Determining the Sex at 12 weeks

I know that several of us have had a 12 week scan. I’m wondering if any techs/doctors made a sex prediction.

How accurately can sex be predicted at this stage?

I was told with my first two that the sex cannot be determined at this stage, but today was told, with 90% certainty what I was having.

Re: Determining the Sex at 12 weeks

  • Not that accurate at this point...maybe if it’s a boy and legs are spread wide lol I will say they told me “probably a boy” at 13 weeks with DS and sure enough he came out a boy lo

  • I worked in the radiology department at our hospital for years and they wouldn't even make a guess until at least 16 weeks. I haven't worked there for two years so maybe things have changed but it seems way to early to me.

I asked Dr Google when you can see the difference between sex organs and found this: “The genital ridge starts lengthening around week 9 to form the penis; however, the penis and clitoris actually remain the same size until about 14 weeks.”

I doubt it’s possible to see at a 12 week US. What reasoning or explanation did your dr/tech give for determining the sex?

  • Oh I’ve heard of lots of people being told that early, but the accuracy wasn’t great.

@grebretso I asked her if she could tell, she got a rump shot and said, without doubt, that our baby is what she said it is. The doctor concurred. can you send me that link, I want to show my husband. This prediction seems off to me.

Edited: deleted the sex, not ready to share.

@ThePax89 How odd! I would have guessed they said it was a boy, since the presence of a lil wiener makes it hard to dispute. The absence of one that early though..? I wouldn’t read too much into it.

Google “fetal sex development” and “fetal gender development”, there are tons of articles and they all say the same thing.

  • My husband asked my tech at my 12 wk US yesterday, and the answer was “it is too early to tell”
  • @ThePax89 I would not bank on it especially with a female guess, personally. Maaaaybe if they had said boy. FWIW at 19 weeks my sister was told with her last that she was definitely having a girl andddd it was a boy. Part of why we’re staying team green lol.
  • @megpants209 god what an ego killer for that little dude ...
  • 13 weeks and 3 days way the earliest we found out and it was and it was a full frontal view
  • @megpants209 I wouldn’t be convinced either way.

Group consensus...50% chance of determining sex accurately. Haha.

@BourbonBiscuits Right?! My sister is also VERY girly so everything was pink. Lesson 2 - don’t wash things...
  • I had a friend told at 14 weeks that she was 100% having a girl by her US tech. She went in for her anatomy scan at 20 weeks and found out she was definitely having a little boy. The earliest I’ve been told is 16 weeks. Before that range, a penis could look just like a vagina. I’m pretty surprised even the OB told you that. That’s kind of incredible.
  • From my husband's embryology textbook (which he busted out from storage as soon as we got the bfp). Figures in the third picture. Excuse the page break (paragraph cont. in picture 2).

  • My take is that the differences are visible this early, but only if you probably used a scope or in a surgical setting. But the development is just so small still that it'd be really difficult to determine with a run of the mill us machine.

Just like you can see the brush strokes on a painting up-close and in-person, but can't really see them in a photo of the same painting from a few feet away.
  • @hannahbananas11 I agree. I wouldn’t put the stats any higher than that!!!!!
  • Either way, it's fun to guess! Plus, my DH had a good laugh when I showed him my nerdtastic post. LOLOL
  • What about the nub theory? I asked our sonographer at our 12 week appt. and she made a prediction for our twins and said it’s 70 % accuracy. I still don’t really know if I believe it, but either way we will find out in a week and a half with the NIPT results.
  • @hlthybabies2019 it seems like the nub theory has some validity to it. Our tech and doctor looked at the babes undercarriage and assessed that way. Seems fishy to me.
  • Our tech used the nub theory and said she was 70% sure. I told her I was getting the blood work so I wouldn't be relying simply on her prediction. Results should be in this week or next, interested to see if she was right- it's the opposite of my "gut feeling"
