IUI Advice?

Hi! DH and I are 30, TTC for 5 months. Our RE is recommending an IUI this cycle. I’ve had precancerous cervical cells removed before (colposcopy), I have very little if any EWCM, I have a tilted uterus, and it was very difficult for an OB to insert the cervical catheter during my HSG… so I am quite hopeful the IUI May help us get pregnant. I ovulate well on my own so RE wants to do unmediated cycle. I’m supposed to go in CD10 for ultrasound. Can anyone share experiences and advice for IUI? Would be greatly appreciated!

Re: IUI Advice?

  • @moose1100 I’ve had very difficult IUIs due to difficulty inserting the catheter. There were times my doctor couldn’t even get the catheter in for my saline sonos. Some women have more a more difficult cervix or some stenosis that makes it harder to insert a catheter. Can I just ask why you are seeing an RE?

Sure, it's a good question. When I stopped birth control after 10 years, I got regular periods right away, but they were short and light and my luteal phase was only 10-11 days. My OBGYN drew some labs, and my 8 (not 7) dpo progesterone was 5.6 and AMH was 0.9, so she referred me to an RE.  Now, I had my labs rechecked last month (after 6 months off birth control) and my AMH is now normal at 2.1, and my 7dpo progesterone is 11.6.  So technically I don't think I have any "infertility issues" at this time, but if the catheter was tough to insert during my HSG and I know I barely have EWCM, then I'm thinking I should go along with the IUI because that would increase my chances if I am up against those factors.  I would like to get pregnant as soon as possible... The same thought that pretty much everyone on this board has, I know.

  • @moose1100 I also have a completely tilted uterus, and the first couple of procedures with my RE were difficult.  HSG had to be done twice, couldn't get an endometrial biopsy, etc.  However, over time, my RE has learned the shape of my uterus well and now we have no issues whatsoever with procedures.  The IUIs have been a breeze. For most women, they want a full bladder, but for me, he wants an empty bladder - not sure if that might be the case for you but something to think about.  He will often use an abdominal ultrasound at the same time to ensure placement is correct.  Good luck to you.
