Moms of multiples

How many of us are on here now? Maybe we should start a check-in? I'd love to hear how other women are handling their twins+ pregnancies because it's already kicking my ass, especially relative to my singleton son!

Re: Moms of multiples

  • Hiya!  MS sickness is kicking my ass too.  I'm also exhausted and having hot flashes!!!  I also think its harder with a toddler running about.  It honestly is preventing me from being active much on the Bump as much of the time that I would be bumping at night after the kiddo is asleep I am sleeping as well so i can hold it together during the day.  Maybe i'm a bit older now too, who knows.

Hoping to become more active after this killer first tri!

  • @merrylea - I hear ya :\ I was attributing my age to the difficulty of this pregnancy but I'm pretty sure it's just the twin thing at this point. I never felt this terrible with my son. Glad I'm not suffering alone lol

  • @madrissima congratulations!! I’m still trying to get over the shock of it myself lol... how far along are you?
  • @wishiwaspreggo thank you, congratulations to you too!! Its a very shocking thing to find out, I'm sure itll take me a while to adjust as well! I'm 12 weeks tomorrow, how about you?
  • @madrissima - I'm 7 weeks 5 days. I know I have twins this early because I did IVF (transferred 2 assuming just 1 would stick - oops). So while I'm not TOO shocked - like, I knew this was a risk for sure - I'm still surprised because my doc said 30% chance of twins when we did the transfer. That seemed like a 70% chance of NOT twins but there you go. It's okay. I wanted 3 kids anyway and I'm actually really glad I will have two at once so I don't have to do the baby/toddler thing again when I'm 40+. I am worried about the pregnancy. I'm on a twins forum and the tales of woe and belly pics are making me panic but I remind myself it's temporary and the outcome will be worth it.

Do you know if yours are identical or fraternal yet? Mine are definitely fraternal. They're spaced far apart and each have their own amniotic sac and placenta.
  • @sac276 - the symptoms are definitely more brutal with twins, huh? I already have round ligament pain and I have nausea and fatigue that I never had with my son! I breezed through 1st trimester during my last pregnancy but not so much this time! It's not horrible but I feel like I'm hungover all the time. To add insult to injury I caught a cold too. I'm having a very hard time remaining productive, cheerful, and alert. I like to think I'm normally an awesome mom but I've been giving my son the iPad right when I get home from work so I can rest on the couch unbothered :\ I'm hoping to be back to being a more attentive mother when this cold goes away. iPad time isn't so bad when it's 20-30 minutes but I've been letting him play on it for hours :grimace:
  • I hope y’all don’t think I’m stalking you — I’m having a singleton but have twins who are 21 months old. I’m miserable right now but it is NOTHING compared to first trimester with twins.  Even with two toddlers to chase around this time. I bow down to you all.  It gets better!

Also @wishiwaspreggo a crazy twin fact they never tell you is that a ton of di/di twins are identical!  More likely than not yours are fraternal though.  Some of my friends have even done DNA tests to be sure bc their twins look so much alike.  Mine are obviously fraternal and you could even tell on the ultrasounds towards the end of my pregnancy that their faces didn’t look alike at all.
  • @anonellis - you're very welcome to post on this board! A veteran's perspective would be super helpful IMHO. I was really freaked out by the twins thing at first but it is growing on me. Especially if I get b/g :) A boy for my son to have a brother and a girl for me and my wife to experience raising a daughter! Thank you for the assurance that it gets better. I am so fogged out right now it's not even funny. My witching hour has started (3 pm to 8 pm is when my nausea and fatigue hit hardest).
Yeah, I saw on my Facebook forum that there was a woman who is convinced her daughters are identical. I looked at the pictures and I thinks he's right. She's gonna get them tested apparently. I'm fairly confident mine are di/di considering how I conceived them lol ;) both embryos were 4AA (best quality with a high implantation rate). I did 2 because of my age (36). I was afraid one of them would be a dud but they're both nice and strong so far.
  • @wishiwaspreggo haha wow! Regardless of knowing the chances in advance, it's still a lot to wrap your head around!

I am a bit worried as well -- youre right, we will probably get huge!! The most worrying part for me is after pregnancy - im new to parenting and this seems like a bit of a trial by fire!! Also my twins are identical and the radiologist told me this comes with some additional risks, but I am just trusting in my OB and trying to stay relaxed... this could be my only pregnancy so I should try to enjoy it!

On the other hand it was a bit of a relief to find out in that this pregnancy has been kicking my ass, and it's some comfort to know maybe its because there are two in there instead of one! I always had this idea that I would be a super strong pregnant lady, but I'm finding even basic tasks to be challenging, like talking without losing my breath lol!

@anonellis please stick around and share your wisdom!
  • @madrissima - The loss of breath was one of my first suspicions I have two instead of one. I literally can't walk at a normal pace up a slight incline without panting as if I was jogging. I got to my car walking from my office to the parking lot and I was sitting at the wheel trying to catch my breath. I'm not a fitness queen by any means but I'm plenty strong and can walk for hours on end without a problem generally.
I actually think you're at an advantage starting with 2 rather than going from 1 to 3 overnight! I'm freaking out because I'll have a preschooler to deal with on top of 2 babies to care for. You won't have anything else to compare it to (much like pregnancy). You're gonna do just fine :) especially if you have plenty of support. We're going to move closer to my parents in a year or so and I'm hoping they'll help me with the kids. My FIL and BIL live in that area too so we'll have plenty of family, not to mention my high school friends who are still there. I'm grateful I didn't move too far to begin with and have a chance to get back up there again.
  • @wishiwaspreggo we are going to have 3 under two. I’m not sure if we are going to make it out alive.

As a side note, we have a follow up ultrasound and appt in about an hour. I am anxious as baby B was tracking behind on the last one. Keep your fingers crossed for me ladies.

  • @merrylea - Oh my, 3 kids under two!!! My first will be 4 by the time these babies are born. You're gonna do great, though, we all adjust to our circumstances!
I'll  be thinking of you at your follow-up ultrasound :) hope both babies are growing nice and strong!
  • I have four boys including twins my twins are five I have a son that just turned 8 and another son that is 12 this is number 6 if you need any support or have questions I'm a veteran twin mom I can totally help
  • @merrylea just curious to hear how your ultrasound went! If you updated elsewhere apologies :) been thinking of you!
  • Lurking, not a multiples mom, but @merrylea hope everything went well at your appointment ♥️
  • Thank you for asking @wishiwaspreggo and @eatinwatermelonseeds and sorry I’ve been MIA. I’m parenting solo this weekend and these symptoms are kicking my butt. No energy to do anothing other than absolute necessities!

Ultrasound was good. Both babies grew, both had good heartbeats, and I got to see baby A wiggling around! They still don’t see a separation between the two so I will get a referral to a perinatologist this week for yet another ultrasound. I was hopeful after this one and just trying to take it one step at a time.

Well...what did your doctor say? You can always call your OB nurse line and ask them. Medical advice should be given by medical professionals, not internet strangers.

  • Agree with @sleepy33 (can’t tag the original poster bc of the long name).  There are lots of standard protocols they generally do for people pregnant with multiples/otherwise at risk for preeclampsia but i have no idea whether that BP is high or what to do about it if it is.

Never hesitate to call your OB’s office if you have a question in between appointments.  No matter how crazy/paranoid you might feel you’re being, I’m sure they’ve dealt with worse.
  • I just got back from a follow up ultrasound to confirm twins are mono/di, which they are. My OB also let me know that I am a positive risk for DS due to blood work. She did say bloodwork is less reliable for twins, and the ultrasound part all looked good. Has any other twin mom experienced this? We will be going on to NIPT or amnio from here, but still a bit unsettling to get the positive risk.

We also talked all about how the twins sharing the placenta increases risks for them, and twin pregnancy increases all kinds of risks to do with pregnancy. I've been reading about all this stuff online for the past week, but it was different to hear it from the doctor! How are all of you dealing with this? The extra appointments, increased testing etc?

Also @merrylea does this mean your twins are mono/mono? Wishing you luck with your follow up ultrasound!
  • Hi ladies went to my ob and was sent right in to ER. Babies are fine but said I have hypertension/ Tachycardia which is odd as my numbers are fluctuating. All my other came back normal so they were unsure what is really going on. I will need to follow up with my Ob for further evaluation. Thanks all ♡♡
  • @madrissima - sorry for the delay.  The app doesn't give you notifications when you've been tagged!  They are still not sure yet about the Mono/Mono.  As of the ultrasound at 10 weeks they could not find a barrier.  I have another ultrasound at 12w 3d (NT) with the specialized perinatal group so hopefully they see something then. Also, I am getting the NIPT testing done at that time.  They also warned me that the NIPT isn't as accurate for twins.  All of this is just screening though, and really the only way to be sure would be to get the amnio.

I don't know about you guys, but i feel like we are just taking one day, one appt at a time.  That's all we can do!

  • Hey ladies! I was just curious if anyone has been having Braxton Hicks worse with twins than single pregnancy? I’m 16 weeks and my doctor said they are normal, but i feel like my belly is always tightening and I’m just a worrier. I wanted to see if it was just me or other twin moms experiencing the same thing!!
  • @sac276 - It's normal. The same thing is happening to me too (15 weeks). It happened a lot with my first as well. It's just the uterus flexing its muscles in preparation for the big day ;) but unless it goes beyond tightening and extends into pain I wouldn't worry about it!
  • I’m 20 weeks with Mono/Di girls and the Braxton Hicks have been getting me too. I was really worried but my doctor said it’s totally fine and normal, as long as your cervix isn’t getting any smaller and they aren’t turning painful and becoming a pattern. Just make sure to stay hydrated and rest when you can! I don’t know about your guys, but I’m exhausted and everything takes a lot of energy. We can do this!
