1st Trimester

pregnant, ovarian cyst, or something else??

edited July 2018 in 1st Trimester
Help - I’m driving myself crazy. I took both an ovulation test and pregnancy test yesterday and they were both positive. Of course, i took a second pregnancy test and it was still positive. This would put me at 4w 5d as i know the exact conception date (we havent been getting too busy lately, part of what makes this so unbelievable). I looked this up and saw that OPKs will register positive when pregnant as they cant differentiate between LH and HCg. But im just super anxious that it may be a false positive. My cycle before this month was 50 days so I didn’t think I was regular enough to ovulate. i also found that ovarian cysts (which ive had in the past) and even lexapro that im on could give a positive pregnancy test!?! My confirmation of pregnancy appointment isnt until July 17th so im going crazy! I feel like im experiencing some symptoms for sure, but cyst symptoms are similar. I guess no one can do anything until my appointment but if no advice, maybe some encouraging words??

  • If you had a positive test, you're pregnant. There are rare cases when it might be a false positive, but that is so so rare. Unfortunately  there's no way to know what will happen with the pregnancy, so try not to worry about miscarriage. And I'm not sure what you mean by a "true pregnancy." Miscarriages only happen in true pregnancies. Saying that a miscarriage is not a true pregnancy is really incredibly hurtful to those of us who have had miscarriages.

Yes, OPKs will turn positive if you're pregnant, too.

  • I wasn’t calling referring to miscarriages, I was referring to it being a false positive.
  • You could call your doctor’s office and explain your concerns.  They should be able to tell you which circumstances would cause a false positive (although as others have said, it’s pretty darn rare).  Maybe they could have you do a set of blood draws for confirmation of appropriately-rising Hcg.  In any case, it’s pretty likely you’re really, truly pregnant if you’re testing positive with a urine test.  Not sure what you mean by the “second child” thing; people experience losses or healthy pregnancies regardless of the # of pregnancies they’ve had or children they have.
Do your best not to worry!  I know it’s hard—I’ve been there, too!

  • When I took my first pregnancy test I also took an ovulation test because I was unsure I had even ovulated at that point. They both turned positive. I immediately texted a photo to my friend who is a doctor who informed me I was pregnant. If you're pregnant you will also turn ovulation tests.
I didn't believe her and I dipped a test in water to see if it turned. AND I went and got a digital that night to confirm. I now have an almost 2 year old son.
    Congrats!
