Infertility

Dealing with PCOS.

Hi. I hope you guys are doing well. I want to narrate my friend's story. I hope I can get some help for her. I am really worried because of her. She conceived five years back but her pregnancy resulted into a miscarriage. After that, she has been TTC. All in vain. She was diagnosed with PCOS. She is quite depressed now. She is all shattered at the moment. I can't see her in distress. I have heard that IVF goes well with people having PCOS. At the same time I have heard that it takes a few cycles before it get successful. I need to know what are the success rates? Should I tell my friend to give it a try? I really want to take her out of the pain. Looking for to your opinions. Lots of love.

Re: Dealing with PCOS.

  • I have PCOS and have had success. My first round of ivf resulted in twin boys. Second transfer resulted in a miscarriage because of genetic issues. The problem with pcos is usually egg quality. That is absolutely the truth in my case specifically. I have done 3 egg retrievals
    #1- 25 eggs, 20 mature, 19 fertilized, and only 4 survived to day 5/6.
    #2- 13 eggs, 10 mature, 10 fertilized, 1 made it to day 5/6
#3- 6 eggs, all mature and fertilized and none survived.
If I had miraculously gotten pregnant on my own it probably would have resulted in a miscarriage because I have such low egg quality. This is not the case for anyone with PCOS but might be what your friend is going through.

I would suggest her talking to her Dr about things she can do to attempt to improve egg quality and go from there. There are several things (taking metformin, CoQ10, changing diet, ect). I wouldn't know what the best thing for her to start with hense the talking with Dr suggestion. I hope things work out for her.

  • @mandurz, Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I am glad to hear it worked for you.I have read it on the internet about the egg quality. I am definitely going to share this with her. I would recommend her to see her doctor about this. I hope things go smoothly now. Keep her high in your prayer list.
  • Hey Windy. How are you? I hope you and your friend are doing well. I'm sorry to hear about her condition. PCOS is terrible. IVF though is very reliable. Especially for PCOS. It is perfect for people suffering from PCOS. I'd suggest her to go for it, right-away. It would be the best decision that she makes. You should convince her. You both should do the background check on it and go for it, without wasting time. Good luck. I hope it works out! Lots of love and baby dust your way.
  • @lilyjames1 I hope everything is good at your end. Thank you so much for your kind words. We are now deciding to see a fertility specialist. We have an appointment with her tomorrow. Fingers crossed. I have read it on the internet that the quality of egg really matters in this case. I am hoping that she has a fine one. We will definitely discuss the IVF with her. We want to see what she really has to say on this. I really want her to succeed in her first attempt. I hope things go smoothly for her. I am really worried to see her cry each day. It really breaks my heart. Keep her high in your prayer list. God bless. :))

  • Hi @windy88 ! Hope you and your friend are doing well. I also have PCOS and it is definitely trying. I have had my highs and had my lows for sure. It is so hard to be diagnosed and having to put some extra steps in to do something our bodies should naturally do. I believe once she is able to see a fertility specialist, her hopes will go up! They might suggest doing IUI's first? (it also depends on the insurance coverage and on what they allow--I have to do 3 IUI's before moving on to IVF) But it definitely depends on the person on what they suggest. I have heard great things about IVF and am definitely going to move forward with it if my next couple IUI cycles fail. Keep us updated and the best of luck to her!  <3
