To Do List

I believe this was mentioned a week or so ago and it seemed like there was some interest in this thread. I've noticed this on other BMBs as well, and seeing others' lists has been helpful as I get started making my list.

What's on your list to do before baby arrives?

  • Oh man, I feel like my list is so long. And broken up into reality and dream world (my business makes way more than expected this summer).

    Reality:
    1) Set up crib
    2) Remove remaining man cave/guest room items from nursery
    3) Baby proof and organize attached bath
    4) Order rug to cover up stained carpet
    5) Hang wall decor in nursery
    6) Prep for September (food prep, padsicles, discuss game plans with H for various baby scenarios)
    7) Order and install carseat base in H's car
    8) Hoping to do one last deep clean over the summer before LO arrives
    9) Start thinking about hospital/birthing center bag

    Dream World:
    1) Replace carpet
    2) Hire cleaning service
    3) Still order new rug because new floors would be LVP

    I'm probably forgetting some..
  • I don't have one yet so this is as good a place as any to start one.
    1. Buy double stroller (Already picked one, just waiting for my Amazon completion discount to order)
    2. Buy video monitor that does 2 rooms (Also already picked one, just waiting for my Amazon completion discount to order)
    3. MH to renovate DS's new room (scrape popcorn ceiling, paint ceiling, install and paint baseboard and crown moulding, paint walls, replace carpet with hardwood floors)
    4. Set up DS's new room (area rug, decorations, crib, dresser, toy/book shelf)
    5. Replace DS's name on wall in current nursery with DS2's name once decided and after DS1 has moved to his new room
    6. Wash and hang/store in dresser DS's old clothes for DS2 to use
    7. Get prescription for breast pump from OB and order through insurance company (can be done once I reach 28 weeks)
    8. Pick a name
    Closer to delivery:
    1. Buy postpartum supplies
    2. Submit leave paperwork
    3. Install infant seat bases in my car and MH's truck
    4. Pack hospital bag
    5. Pack bag for DS (I imagine he'll be staying overnight at a grandparents house at least one night when we're in the hospital)

I'm starting to get overwhelmed by everything we have yet to do:

    1. buy furniture
    2. finish registry - this is almost done!
    3. set up nursery
    4. wash hand-me-down (and new) clothing
    5. register for CD service
    6. clean up basement and garage
    7. wash windows and otherwise clean house
    8. finish knitting baby things
    9. paint a couple more pictures for nursery wall art
    10. make freezer meals - probably early August
    11. buy a dresser to move my clothes from the nursery closet to our bedroom

.... probably more things that I'm forgetting right now. :worried:

  • Aquire a trusted used car seat, ideally...  And get playpen that goes with the playpen bassinet back from my in-laws.  Everything else can happen after baby arrives but probably should happen before.

I’m all for everyone doing whatever THEY feel needs to get done before baby arrives, but for any FTMs out there...you have plenty of time for baby proofing after baby is born! You don’t need any baby proofing until they’re mobile. :-)
Yeah I already decided we're not baby proofing for a few months.

These lists are giving me even more anxiety! LOL

  • @mandymost Very true. My entire house is already pretty baby proof thanks to the dogs. Even our lower cabinets already have locks because one of the pups would get into them looking for treats. For me, baby proofing the one bathroom will be a simple step and help me feel like I won't need to worry. Especially since once they're moving, they move fast!

Glad we have this thread. Definitely forgot about calling insurance for the pump and washing the new bottles.
  • @smsaulino The baby gate can definitely wait if you don’t get to it. Actually, I recommend waiting so if you buy one you hate you can return it. Baby won’t be mobile for some time. Unless it’s for the dog  :p

    My to-do:

    1. Get cosleeper back from my friend and set it up in our room.
    2. Get out RNP
    3. Install car seat bases
    4. Pack hospital bag
    5. Pack DS’s bag for overnights with grandparents
    6. Make freezer meals
    7. Get out bottles and sanitize them and pump parts
    8. Get out gender neutral little baby clothes from DS and wash them, wash boppy/Brest Friend covers, wash swaddles.
    9. Put FMLA/STD request in for work for my leave
    10. Pack in as much solo fun time with DS while I can
    11. Work out general idea for nursery (we will order furniture and finish it while I’m on leave once we know if it is boy vs girl)
    12. Put Amazon order in for odds and ends we need
    13. Stock up on household supplies
    14. Clean out chest freezer
    15. Order Solly wrap

    What I’ve done this far:

    1. Bought size N and 1 diapers
    2. Bought DS an umbrella stroller

    Thats about it  :#
  • @Wishilivedinflorida yeah... It's for the "other baby, " the dog. We can't keep Polly's door shut all the time, so we are purchasing the gate for the dog. We are going to try to keep Max from licking Polly until Polly has had her first shots.

  • @Wishilivedinflorida Right, buying some newborn diapers would be a good idea too!

@dexnie That is quite the list!
    Daughter #1 - Feb 2012
    Daughter #2 - Oct 2014
    Daughter #3 - Nov 2016
    Baby #4 - Sept 2018
  • 1. Find a contractor to build the additional room and bathroom (in progress)
    2. Buy double stroller (checking them out next week then waiting for prime day/completion discount)
    3. Get pack n play and rock n play from my parent’s house (stalling as I don’t feel like storing it here and they live 8 min away)
    4. Get infant car seat back from my sister (I’ll give her until August so she can buy a convertible on prime day).
    5. Buy new parts for my breast pump
    6. Make freezer meals
    7. Pack hospital bag
    8. Buy depends (I use my aunt’s prime account so I can’t wait until she gets that email. Ha!)
    9. Buy crib or toddler bed depending if DD is ready to switch by the time her new room has been built
    10. Go through DD’s outgrown clothes and pack away any super girly stuff, and wash the gender neutral stuff. Bug my sister to go through my nephew’s 0-3 clothes (most of which were DD’s) and give them back.
    11. Clean up the piles of stuff we have around the house as there is no way I will do it with 2 kids.
    12. Soak up extra cuddles with DD before she isn’t an only child anymore.
    13. Once my OB gives me the go ahead, lots of sex and walking to jumpstart labor. ;)

I am taking off 4 weeks before my EDD (although I will probably deliver early again) so I figured I can do some small stuff now but I will hopefully have time for all the other stuff in early August once I am no longer working. Also I am too lazy to pack an overnight bag for DD so when I go into labor we’ll grab some stuff and my parents both have the keys to our house to get whatever else they need. This happens on a weekly basis anyway (moving clothes/diapers between our houses) so I am not stressed about it.

    edited June 2018

    ·       Finish painting nursery

    ·       Put away baby laundry that was washed this week (we’ve been washing as things arrive)

    ·       Buy crib mattress (crib was delivered today) {{done 6/2}}

    ·       Register for birth classes/infant CPR class {{done 6/2}}

    ·       Schedule hospital tour {{done 6/2}}

    ·       Submit LOA application for work (it’s drafted, just need to submit) {{done 6/2}}

    ·       Sign up for puppy training classes

    ·       Buy thank you cards for the shower

    ·       Make sure the hostesses have everything they need for the shower

    ·       Pick up the new grill (whee!) {{done 6/2}}

    ·       Get the list of baby names dwindled down to top 3 boy & girl names

    ·       Install baby gate on master bedroom door (to keep dogs out)

    ·       Find cool midcentury inspired (or vintage) dresser for nursery

    ·       Prep house for visitors (shower is here on June 10th, out of town guests begin arriving on June 7th)

    ·       Finish breaking down trees in back yard (before the shower). We had 2 trees and a limb come down over the weekend and we need to finish taking care of that

    ·       Either order breast pump through insurance or buy it and submit claim form {{part 1 done, bought manual pump 6/2}}

    ·       Print leave calendar so that my boss & team knows when I will be out of office and returning {{done 6/2}}

    ·       Schedule 1:1 with boss to discuss my needs when I return to work {{done 6/2}}

    ·       Buy Owlet (with HSA!)

    ·       Schedule prenatal massages!

    ·       Finish painting hallway (eventually, whenever)

I’m sure there is so much more, but I’m feeling less anxious now that I’ve put pen to paper! The things on my list are not that daunting. Once we have the shower, and see what we’ve gotten as gifts, I’ll have a better idea of our “to-buy” list. But I looked at the registry and saw that someone bought our car seat (yay!) and the pack’n’play so we’ve got a place for baby to sleep and a way to get baby home. We’ve got a few diaper covers and have been stocking up on inserts. We’ve got a few clothes, some swaddles, a few bottles. I’m reminding myself that baby doesn’t need a lot and most of the things are things we want, and don’t need.

  • Month of June:
    plan and purchase remodel stuff.
    Month of July:
do/have done the construction of remodel.
    Month of August:
start pulling out baby stuff and making lists like everyone else...

Until we actually bite the bullet and do the work there is no point to prepping yet, and we have everything we need fairly easy to access, so it *should* come together easy... that’s what i keep telling myself...

  • To Do List:

    1. Have furniture delivered and assembled (it should be here in a few weeks)

    2. Clean out guest bedroom before furniture arrives.

    3. Paint room before furniture arrives. Guess I should decide on the paint and design of the stripes I want to do.

    4. Get back all the new born as 0-3 clothing from my sister. Her baby is under 3 months right now. Wash it and organize.

    5. Buy new baby monitor, new owlet, diaper stash, diaper genie, sheets, new bottles and plastic bath tub, mattress.... basically a huge buy buy baby run with tons of coupons.

    6. Register at hospital

    7. Think we have to just inform pediatric practice to expect baby girls delivery.

    8. Install DD’s infant car seat for new baby.

    9. Prep all my cases for maternity leave with detailed notes on What covering attorney should do.

    10. Sign up our dog for doggy daycare so he doesn’t drive me crazy when baby is born.

    11. Pack DD overnight bag and hospital bag.

Can we revive this? I found it really helpful earlier in the month. I'm removing the things I've finished and adding new to-dos.

    ·       Finish painting nursery

    ·       Put away baby laundry that was washed already (we’ve been washing as things arrive)

    ·       Sign up for puppy training classes

    ·       Get the list of baby names dwindled down to top 3 boy & girl names

    ·       Install baby gate on master bedroom door (to keep dogs out)

    ·       Find cool midcentury inspired (or vintage) dresser for nursery

    ·       Either order breast pump through insurance or buy it and submit claim form {{part 1 done, bought manual pump 6/2}}

    ·       Buy Owlet (with HSA!) <-- tried to order but my HSA card gets declined for online purchases, going to try calling them.

    ·       Schedule prenatal massages!  <-- I got a gift card for a massage, trying to figure out the BEST time to take advantage <3

    ·       Finish painting hallway (eventually, whenever)

    • Organize the baby room, like set it up. We've got everything we need except the dresser.
    • Buy a new cover for the nursery chair & buy the ottoman that goes with it
    • Send thank you cards from shower (ack)
    • Make hospital bag checklist

I feel like I am forgetting things. Like major things.

  • nackienackie member
@dexnie wow, you’ve got a lot going on!  Looks like you’re making good progress
  • Literally the only thing on my list above that I've done is to buy a new video monitor. I still need the second camera but I knocked the one we had off the shelf and the sound function broke so I jumped on it when the one I wanted was randomly $25 off on Amazon one day.

Oh and MH has made progress on DS1's new room. Ceiling has been scraped, fixed (hornets nested in the attic and chewed through into the bedroom below a couple years ago), and painted. Crown moulding has been installed. This upcoming weekend the unfinished hardwood is going in as is the baseboard. Which means I really need to get started on paint colors, an area rug, and lighting fixture.

  • Haha so I haven't done tons since this thread started. June was busy for us so I'm hoping to get a lot more done in July.

    Reality:
    1) Set up crib
    2) Remove remaining man cave/guest room items from nursery
    3) Baby proof and organize attached bath
    4) Order rug to cover up stained carpet
    5) Hang wall decor in nursery
    6) Prep for September (food prep, padsicles, discuss game plans with H for various baby scenarios)
    7) Order and install carseat base in H's car
    8) Hoping to do one last deep clean over the summer before LO arrives
    9) Start thinking about hospital/birthing center bag
    10) Pre-register for hospital. Just found out we need to do this just in case, even though the plan is birthing center.
    11) Create a visual birth plan. Midwives suggested this in case of a hospital transfer since the doctors/nurses won't want to or have time to read over a detailed birth plan.

    Dream World:
    1) Replace carpet
    2) Hire cleaning service  We hired a cleaning service!! They'll be doing a deep clean the week before my baby shower and hopefully we'll keep them on once a month for cleaning maintenance.
    3) Still order new rug because new floors would be LVP
  • nackienackie member
@dexnie on the bright side, it’ll probably be easier than trying to make a move like that with an infant. You’ve got this!
  • dexniedexnie member
@nackie that was our reasoning, so thank you for the reminder :)
  • 1. Clear out the spare bedroom so it can be the nursery
    2. Buy a crib and dresser
    3. Get a breast pump
    4. Wash DD's old baby clothes for new babe
    5. Buy a double stroller (looking at a used City Select double tomorrow)
    6. Pick a name
    7. Pack hospital bag
    8. Make some freezer meals
    9. Pull out the bottles to sterilize them and buy new nipples
    10. Buy a second monitor camera
    11. Buy new pacifiers
    12. Get a pack of newborn and size 1 dipes
    13. Spend all the time I can with DD

Agree on FTM not baby proofing until mobile. We baby proofed at 9 months.
  • Feeling like I need a check-in on this! Completed and added some things :#

    To Do:

-Have chair reupholstered for nursery (going to it myself with a friend's help this weekend!)

-Shop/craft nursery décor and decorate nursery (in progress; planning to DIY a mobile this weekend)

-Set up crib (on MH's to do list)

    -Order new pump from insurance

-Shop for school supplies for DD and enroll her in fall activities

-Figure out a "big sister" gift for DD (thinking about giving her my American Girl doll I've been saving)

-Take DD shopping for gift for baby

    -Pre-register at hospital (34 weeks)

-Prep freezer meals and snacks (mid-August?)

-Confirm daycare spot for baby #2 (we notified our current provider early on; just need to touch base closer to time)

-Buy postpartum supplies/nursing tops and remaining registry items

-Buy and install new video monitor (I really need to research these...)

-Install car seat base (35-36 weeks)

    -Pack hospital bag (35-36 weeks)

-Attend sprinkle + send thank you notes

-Plan for and train my temp at work (temp position is posted!)

    -Deep clean the house

-Pack DD’s overnight bag for my parents’ house

    Wish List:

    -Have living room/stairwell painted

-Get deep freezer from Uncle and set up in garage (I'm on the fence about this now; may just make a few dinners, meal components and snacks to keep in our current freezer)

-Buy van + sell MH's car (before the end of the year)

    Completed:

    -Enroll DD in Kindergarten

-Schedule dentist, eye doctor and hair appointments for me + DD prior to September

    -Clean out current playroom/organize toys

-Clean out current guest room and move treadmill from playroom

-Decorate and transition current playroom to DD’s new room

-Install closet storage system in DD’s new room

-Wash woven wraps and carriers and move to nursery

-Touch base with pediatrician re: care for baby #2

-Create easy weekly meal plans for the first few weeks post-partum

    -Finalize FMLA paperwork at work

-Sign up for Infant CPR class

-Pray baby #2 does not arrive on DD's birthday
