Every other chance I have I work at home as a travel agent.
After college I worked in purchasing/sourcing but decided to quit and start my own editing and proofreading business, so I do that from home.
A few months ago I decided to start another business practicing astrology (the irony of something as type A as editing + something as new age as astrology is not lost on me), but this MS makes appearing on video a struggle so my presence has been lacking the past few weeks. Can’t wait for that 2nd trimester boost to throw more energy into the new venture!
I got my degree in psychology and then went on to XR school. I worked my way up and I’m now and MRI tech at an outpatient facility. I love helping people!
Wow, lots of therapists, counselors, and Mental Health staff here. Very interesting! I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist having work experience with children, families and dealing with medical conditions. I currently work for a health insurance company.
@wearyfuzzball hah I started out as a Materials Science engineer, but then I ended up transitioning into project/program management for large technology programs. In the past couple of years I've gotten more into the systems engineering aspects so that I don't have to manage people as much
@chrssyms It just kind of happened with my current job. I've always been in IT, but when I joined my current company last year I ended up joining their cyber security team. It's definitely an interesting (and a little freaky) space!
I'm an RN. I work as a care coordinator in a primary care office. Thankfully we're internal medicine (16+) and and not family practice or pedi. I don't think I could handle sad kid stuff while pregnant. I'm already trying to avoid all of that on social media as much as I can

My background is in process engineering in the biomedical device industry.
Before that, I was a teacher which was probably my favorite job!

I'm an advertising director for a local roofing company, and on the side, just for fun, work with a travel agency planning Disney vacations.
i feel like substance use is a whole other world - you must be one talented lady to work in so many niches
