Does anyone currently have the owlet or planning on getting one? Is there a less expensive comparable option?
There are no CDC or APA approved baby sleep monitors. I think they can do more harm than good by increasing parent stress levels with false positives.

@galactickates I do not have an owlet or alternative, but I was given the snuza for my baby shower by one of Hs cousins who used it with her LOs and said it saved her from so much anxiety. I thought I would love the idea, but never ended up taking it out of the box. Eventually I returned it. When BRU was initially going out of business I had an opportunity to snag an owlet 2 for $100 and I didn’t go for it. I wasn’t pregnant at the time but knew I wanted #2 eventually. But I figured since I survived without one with DD, I probably can again. I know people who have used them and said it really alleviated their anxiety, and others who said it has made it worse.

The more i'm reading about them i'm not sure.  I was reading a lot of complaints about the alarm going off because of movement and the app.

@galactickates those are some of the mixed reviews I’ve read. But people I know IRL who used them consistently said they rarely if ever got a false alarm. Most people I know who bought them just didn’t end up using them because despite what they initially thought, they didn’t feel they needed it.

@pttomato FWIW, DD's pedi said she doesnt recommend cutting out dairy unless/until the new baby shows signs of the intolerance (for DD, she started having blood in her diapers around 3 weeks old). She said that if I cut it out and then the baby doesn't actually have the intolerance, when I introduce it back in, it could lead to a true milk allergy. I plan to ask the OB and the LC closer to due date, but just wanted to share.

@galactickates I’m also interested in the owlet but the reviews on Amazon are pretty terrible. One of my cousins died of SIDS in the late 80s so I’m sure my brain will be worried about that more than I should be. Hopefully there is a better model or a competitor that enters the market in the next six months.

FWIW, I was terrified of SIDS at first wit DD, but our video monitor (Infant Optics) is clear and I spent a lot of time looking at it watching for her back or chest to rise/fall with her breathing. For the first 4 months she slept in the Rock N Play at night, then from month 4-6 she slept in the Pack N Play in our room, then months 6+ she was in her crib in her room. I found out that, thanks to hormones, I woke up from EVERY little groan or cough from her, which gave me relief.
