@nlc8424 Yes, that’s annoying that your coworkers are coming up short.
@MandyMost I feel the same about people telling me they’re tired. It’s why I try not to complain about lack of sleep. Because I know there are people with a lot less.
I’m salaried and I’m also a work-a-holic when there is a lot of work to do. I work 12 hour days with no lunch break sometimes. I have also no problem working a 6 hour day when I feel unfocused or crappy. Because - if I’m not being productive or making mistakes, it feels like a waste to be at work. My schedule definitely leans towards the more than 40 hours side of things. But, the people I work with are all hourly. I’m the supervisor. I try to be super cool with them. They have to account for 40 hours (not productivity - I’m talking about their time card) but if they are late or need a long lunch, I never give them a hard time. They can make up the time or take sick time. I don’t care as long as it equals 40. But, I do HATE it when they don’t get their work done. It’s almost always the person who took the long lunch who is then asking me to approve overtime or help them prioritize. I don’t get overtime and am judged on getting work done (regardless of the time it takes). So I totally have no tolerance for people not getting their work done. It’s Unexceptable. If you can’t tell, I have 5 awesome employees and 1 super difficult one. I can’t do anything about him. He has been there so long. I just am learning how to be a really good manager by dealing with this very difficult employee. Or, at least that is what I tell myself!
@magnolia209 Can you have your employees clock out at lunch and then add the allowance back on at the tail end so there is no overtime unless more than 40 hours per week are actually worked?
@BostonBaby1 Yes - he actually screws himself out of overtime regularly by not working the full 40 hours and then working overtime, but only getting regular pay. He does not seem to care about making money - he mostly cares about passing the buck which is why he drives me bonkers. We get along though, because I put a lot of effort into being good and fair to them. He seems to respect this and is much more cooperative with me than with our former supervisor. Anyway, he just sucks! Luckily, my boss is awesome and she is very supportive of me so I can handle this jerky employee!
Back to the original point of this work discussion, I see both sides. I don’t like people who take advantage of the system. But I also see nothing wrong with working more or less as appropriate if you are not hourly - as long as you get your work done and don’t screw your co-workers over.
FFSC: I was outside with H and DS this afternoon cleaning off our patio table and H was mowing. Apparently I got too big of a whiff of grass and starting coughing really hard, which led to me letting out some pee. Ugh, pregnancy is so glamorous.
FFSC: We had my son's second birthday party here Saturday. My mom has been in town for 3 weeks helping with things. I totally let her do a shit ton of the prep cleaning and last minute hanging of shelves (finally got our house "done" from moving in last fall!), and even though I feel like I should be ashamed, I just don't. I still did plenty, but she tackled the tough scrubbing jobs.

I am in the same boat as @mandymost and sometimes don't work the full salaried time in a week, but that is in the office. It doesn't include outside time. But I do travel a ton, and those days are loooonng.. If I've spent 14 hours traveling the day before, I am counting that towards my hours for sure. I also run the department, so I take calls at random hours, get frantic phone calls on the weekends where I have to go in and help, and get to answer for things that my employees haven't completed. I had an employee make a snide remark about my hours one time, so I asked if they'd like to work my exact schedule the following week. They agreed, so I sent out all of my calendar invites, which included 4 700am calls which were outside office hours, and an audit on the weekend. They apologized. But I do understand what you're saying @nlc8424 If your job calls for 40 hours, and you have to account for time, then just do it.
