Bleeding after starting Letrozole

Hi Everyone,

My husband and I recently decided to start ttc and of course this month my cycle seem to be off - period never came and I'm about on day 40 (not pregnant, took several pregnancy tests ranging from day 30-40). My cycles have been pretty normal since I had my daughter 2 1/2 years ago expect for recently. I went to see my OBGYN and she had started me on Letrozole to bring on ovulation. However, about 2 days after starting the medication, I started to having bleeding and it pretty much resembles my period expect it seems to be a brighter red and not as much clotting. It does seem like it is slowing down but I was curious if this is typical and if this was actually my period that was induced? After doing some research online, I feel like I should have been prescribed something to induce my period before taking the Letrozole. TIA!

I believe it's pretty standard to wait at least 60 days in a case like yours before inducing a period. I think your OB should have also induced a period before prescribing letrozole. Sometimes cycles are off. Do you have a history of irregular periods? Did you just stop birth control? One irregular cycle doesn't mean much although I know it can be frustrating. If you stopped birth control recently it can take a few cycles for your body to regulate. If you just started TTC I think it's premature and a little irresponsible for your OB to prescribe you an ovulation inducing medication. If you get to the point in TTC you need intervention, I would recommend seeing an RE who will do the recommended testing before throwing meds at you.

  • I would say my cycles are a little longer than the typical 28 days cycle but for the most part regular. This is probably the first month in the last 2 Year’s that my cycle went this long. I think some of it could be due to loosing weight the past few months and increased exercise.  I should mention that I had trouble conceiving my first child (about 2 years). During that time my progesterone was low and I would go a long time with no period and then would bleed for weeks. Eventually once that was straightened out I did several rounds of clomid and eventually an iui that ended up resulting in a pregnancy. Also to note, I haven’t been on any birth control since my daughter was born 2 1/2 Year’s ago so we have not been preventing pregnancy.
