How Does Your Garden Grow?

Re: How Does Your Garden Grow?

  • I guess I'm a perv because I didn't think this was literally about gardening by the title. LOL

  • I had my first raspberries and peas from the garden this morning. Zucchini and cucumbers are coming in. And most of my tomatoes have little fruit on them - yey! Everything is a little late this year, so I am pruning aggressively to make sure what's there actually gets a chance to ripen before the frost hits..

  • We have so many cucumbers. We’ve probably already eaten 20. There are a lot of watermelons and cantaloupes. We’ve never tried those before, so I hope they are successful! Our blueberries didn’t do that great- maybe only 20 berries??? But the bush is pretty. Tomatoes were ok. Didn’t produce a ton, but what has grown have been good. Our lemons won’t be ready for months, but they are getting big. Our rosemary smells great. And all the different types of mint smell great.
  • @ab_canada @Activebaby
How long have you been growing berries (sorry I’m sure this is here somewhere)? Any takeaways or tips, things you’ll do differently next year? I’ve been wanting to put in blueberries and raspberries for the longest!

And @Activebaby, how do y’all eat all those cukes?! Any special recipes?
  • @hoosiermama-2 I know nothing about berries. I bought it (just 1 bush) from a good place. It’s potted. I wanted to plant but I’m not sure where and I’m afraid the birds would eat all the berries so I have it with the other netted fruit/veggies (strawberries and tomatoes- both potted). I need to learn next year what to do. I’ll probablu bring it in the sunroom on days it gets below freezing (not too long in GA).
i love eating cucumbers with just salt. Ds2 does too, so we will eat 1 at dinner. I haven’t even thought to make other things with them because I eat them so quickly. Those are the vegetable that have been a good deal for us. Others the plants costs more than our yield lol.
Also our strawberries are done having fruit but they keep growing and look super healthy. What do we do with them???
  • think you let some of the runners go (and maybe snip them from the mother plant once they're rooted and established) to give you more plants next year and pinch off some of the others. This is what I did with my strawberry patch at our old house.
I started a patch this spring but I pinched off all the flowers hoping it'll pay off next year. I haven't been detached the runners from the mother plants though, I should read more about that because it's been so long.
  • We got some flowers on our new tomato plants! Hoping that means we'll get at least a few tomatoes before the weather gets cold! (Since we're in LA, it should stay warm through at least September, sometimes all the way through Oct and part of Nov!)

In bad news, a bunch of leaves on our mini rose plant turned yellow. :( I stripped them off and hope it'll be ok otherwise? Not sure what the issue is.
  • Thanks @hoosiermama-2! The runner parts are all over. My strawberries last year died after they had a few berries, so this is very different for us.
  • @hoosiermama-2
Raspberries are actually very easy. We only planted them last year (from little suckers from my in-laws) and they are growing very well. They like sunshine and water. The only thing I would suggest is to contain the roots somehow. Otherwise they will keep spreading and it can get tiring to keep taking the suckers out. One suggestion is to actually bury a big plastic container (like a blue tote) and plant the berries there.
I am also growing blackcurrant - that's doing very well too. Also likes sunshine and grows into a big full bush.
