Evening Primrose Oil

sorry if there is already a post about this...I couldn’t find it if there was.

Does anyone have experience taking EPO in preparation for birth? I read it was a natural blood thinner and I’m on aspirin because I had preeclampsia with DS. Wondering if that’s safe.  I would like to try it this time, but interested about hearing others’ experiences.

Re: Evening Primrose Oil

  • I used it (vaginally) both times with my kids and gave birth within 24 hours.   I'd only use it past 37/38 weeks... I used it 38+6.  I think your body has to be ready and it will just jumpstart labor.  I've heard other use it orally, but I have zero experience with that.

My experience I inserted in the AM, irregular mild contractions started around noon.  I went out for lunch and was making childcare arrangements by 4pm.  Still walking talking.  I knew they were inconsistent so I went home to rest and get through the bearable part.  Took a nap, headed to the hospital once we had 4-1-1 around midnight.  5cm dilated when I checked in.  Baby boy born around 9am.

  • I also used it vaginally the last three weeks.  I don't think it had any effect, but it gave me a microscopic feeling of being in control of things, so i think in that sense, it was helpful.
  • I would definitely ask your doctor/midwife before adding it. Aspirin is already a blood thinner, so if EPO is as well you don’t want to compound that as it could make you more prone to a PPH.

  • @mrsradzik what week did you start?
  • I'm very tempted to try PRO this time lol. My first was born at 39 weeks. This time I'm looking at induction by 39 anyways.

  • I started at week 37
  • @mrsradzik that’s what timing I hear is best but I hear it’s most effective inserted vaginally. Did you do orally or vaginally?
  • I inserted In my vagina before bed every night.
  • @mrsradzik such a bummer. I’m sorry it didn’t work for you! Are you going to try again? I’m willing try anything!
