DS2 is 4 and obsessed with board games (mostly Connect 4 and Star Wars Trouble). And he wants someone to play with him. All. The. Time. It’s great that it keeps him busy, isn’t screen time, helps with counting etc, but OMG I’m so done playing the damn games with him.
Perfect! We’re the jerk parents who’ve never really let our kids win. We figure they need to learn to lose gracefully and be good sports (or maybe DH and I are just stupid competitive...)
@jennybean80 YAS! I'm all for teaching people how to gracefully lose. The "Fun Fair Positive Soccer" club in my area is infuriating to me because they don't keep score. If kids don't know how to lose, what happens when they don't get their way when they are older? Maybe this belongs in UO....
We're supposed to go to a wedding on Sunday and we might back out last min. This is a faux pas that I said I would never commit but I'm so tired, headachey, and uncomfortable, plus its two hours away. Ugh, I'll just send twice the gift we were planning on giving.....
I’m laying in bed watching police department lip sync challenge videos on FB while Paw Patrol is parenting for me and my kids eat the bag of birthday cake popcorn we got this past weekend. I give zero fucks today.
In early May I got a call from social services (I guess to answer questions about a student) and the message was delivered to me via administration at work. I meant to call. And then life happened. I went to put in a grocery list on my notes app and see 'call so and so'.
I've decided that days where I can walk into the bathroom at work and not have to hold my breath because my coworkers seem to be in a constant state of pooping and our dipshit intern isn't here to drink all the water and leave the brita empty in the fridge are simply the best days. Maybe I just shouldn't be around people.
I may have peeked at my BBB registry to see what was purchased...joked with DH and said "wouldn't that be funny if someone bought the snot sucker". yep, someone has bought the snot sucker. and some other health stuff. they must be trying to do a cute little gift basket/first aid kit with it because IMO that's some boring shit to give lol.
eta: so i checked the amazon registry and another health type item was purchased. I'M SO BAD lol
Yay for you people who don’t let your kids win! That’s one thing I’ve said I’d never do. I’ll teach them all the tricks and how to win but I won’t “let” them! I am super competitive though..games were a huge thing in my family and the first time I beat my dad at connect 4 was one of the biggest days of my life! Next to beating my grandma at dominos of course. She was the domino queen!
@jemmerjams - The only “pretty” thing I usually give at baby showers is flannel receiving blankets, and I use those in place of wrapping paper. I try to give things I think people will use, but might not get - often things like plates and flatware for older babies, or generic onesies for hanging around the house.
SS would get so upset when he lost. I think it's good to teach kids how to lose gracefully. We always use it as a learning moment. My kid will not be the one throwing a hissy fit because they didn't win something.
I loved the gifts that I received that weren’t the typical pretty ones. My standard shower gift (aside from a couple of things for the baby) is a postpartum gift basket for mom - typical postpartum recovery stuff plus some snacks, bubble bath, personalized water bottle, that kind of thing. One mom at my shower gave me that and it was honestly one of my favorite gifts - I really appreciated that she thought of me as well.
I like to go on the registry and buy gifts in a theme. I find something I like and then buy similar items (all bath, all safety, all feeding related). I then try to add in a baby book or something "fun" like a onsie.
I don’t let the kids win... they usually do anyway. I will take it a little easy on them, especially if it’s a new game, but not to the point that they win, just to the point that they don’t lose so bad that they stop wanting to play. I still try to keep it fun for them. It doesn’t take long for them to get it enough for me to stop doing that though.
I give boring, useful gifts. I used to make blankets to go with the boring stuff, but don’t really have the time for that anymore.
I’m super competitive and I think it’s becausr I was sent to a camp for a little while where everything ended in a tie. It made me want to make sure everyone knew I had won even if the official result was tie.
We are team don’t let the kid win. Hopefully they will be have a healthier relationship to competition than I do.
I haven’t been to the dentist in 3 years, and pretty much unless there’s tooth pain I don’t ever plan on going. I absolutely hate cleanings. I can brush my teeth just fine on my own, thanks.
Three of my coworkers are leaving (1 is leaving the company and 2 are moving to a different location). I’m angry because they aren’t replacing them right away and I have to make the schedule which is impossible to fill with no people. So my FFFC would be that there’s one lady who I’d love to see get fired even though it would leave us even shorter, it’s not like she does any work anyway.
Per our UO convo yesterday. I have no clue how to properly apply eyeliner. I used to wear it when I was like 14/15 because it was the goth kid too much eyeliner look, but I haven’t used it since. My mother bought me some for my birthday (why?) and I have no idea how to use it.
As far as baby shower gifts, my favorite was the breastfeeding survival kit a mom friend made me!
Don't get me wrong, useful gifts (that i registered for) are so much better than the frilly pink onesies I'm sure to get that I didn't want lol. I guess I'm pleasantly surprised that I won't be getting all clothes! Practicality wins!
@jemmerjams Practicality definitely wins. At our first shower we got mostly clothes and stuffed animals! I think baby boy currently has 7 stuffed elephants (which thankfully is part of our nursery theme) but what am I going to do with 7 of them!?!?
@knottieamusements I really like the idea of using a blanket as the wrapping paper. I think I’m going to try that for the two upcoming baby showers I’m going to in July and August.
Blast already has two elephants, and we haven’t even done a shower yet. I figure elephants are herd animals anyway.
As for using receiving blankets for wrapping - I’ve run into two... umm... complications. First is that sometimes wrapping is a challenge. I usually try to avoid using tape, and I ise them even for smaller items. Second is that occasionally parents don’t realize that it is a wrapped gift- they just think it is a bundle of blankets. When that happens, I don’t sweat it and just prompt them to open it because there is stuff inside.
@DunkinDecaf Me too, only it’s been closer to 10-15 years. I lost my insurance and then when I got insurance I didn’t have a dentist and the years just keep flying by. My kid’s dentist did give me the name of a couple good dentists in our area about 1.5 years ago & she took a look in my mouth (not in the chair or anything, but I mentioned something and she was like open up and checked it right there in the hallway, which was nice of her). Now I just need to actually call one of the dentists she recommended... maybe after baby is born.
AFM - since my kids started swim lessons in June, their shower frequency has dropped to 1 day/week... the day they have lessons because the chlorine makes one get a lot of knots in his hair. MH mentioned showers tonight for them, so I think he may have noticed I’m not doing it anymore.
