Babymoon locations and timing

Anyone planning a babymoon during this pregnancy, or have you taken one in the past? Where? And how far along in the pregnancy is a “good” time to go? This is our first baby so we figure we should go somewhere before our LO arrives.

Re: Babymoon locations and timing

  • Nope. I never did and it's personally not my style to go on a special vacation just because in a few months you'll be parents. Vacations don't end when a baby arrives.

  • DH and I aren't planning a babymoon, but we are going on our one year anniversary trip in September. We want to take advantage of not having any kids while we can. We know that once we have a baby, vacations will look totally different, so we're excited to take some "us" time.

  • No babymoon for us. We never even went on a honeymoon. Lol.

  • We don't have an explicit babymoon planned. My in-laws recently moved out to California and we are planning to visit them regardless, but I might try to convince my husband to go out to the beach for a night or two just the two of us to have a little babymoon-light (and not at all because a week staying in a 2 bedroom apartment with my inlaws is already giving me anxiety...). It's also probably going to change our timing. Where we originally were thinking of going late fall/early winter we'll probably end up going in September or October so I'm not super uncomfortable on the flight from Boston.

I'm not in the U.S. so is someone able to give an update on the Florida Zika threat? I've looked online and got conflicting info. DH has a business trip planned to the Destin area in the early fall and he wants me to tag along so we can turn it into a little babymoon getaway. I'd love to go with him as it will likely be our only time away just the two of us for years after LO comes (we don't have family support to watch our kids), but obvi the hype around zika is concerning.

  • We aren’t going to take a babymoon. Partly because we have 3 OOT weddings between now and this time next year, and partly because I want DH and I to take a long weekend for our 10 year Anniversary next summer. I’d feel guilty taking two “parents only” trips in the same year.

As for locations, it really depends on your personal style. If we took one we would likely go to Savannah or New Orleans. Maybe even Washington DC. Somewhere with historical stuff to browse.

  • No babymoon.  We'll get to go out to dinner just the two of us for our anniversary in August.  Does that count?  :D:p:#
  • We are planning to take a child-free weekend in October for our anniversary. After our last trip when DD was 11 months DH never wants to travel with her again, so we haven't gone anywhere in awhile.

  • We took a babymoon with our first to Myrtle Beach when I was around 24-25 weeks. It was a lot of fun to float around the lazy river at the hotel.  Second trimester is always better for me so it is more enjoyable to travel and eat without feeling so nauseas. Everyone varies though so it is really up to the individual. We don't take them anymore though, we just take vacations and we bring the kiddos. I enjoyed doing a babymoon with my first though and it is nice to look back on the memories.

@tosh24, I live about an hour from the Destin area. You should definitely go and the beaches are beautiful.

  • We did a 4-day 3-night trip to Chicago when I was 20 weeks pregnant with DS. Mostly because we wanted to take a trip, but we called it our babymoon. We splurged a little on a nice hotel on the river. It was amazing.

With my second, we were already scheduled to go to Asheville in the summer for a wedding so we just added two extra days to the end for a babymoon. I was 25 weeks.

This time around we have two kids which makes it tougher, plus our year is pretty full up with various trips and time off we’re already taking for weddings and stuff. Funny enough for one of those we already were planning to go to Chicago the weekend the Patriots play there so maybe we’ll do Chicago babymoon part II while we’re there

@furmama1986 @jackiemxoxo Thanks, ladies! That makes me feel better about going. DH sent me a link to the resort and I definitely do not want to pass this one up! The beach looks amazing!

  • @snackheart I've always wanted to go to Chicago. Boston is my favorite U.S. city, but I feel like Chicago could easily earn that title after a visit. Did you like the city?

That’s funny because we actually live in Boston! I had always wanted to go to Chicago and now I can’t recommend it enough. We went in August (2014) and it was really just a ton of fun. There is so much to see and the food was phenomenal.

Everyone recommended the architectural boat tour to us and even though it didn’t sound like something we’d be into, we went for it and were so glad we did. It’ll make you fall in love with the place. I’m so excited to go back this fall!

For 4 years I had a client in Chicago and the food there is ALWAYS good! And there’s so much to see! Chicago is fantastic!
  • Our 5 yr anniversary falls at the end of my first trimester. We are going back to the lake cabin where we had our honeymoon!
  • @we always take our vacation in the fall because of DHs work schedule. We were thinking of visiting relatives in Michigan. If we fly we will have to be careful of the dates because towards mid October I will be 28 weeks and I think that's cut off for most airlines. But I don't want to be in the car 24 hours either. So maybe we will do something more local.
  • @gorgeousariel the cut off is definitely later than that so don’t worry! I think it’s actually 38 weeks on some and 36 on others. Usually your insurance will have a policy as well. Mine was 36 weeks. I had to fly at 33 weeks with my first pregnancy so I had to find all this info lol
  • Thanks ladies! We’re thinking about visiting Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks around 21-22 weeks. We found a cabin we can rent nearby. Figure we’ll play it by ear and not have any particular agenda to stick to seeing as I’m FTM and have no idea what to expect at 21-22 weeks along. But hoping to have a little more energy!

Not a baby moon, but we are going on vacation with H’s family at the end of August to Massanutten Resort in the mountains of VA. Hoping it’s not too early to see the leaves change!

@gorgeousariel ^this. We flew to Indianapolis when I was 32 weeks with my first. Most of the airlines I researched cut it off at 38 weeks, though a few say 36 like @beachmama14 said.

Keep in mind that your healthcare provider may have his/her own cutoffs for you. My OB/GYN says no air travel after 34 weeks (so I just made it for the Indy trip!).

I'm not as familiar with that part of the state, but I'd be really surprised if any leaves have started to change in August. August in Virginia is usually still very hot and humid.

  • We are planning something in October. We haven't decided where yet but it will be two weeks. We're thinking maybe Bermuda or Ireland.

  • DH and I were just in Honolulu with our toddler. He goes, “wow, I see so many pregnant women everywhere!” I asked him if we can come back for a babymoon and he said, “we’ll see.”

That answer quickly turned into a “hell no” when we found out I was pregnant a few weeks ago. $$$$$$$$

We’ll probably go somewhere low key and definitely not Hawaii!

I would love to go on a baby moon but I don’t think it’s in the cards for us. We are allocating lots of our spare $ toward projects around the house & I also want to save as much PTO as I can. My parents took DD overnight under “emergency” circumstances once when DH and I both got norovirus & decided that constant vomiting and diarrhea severely limited our ability to watch a 7 month old. Other than that we haven’t had a full night to ourselves lol. So, even if we don’t take a weekend away, I’d like to her have an overnight or two with them so we can have the house to ourselves and sleep in a couple times ;)

we are 2 & done & I’m thinking that when I’m done nursing this baby I’ll be ready for a little parents only getaway!

  • We have a few long weekend trips planned in September for things like weddings, but no baby moon plans in the works at the moment. There's no way I could take more than a long weekend off of work until November. I'm due January 5th, so November might be a little late for any big trip.  Maybe something local, within a few hours drive of us.

  • We’re going to DH’s friend’s wedding in August. In Michigan. Not exactly my ideal travel destination, but at least it’s somewhere new and we’re going kid free. I’m hoping for maybe a night away in the fall. Maybe NYC or something. We’ve been wanting to go see a show.

Were planning on taking a quick 2 night trip to Vegas this summer. I plan on laying by the pool and eating the whole time.

Were also planning on taking ds to Destin, FL as a last vacation as just the 3 of us.
  • We had a few family vacations already planned this summer and one in October is just for my husband and I for the week, and we will be leaving DS at home with grandparents. So I guess that can be our un official baby moon getaway.

We had our annual Disney trip planned the end of January that we take every year, but I haven’t broken it to my DS we woll probably have to skip it this year and I don’t do Disney during peak season so that’s not even an option
  • @galactickates Yellowstone is AMAZING!! I haven’t made it to Craters of the Moon yet... was supposed to go last summer but it was the last one on a trip where I saw Olympic, North Cascades, Mount Rainier, and Crater Lake. I was too tired of driving for 5 days straight. Have you been to Yellowstone before? Here’s a shameless photo of me and Old Faithful at sunrise. Sunrise is the best time to see Old Faithful if you can pull yourself out of bed.

No I haven't been! It's on my bucket list.  We've been to craters of the moon but in the middle of the night, it was too take pictures of the milky way.  I'd love to go in the day!

ETA that's an awesome picture! I can't wait to go,  thanks for the tip!
  • If you have questions or want recommendations on Yellowstone, let me know! I was just there last summer. It’s such a unique place! The wannabe geologist in me was geeking out at all the geothermal features.

I think we’ll need to add photos to this thread after folks have gone on their trips. Whether “official” babymoon or just a kid-free night out at Whataburger.
  • @featherchicki great idea and yes I'll take all the ideas! H has been there before but it was a while ago.  I'd love suggestions!
  • @galactickates My husband just reminded me you may want to ask your doc about the sulphuric fumes at Yellowstone while being pregnant. From a quick google search, it sounds like the fumes at Yellowstone aren’t as bad as the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park which recommends pregnant women avoid visiting (and of course now no one’s visiting Hawaii Volcanoes NP!) Aside from the rotten egg smell, you should have a great time!

For recommendations, I’ll send you a direct message, since it may be kinda long-ish.
  • I think we may be going to Hawaii in September for a baby moon. We are on the west coast so its not too bad with a direct flight. We are thinking probably Kauai and Oahu. Would love any recommendations!
  • We did a baby moon with DD1 to San Diego and then had a solo trip to San Diego planned when I was pregnant with DD2. So that was kind of a baby moon I guess. Not necessarily planning a baby moon this time, but I think we’re doing a solo trip to Virginia in September for a football game, so unplanned baby moon?
  • I think we may be going to Atlanta kid free in September for a NFL game. We had plans to go with friends before we knew I was pregnant. DH doesn't think I will have a good time hanging out with a bunch of drunk people for a weekend but I think I can still have a good time.

  • @drabong88 our beloved Packers are coming to town this year and we planned on going before we got pregnant. Now I just plan on eating all of the yummy food and making fun of the drunk people!

We spent a week on Maui in January. It was amazing!
