Infertility

How many transfers do you try?

I am the lucky mother of a beautiful 2yo from IVF. We have unexplained infertility and I got pregnant the first transfer. I truly realize how lucky that is.

Now we are going for baby #2. I did a FET of the one embryo left from my first cycle but it didn’t take. Although it was a good quality day 5 blast, it was early in development. We just did a new atom cycle, and while we had a somewhat low fertilization rate, we ended up with 5 great quality 5 day blasts. We just transferred one on a fresh cycle and again it didn’t take. So now we have 4 frozens.

I feel discouraged and nervous about how much I want to put my body through. How many times do most people try before giving up? Also, has anyone thought of working with a surrogate? Thanks in advance

Re: How many transfers do you try?

  • We did 3 rounds of ivf and 7 embryo transfers before being successful. We have 8 embryos left and I had planned on transferring all of them before moving on. I think it really just depends on the person and what they’re comfortable with.

  • We're also one of those unexplaineds who got lucky with our first transfer. I think most people try several rounds or more before success. It really depends on where you feel like your limit is -- emotionally, financially. Multi transfers seem like they would be very taxing emotionally. I know some people who have done 8+ transfers before either moving on to something else or having success.

  • Thank you both. I know it’s a very personal thing. Just hard to feel there can be such a long road ahead. And I’m a lot more tired this time!
