Progesterone Suppository Side Effects

My doctor has me on progesterone twice a day following our IUI. This is our first IUI.

Of all the meds so far, I've found the side effects from this the hardest.
Tired, nodding off, vaginal burning, distracted, feel high at times, two hours after I take it my sinuses stuff right up (wth?), constipation, head aches, easy crying, cramping, and generally irritable. I have at least a week and a half to go on it.

Has anyone else had side effects from progesterone? I appreciate you listening. I'm sure there are drugs with even worse side effects for fertility treatments. I'm very sensitive to medications and I'm nervous that if we have to go to IVF, I'll have bad reactions based on how the IUI drugs have made me feel.

The progesterone did that to me too. A lot of early pregnancy symptoms right away so I wasn’t sure what was what, constipation, gas (so bad), vaginal irritation/sensitivity. All sounds about right to me what you are experiencing.

  • I get tons of symptoms from the suppositories, too. It sucks. Taking progesterone basically mimics all my early pregnancy symptoms so in addition to being very uncomfortable it messes with my mind big time. That being said, if your treatments work and you get KU the symptoms are well worth the outcome. Hang in there and good luck!

Progesterone gave me the worst symptoms. Head aches, moody, gas, bloating, cramps, sore boobs, super tired, and all these are also early pregnancy symptopms so it messes with your head. The vaginal discharge was especially gross.
It's the hormone I hate the most when it comes to IF treatments.

All that said, everything is temporary and that's a comforting thought.
  • Same! Progesterone suppositories were the worst, as far as side effects. Especially the bloating and the tiredness. And *super* wild, crazy dreams. It mimics pregnancy for sure, so when you get BFP, expect it to intensify after week 7 or so, but mine stopped after week 11. Best of luck and baby dust!!

  • The progesterone is tearing me up this round.  Headaches, bloat, dreams and a floaty feeling.  Didn't bother me nearly this bad my last round.

  • @ChristenMA83 That's how mine has been my last few rounds and I don't see it letting up   Hopefully you're on the sunny side of your journey and won't have to deal with it but for a few more weeks. Also, LOVE your quote <3

  • I’m getting headache and stuffy nose ( not all day just some parts of day) which is weird and feeling hot trouble sleeping
  • Side effects of progesterone suppositories following IUI are not uncommon. Symptoms like fatigue, vaginal discomfort, sinus congestion, and mood changes can occur. It's essential to discuss these concerns with your doctor, who can adjust the dosage or explore alternative options if necessary.
