Spitting has suddenly become a fun game - how to stop?

My 16 month old son has suddenly decided to that spitting saliva is funny. So now he's spitting into shoes, into toy train smoke stacks, into cubbies, onto chairs - random things (but preferably things that have holes) and laughing his head off.

We (adults) don't spit.

How do we stop this behavior?
